Spielberg is re-teaming with actor Tom Cruise, who starred in Spielberg's successful Minority Report, for the sci-fi disaster movie. That version of The War of the Worlds, being co-produced by Paramount and DreamWorks, is expected to reach theaters in 2005.

It was much to our surprise this week to hear that Hines and Pendragon, not to be outdone by Spielberg, have resumed work on their shelved War of the Worlds project. In fact, they announced in a press release this week that production was secretly carried out in England and the Pacific Northwest over the summer under the cover title "The Great Boer War."

Instead of doing a modern-day version of the Martian invasion tale as previously planned, Hines has shot a period-piece set at the time of the original novel, turn-of-the-century England. Spielberg and Cruise may have little to fear, however, as Hines' film was shot on a very small budget and will probably not enjoy wide release.

The cast of The War of the Worlds is fairly obscure; acting teacher Jack Clay stars alongside Anthony Piana, James Lathrop and John Kaufmann. Hines claims to have pursued negotiations with a few big names like Michael Caine and Charlize Theron, but to no avail.

The Jersey Journal reports that Steven Spielberg and Paramount Pictures are looking to film the H.G. Wells adaptation The War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, in New Jersey. Here are some highlights from the article:

Pre-production work has begun and city lawyers are in the process of negotiating terms for use of various public properties.

Holly Whidden, a publicist for Paramount Pictures in New York, confirmed yesterday that the studio is planning a film of that name with Cruise and that it is "in the early stages of production."

Shooting may start next month and could wrap by December, one city official said. It is slated for a summer release.

As many as nine homes in the area may be involved in the upcoming shooting, Sanchez said.

Several city officials said they were told by studio representatives that Spielberg and company want to build a structure - probably a gas station or auto body shop - on the Little League field on the south side of First Street near Kennedy Boulevard and then blow it up.

No sé si se ha dicho, ya que paso de leerme las noticias que colgais en ingles (mi nivel es lamentable), pero en la Fotogramas del mes pasado comentan que se trata de la peli mas cara que se ha rodado nunca.

No sabia que Spielberg necesitase desfasarse tanto con el presupuesto para hacer buena spelis.

THR says "Chatwin beat out several young actors for the part, which casts him as the son of Tom Cruise's character. Their strained relationship is a significant plot point in the film, sources said of the closely guarded script." The trade adds that Chatwin "was singled out by Newsweek magazine as an 'Actor to Watch' for his role in USA's Traffic miniseries."

Era de prever, porque esa época esa muy poco "época". Distinto habría sido en el siglo XIX. Además, ahora se pueden integrar elementos tecnológicos relevantes.

The Star-Ledger says it's been confirmed that director Steven Spielberg will film parts of Tom Cruise-starrer The War of the Worlds in New Jersey. Here's several clips with the locations:

What is known so far: Both Ferry Street in Newark and Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne will see filming take place there, likely in November.

"In Newark, they've been in the Ironbound section, at the area called Five Corners on Ferry Street," Friedman says. 'They've been in there talking to all the store keepers, and they've got quite a lot of money in their budget to compensate them for shutting down during filming. They've even opened up a temporary production office in the Ironbound."

And in Bayonne, the production has secured permission to build a gasoline station on a Little League ball field off Kennedy Boulevard -- and then blow it up.

There is also a private home in Howell that the production has selected as a film location.

The Jersey Journal reports that Steven Spielberg will shoot The War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise, in downtown Bayonne, New Jersey next week in the shadows of the Bayonne Bridge.

Paramount Pictures is offering quick cash to folks who live on First Street and Pointview Terrace to move their cars off the block between Tuesday and Friday to make way for film crews who will be starting to shoot scenes for next summer's projected blockbuster flick "War of the Worlds."
