Talks reportedly underway to avert Blu-Ray and HD-DVD war
According to numerous sources today, Sony and Toshiba have apparently entered into serious talks in a bid to avoid the format war between Sony/Matsushita's Blu-Ray system and Toshiba/NEC's HD-DVD system that currently looks set to damage the launch of the next-generation DVD.
What's more, fans of one or other of the two rival systems can possibly take heart from the suggestion that the talks aren't aimed at deciding which of the two formats the whole industry should use; rather the preferred outcome of the talks is hinted to be that the two camps will join forces to create a whole new format that incorporates the strengths of both the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats.
Given how much the respective camps currently serve to make from their separate formats we have to say that we're slightly cynical about these talks actually bearing fruit. But with the potential new, universally backed format apparently possibly being announced by as early as next week, we'll be more than happy to be proved wrong. Fingers crossed.
