    Jan 04, 2007:
First Competition Films Confirmed: Modern History and Great Stars

“We are delighted”, says Festival director Dieter Kosslick, “to be able to present a number of new works by renowned directors and interesting young filmmakers again. Many of the productions selected for this year’s Competition link modern historical processes to personal, intimate and extremely emotional stories.”

One of the first six films selected is the German entry Yella by Christian Petzold. After presenting Gespenster (Ghosts) in 2005, the director, who has won a number of awards, will be showing a film in the Berlinale Competition for the second time. Yella tells of a young woman from the former East German province of Brandenburg who begins a new job in western Germany, so as to escape a wretched marriage. But her old life keeps catching up with her. Nina Hoss, Hinnerk Schönemann and Devid Striesow star in the film. (World Premiere)

To date, the USA will be represented by Robert De Niro’s The Good Shepherd and Steven Soderbergh’s The Good German. In his second work as director after A Bronx Tale, De Niro tells the story of an idealistic Yale graduate during World War II who is recruited by the OSS (the precursor to the CIA). The cast features a number of Oscar-winning actors and actresses, including Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and Robert De Niro. (International Premiere)

In The Good German, George Clooney plays an American journalist who becomes embroiled in a murder conspiracy in postwar Berlin. In this black-and-white film, director Steven Soderbergh has created a homage to the cinema of the 1940s, combining historical archive material with newly filmed scenes. Alongside George Clooney, Soderbergh, whose last contribution to the Berlinale Competition was the science-fiction drama Solaris (2005), has cast Tobey Maguire and Cate Blanchett, among others. (International Premiere)

Europe will also present the Belgian-German-Luxembourg-British-French co-production Irina Palm in the Berlinale Competition. Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull plays a 50-year-old widow who is so desperately in need of money that she unwittingly accepts a job in a sex club. Irina Palm is Belgian director Sam Garbarski’s second film; his debut film The Rashevski Tango received much recognition throughout Europe. (World Premiere)

Following Smilla’s Sense of Snow (1997), two-time Oscar-winner Bille August will present his latest film, Goodbye Bafana, in the Berlinale Competition. The international co-production tells the true story of James Gregory (Joseph Fiennes), the white prison guard whose life is profoundly altered when he meets the prisoner Nelson Mandela, whom he ends up guarding for more than twenty years. Dennis Haysbert plays the ANC activist and later Nobel Peace Prize winner. James Gregory’s wife Gloria is played by Diane Kruger. On February 11, 2007, it will be 17 years since Nelson Mandela was released from prison. (World Premiere)

So far South Korea will be represented in the Competition by I Am A Cyborg But That’s Ok by the celebrated director Park Chan-wook. In a psychiatric hospital, a young woman patient, who thinks she is a cyborg, falls in love. The cast includes Korean superstar Rain, who is also very successful as a pop star, and Lim Soo-jung. Director Park Chan-wook first competed in the Berlinale Competition six years ago, with the political thriller Joint Security Area. (International Premiere)

The selection for the Competition of the 57th Berlin International Film Festival will be completed by mid-January.

    Jan 11, 2007:
57th Berlinale: International Cinema Stars on the Jury

This year, seven international stars and film experts will decide who is to take home the Golden Bear and the Silver Bears. Under Jury President Paul Schrader, Hiam Abbass, Mario Adorf, Gael García Bernal, Willem Dafoe, Nansun Shi and Molly Malene Stensgaard will bring glamour, passion and expertise to Berlin.

American Gigolo is the best-known film directed by Jury President Paul Schrader. Though it was with the screenplay to Taxi Driver that he made film history (1976). By continuing his collaboration with director Martin Scorsese, he also went on to celebrate success with Raging Bull (1980) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). Schrader gave his directorial debut in 1978 with Blue Collar. It was followed, for instance, by Mishima in 1985. His film adaptation of The Comfort of Strangers (1991), a novel by Ian McEwan, with a script by Nobel Prize winner Harold Pinter, was outstanding. Schrader screened his crime drama Light Sleeper in the 1992 Berlinale Competition.

The Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass also writes screenplays and directs films. Abbass, who lives in Paris, has starred in excellent films over the past years. For example, she displayed her versatility in Red Satin (2002) and then again as The Syrian Bride (2004). Most recently she performed in Hany Abu-Assad’s Paradise Now (2005) and Steven Spielberg’s Munich (2005).

With Mario Adorf, this year’s jury includes a connoisseur of German cinema. More than 120 film and television roles have made him one of the most famous actors in Germany. Adorf has starred in films such as Volker Schlöndorff’s The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum and The Tin Drum, in Fassbinder’s Lola and in Helmut Dietl’s Rossini. He has also performed in many international productions – including films by Claude Chabrol, Sergio Corbucci, Sam Peckinpah and Billy Wilder, among others.

Since his screen debut in the Oscar nominated Love’s a Bitch by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Mexican actor Gael García Bernal is not just a celebrated star in his own country. Walter Salles cast him as Che Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries and Pedro Almodóvar in Bad Education. In 2006, Bernal could be seen in the Berlinale Competition film The Science of Sleep and in Iñárritu’s tremendously successful Babel.

Willem Dafoe is one of the most highly esteemed actors from the USA and is seen as a master of intriguing dark characters. After his debut in Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate (1980), he won worldwide acclaim as a soldier in Oliver Stone’s Platoon (1986). He has given brilliant performances in blockbusters like Spider-Man as well as in arthouse productions by David Cronenberg, Lars von Trier or Martin Scorsese. Dafoe is also well-known for his stage performances, in particular for his work with the legendary “Wooster Group”.

With film producer Nansun Shi from Hong Kong, a woman is coming to Berlin who has been described by Variety magazine as one of the 50 most influential indie filmmakers around the world. One of the biggest successes of her 20-year career was the prize-winning Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, on which Scorsese based The Departed. In addition she produced Tsui Hark’s epic martial-arts movie Seven Swords, which opened the Venice Biennale in 2005.

Film editor Molly Malene Stensgaard from Denmark has worked on almost every film made by her fellow countryman Lars von Trier – from the series The Kingdom to The Idiots, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville and Manderlay. In doing so she has left her mark on Danish cinema. In addition, she has worked, for example, with director Anette K. Olesen, whose film In Your Hands screened in the Berlinale Competition three years ago.

Festival director Dieter Kosslick is already certain it will not be an easy job for the members of the International Jury to make their decisions: “I wouldn’t like to be in their shoes. But if anyone can master this difficult task, then these seven.”

    Jan 15, 2007:
New films by Ruzowitzky, Rivette, Téchiné, Nava, Eastwood, Schrader, Costanzo and Menzel nominated for the Berlinale Competition

The selection for the Competition of the 57th Berlin International Film Festival is nearly complete. “We have succeeded”, summarizes festival director Dieter Kosslick, “in getting films by important directors of international cinema to come to Berlin. We are equally delighted by the work of young filmmakers, whose stories and ways of telling them we think is important to present to a big audience.”

In addition to the seven Competition films announced earlier (see press releases from January 4 and 10), another eight films have been selected.

The German-Austrian co-production Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiter) by Stefan Ruzowitzky (Anatomy) narrates the biggest counterfeiting operation ever pulled off. Towards the end of World War II, the National Socialists forged millions of British pounds in order to weaken the enemy’s economy. A counterfeiting plant was set up with prisoners in the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen. Karl Markovics, August Diehl, Devid Striesow and Marie Bäumer play the leading roles in the film. (World premiere)

French directors Jacques Rivette and André Téchiné have also joined the Competition line-up with their latest works. With Ne touchez pas la hache (Don’t Touch the Axe), Jacques Rivette has made another screen adaptation of a Balzac novella. Guillaume Depardieu, Jeanne Balibar and Michell Piccoli co-star in this dramatic love story about a beautiful duchess who wards off the advances of a very passionate military officer. (World premiere)

In Les Témoins (The Witnesses), André Téchiné returns to the early 1980s. Set against a dramatic relationship, he describes the emergence of Aids and how people dealt with the deadly virus. The cast includes Emmanuelle Béart, Michel Blanc, Sami Bouajila and Julie Depardieu. (World premiere)

Based on real events, director Gregory Nava’s US-production Bordertown examines a series of murders of Mexican women workers in the border town of Ciudad Juárez in the early 1990s. Jennifer Lopez (Selena) plays an ambitious US journalist who in searching for the truth puts her own life in danger. Other leading roles are played by Antonio Banderas, Maya Zapata and Martin Sheen. (World premiere)

Another film from the USA – Letters from Iwo Jima – will be running out of competition. After Flags of Our Fathers, Clint Eastwood will present the second movie in his two-part project about the legendary battle on the Japanese Pacific island in February 1945. While Flags of Our Fathers recounts events as experienced by GIs, Letters from Iwo Jima tells the same story from the Japanese point of view. The cast features Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya and Tsuyoshi Ihara. (European premiere)

The Walker (USA/GB), Berlinale Jury President Paul Schrader’s latest film, will also be screened out of competition. Woody Harrelson plays Carter, the escort of elegant but lonely society ladies in Washington D.C. When his best friend (Kristin Scott Thomas) suddenly gets involved in a murder, Carter finds himself implicated in a web of intrigue and crime. Other roles are played by Lauren Bacall, Lily Tomlin, Moritz Bleibtreu and Willem Dafoe. (World premiere)

In the Italian production In Memoria di me (In Memory of Myself) by Saverio Costanzo (Private), the main character is a young man who has decided to renounce worldly life. He enters a Jesuit monastery in Venice but is overcome by agonizing doubts before his ordination. Christo Jivkov plays the novice monk. His co-stars are Stefano Antonucci and André Hennicke, among others. (World premiere)

The Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic will be represented in the Competition by Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále (I Served the King of England). Once more, Czech master director Jirí Menzel (Larks on a String, Golden Bear 1990) has adapted a novel by Bohumil Hrabal to the screen. Two decades of European history are retold from the viewpoint of a waiter from Prague. Alongside German shooting-star Julia Jentsch, winner of the Silver Bear for her role in Sophie Scholl (2005), the cast includes Ivan Barnev and Oldrich Kaiser. (International premiere)

The selection for the Competition of the 57th Berlin International Film Festival will be completed soon. There will be a total of 26 films – including those running out of competition – in the Competition programme.

    The Competition Section is Complete

The selection for the Competition section of the 57th Berlin International Film Festival has been finalised. The programme comprises 26 films, including 19 world premieres, six International premieres and one European premiere. Four films are to be presented out of competition.

Latin America is represented with two films this year: the Brazilian-Argentinean co-production O ano em que meus pais saíram de férias (The Year My Parents Went On Holiday) by Cao Hamburger tells the story of 12 year old Mauro, growing up in Brazil in the seventies when his parents were forced suddenly to “go on a trip” during the military dictatorship. The main characters are played by Michel Joelsas, Germano Haiut and Daniela Piepczyk. The director became known for his successful television series City of Men for which he received a number of awards. (International Premiere)

Ariel Rotter will be presenting his second feature film at the Berlinale after Solo por hoy (2001). This year’s contribution El otro (Argentina/France/Germany) deals with the existential uncertainty of a man who decides to change his identity. The lead is played by Julio Chávez who also appeared last year in the Argentinean Berlinale entry El Custodio. El Otro is one of the World Cinema Fund’s current funding projects. (World Premiere)

The film Beaufort from Israel has also been invited into the Competition. Joseph Cedar (Campfire) describes in his third film the story of the last military unit to be stationed in southern Lebanon prior to the troops being withdrawn from the country. The director portrays the fears and hardships experienced by the soldiers in the legendary Beaufort castle. The cast includes Alon Abutbul and Eli Eltonyo. (World Premiere)

The Berlinale will also be showing Hyazgar (Desert Dream) as a co-production between the Republic of Korea and France, directed by Zhang Lu, who recently attracted international acclaim with his award winning drama Grain in Ear. The film is set in a small, drought threatened village, situated in the border region between China and Mongolia, in which the lives of a farmer, a woman who has fled from North Korea and a soldier cross. The main characters are played by Bat-ulzii and Seo Jung. (World Premiere)

In the Chinese production, Tu ya de hun shi (Tuya’s marriage), director Wang Quan’an (The Story of Er Mei) tells the story of a woman’s efforts to find a new husband who can take care of both her and her sick ex-husband. The title role is played by Yu Nan. (World Premiere)

Ping Guo (Lost in Beijing) has also been invited from China to take part in the Competition section. Against the background of a rapidly changing metropolis, director Li Yu (Fish and Elephant) portrays the longings, fears and values of several residents of Beijing. (World Premiere)

From Canada and the USA comes the independent production When A Man Falls in the Forest. In this drama, director Ryan Eslinger (Madness and Genius) depicts a group of people in a US American provincial village who have to come to terms with their own isolation and loneliness. The film stars Sharon Stone, Timothy Hutton and Dylan Baker. (World Premiere)

300 (USA) by Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) will be shown out of competition. The film, set in virtual locations and based on drawings by the legendary comic artist Frank Miller (Batman, Sin City), describes the battle of Thermopylae in the year 480 B.C. at which the King of Sparta, together with just 300 loyal followers, confronted the might of the Persian army led by King Xerxes. The cast includes Gerard Butler, Lena Headey and Rodrigo Santoro. (World Premiere)

The British film Notes on a Scandal (out of competition) by Richard Eyre (Iris) is a psychological drama about two women whose budding friendship turns sour. This story, based on Zoe Heller’s novel on loneliness, devotion, jealousy and love, sees Oscar-winners Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett in the leading roles. (International Premiere)

The film Hallam Foe by David Mackenzie (Asylum) is also from Great Britain. The young Hallam (Jamie Bell) is unable to cope with the loss of his mother and spends his days in the Scottish Highlands secretly spying on the people around him. Spurred on by the desire to uncover the true cause of his mother’s death and to escape from his father and unwanted step-mother, he flees to the big city. (World Premiere)

As closing film at the 57th Berlinale, François Ozon’s (8 Women) Competition entry Angel will be shown. The French-Belgian-British co-production, filmed entirely in English, is set in England at the beginning of the twentieth century. It portrays the rise and fall of a young woman from humble beginnings, who manages to break into the highest echelons of society as an author.
