<blockquote>Quote:<hr>I said to the wife the other day, I said, "Wife...we need to get you to the movies so you can see SPIDER-MAN 2." She said, "Yeah...but when are we gonna see M. Night Shyamalan's new movie!" Yup, the woman I married blew off SPIDER-MAN 2. But considering what she blew it off for, I won't hold it against her. THE VILLAGE was on my list of "must-sees" for this summer (along with SM2, ANCHORMAN and COLLATERAL) so I'm pretty damn excited to see it too. That said, I'm excited to announce a partnership with Disney and Regal Cinemas that will allow you, the JoBlo.com reader, to pose questions to M. Night Shyamalan himself and watch as he answers them live! I knew that'd pique your interest... Here're the details:

REGAL CINEMEDIA AND TOUCHSTONE PICTURES INVITE JOBLO READERS AND MOVIEGOERS TO A LIVE, VIRTUAL "Q & A" WITH ACCLAIMED FILMMAKER M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN

"In The Director's Chair(tm) With M. Night Shyamalan," to be Presented at Select Regal Entertainment Group Theatres Nationwide on July 20th at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT

Moviegoers across the country will have a rare opportunity to spend an evening with the cinema's modern master of suspense - M. Night Shyamalan - as Regal CineMediaSM and Touchstone Pictures present "In the Director's Chair(tm) with M. Night Shyamalan," a special retrospective and live "Q & A" session scheduled for Tuesday, July 20th. Veteran film critic Joel Siegel will lead the Academy Award® nominated director in a discussion of his career and showcase exclusive footage from his upcoming film, THE VILLAGE. The retrospective and live interactive discussion, which starts at 9:00 pm (ET) and 6:00 pm (PT), will transmit from the "Good Morning America" Studio in New York, and be beamed via satellite to 41 Regal movie theatres across the country. Thousands of people across four time zones will have the opportunity to attend and participate in the live forum, and readers of JoBlo will have the special opportunity to ask questions directly to Shyamalan (questions must be submitted no later than this Friday, July 9, in order to be randomly selected and processed, and for the submitting parties to be notified in advance of the event). Tickets for this exclusive in-theatre event are available at select Regal Cinemas, United Artists Theatres and Edwards Theatres nationwide and are also available online at www.regalcm.com. Admission price is $10.

Submit your questions either by e-mailing us at scoops@joblo.com or by visiting the official thread on the JoBlo.com message boards.

<blockquote>Quote:<hr>M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller is a tepid effort when compared to his previous films. It lacks the suspense and creepiness that made The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs such audience hits. I must tread carefully reviewing the film. Touchstone Pictures will kneecap any film critic that reveals spoilers. I’m kidding, no lawsuits please, but they have placed a huge emphasis on keeping the film’s secrets. The truth is that there’s really nothing special to hide. The Village spends ninety-minutes building up to a painfully obvious finale. There wasn’t one moment where I was startled or even mildly surprised. This is pretty disappointing after the genuine scares in Signs. Turn down your expectations, because The Village is more of a drama than anything else.

The setting is an idyllic valley bordered by thick forest in Covington, Pennsylvania. A small village lies in the center of this valley. The people that live in the village are quiet, god-faring people. They raise their crops, spin their clothes, and live in mortal fear of the creatures that inhabit the adjacent woods. There has been a long truce between the villagers and these beings. They stay out of the forest and their village will remain unharmed. The villagers build a perimeter to watch out for the creatures. They offer meat sacrifices to keep them appeased and never, under any circumstances, allow the color red to be seen.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as Lucius Hunt, a quiet and courageous young man. He asks the town elders, led by Edward Walker (William Hurt), permission to leave the village and venture into the woods. The son of the preacher has died and Lucius believes the village needs medicines to prevent further deaths. The town elders refuse his plea, but Lucius boldly walks into the forest anyway. He’s quickly frightened and returns, but ominous signs start to appear in the village. Red marks turn up on doors. Skinned animals litter their fields. The town elders fear that the creatures have been angered and seek vengeance on the village.

From the beginning of the story, there are clues to what’s going on. Mum’s the word, but if you pay attention, the ending is fairly intuitive. The real flaw in the film is that it takes forever to get going. I can buy what happens if Shyamalan had made it more exciting. It’s just not that suspenseful, so the buildup is extremely boring. The characters drone on and on about the creatures. Then when the payoff comes, it’s totally unspectacular. Audiences are not that patient. They might be asleep when the so-called secrets are revealed.

Shyamalan gets a bit arrogant with his approach. He fancies himself as the next Hitchcock and sets out to emulate his style. The problem is that he never maximizes the possibility of his set-up. Hitchcock was a master of using the setting to its full potential. Think of the Bates Motel in Psycho. Shyamalan criminally under uses the actual village. Here you have this little town in the middle of a terrifyingly dark forest. The possibilities are endless. There’s so much that could happen and nothing really does.

Quite a few of my compatriots in the New York critic scene really disliked the film. I disagree with them on its positive merits. It’s not scary and gets tedious, but is well shot and highly dramatic. There a lot of great actors in the film and they convincingly portray the people in the village. I thought the relationships between characters were well written. Every role is genuine. There really is not a bad performance in the film. I just wish they had more frights to deal with.<hr></blockquote>

La review de Fangoria. No la dejan demasiado bien...

<blockquote>Quote:<hr>As usual for an M. Night Shyamalan film, it’s hard to go into too much depth about what does and doesn’t work in THE VILLAGE without venturing into spoiler territory. So without giving any specifics away, or revealing in what order they arrive, it can be said that the writer/director pulls off one genuinely startling development, a reversal that feels rather like a cheat and a plot twist that opens up a large can of plausibility worms. It’s hard to know how hardcore genre fans will accept a couple of these story turns, and, once again, hard to explain why they might not without saying too much.

What can be said is that rather than focus on one protagonist confronting the unknown, here (as the title suggests) Shyamalan dramatizes an entire community’s reaction to the threat of mysterious forces. In this case, the woods surrounding a small town in the 1890s are the dwelling place of a race of beings with whom the villagers have negotiated a kind of truce—they stay out of the forest, and the creatures leave the humans alone. The monsters are referred as “Those We Don’t Speak Of,” yet the townspeople do an awful lot of speaking about them, particularly their leader, schoolteacher Edward Walker (William Hurt). It is he who enforces the rules about staying within the town’s borders, but a few of the younger residents have started to chafe at that restriction, particularly Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix), whose mother Alice (Sigourney Weaver) seems to have an unrequited-love thing going with Walker.

I say “seems” because, like most of the characters and relationships in THE VILLAGE, Walker and Alice’s would-be romance doesn’t get developed much past surface glances. In widening his focus, Shyamalan gives most of his sterling cast short shrift—not just Weaver but also fine supporting players like Brendan (28 DAYS LATER) Gleeson and Cherry Jones. Hurt radiates authority but sometimes sounds ill at ease with the self-consciously “period” dialogue, while Adrien Brody isn’t able to do much with his role as the, ahem, village idiot. The one cast standout—and she really does stand out—is Bryce Dallas “daughter of Ron” Howard as Ivy, Walker’s blind daughter. She brings equal parts sensitivity and strength to Ivy, whose burgeoning romance with Lucius (who, as played by Phoenix, is such a mope that it’s hard to figure out why both Ivy and her sister Kitty, played by Judy Greer, get the hots for him) leads her to share his desire to brave the woods and see what lies beyond.

More will not be said here about the storyline, except to note that the longer it goes on, the less involving it becomes. There are a few subtly creepy moments in the first half, but the movie hardly delivers the frights promised by the ads. More to the point, scaring the audience doesn’t seem to be Shyamalan’s ultimate point; the creatures are a McGuffin through which to examine his favorite theme, the reactions of people to threatening forces and what those responses reveal about human nature. The presence of too many characters thins the drama, however, and their behavior isn’t compelling enough to carry the film.

Narrowing the emphasis to Ivy in the second half promises to pay off in more sustained tension (and the movie might well have benefitted had she been the central protagonist throughout). Yet by the time that happens, Shyamalan has few cards left to play save his final reveal, which comes off more like a gimmick than a logical extension of what has been established. Speaking of gimmicks, Shyamalan even manages to sneak in his own traditional cameo along the way, giving it a directorial emphasis that has nothing to do with the tone of the scene and thus distractingly calls attention to itself.

What becomes clear in THE VILLAGE’s final sections is that here, Shyamalan has let his plot twists define the movie instead of serve them. THE SIXTH SENSE’s revelation worked because it compelled viewers to reconsider everything they had just seen without changing their overall meaning, and the final turns of UNBREAKABLE and SIGNS added deeper subtext to their central characters’ struggles. In all three cases, the movies turned out to be about more than they first appeared; THE VILLAGE is the first film on Shyamalan’s genre résumé that proves to be about less.

    Espero The Village con impaciencia...

¡SHYAMALAN NO ME DECEPCIONES!
