After more than a year of touting Blu-ray as the best technology to replace DVD for storing high-definition video and winning proponents including Apple, a top executive at Sony Corp., one of Blu-ray's major backers, has opened the door to the possibility of unifying the format with its arch rival, HD-DVD.

"Listening to the voice of the consumers, having two rival formats is disappointing and we haven't totally given up on the possibility of integration or compromise," Ryoji Chubachi, Sony's president-elect, said at a news conference Thursday in which he discussed the company's performance and future strategy.

The statement may surprise backers of the rival camps, who have assembled consortiums of major electronics companies, disc makers and Hollywood studios to promote the formats in a battle that echoes one fought a quarter of a century ago between Betamax and VHS.

HD-DVD backers, which include NEC Corp. and Toshiba Corp., say HD-DVDs can be produced for about the same price as DVDs and are backward-compatible with DVDs and CDs, making the format more convenient for both consumers and the industry. HD-DVD movie titles, PC drives and players are all due out by the end of the year.

Sony has steadfastly promoted Blu-ray as a technology that has greater capacity, saying this makes the format more useful because more content can be stored on a disc. The technology also has wider support in the technology industry, although release dates for movie titles have not yet been announced.

Chubachi's comments mark the second time that a Sony executive has signalled the possibility of a compromise between the two camps. In January, Ken Kutaragi, executive deputy president of Sony, said a format war was not in the public interest and that Sony had not ruled out the possibility of uniting the formats.

As Sony's future president, Chubachi's remarks Tuesday may carry more weight. Currently head of Sony's electronic components and manufacturing businesses, he will replace Kunitake Ando as Sony president on June 22 following the recent shake-up of Sony's top management. That shake-up saw Kutaragi step down from Sony's board, although he still heads its important gaming business.

Kutaragi also admitted in January that Sony, by supporting its proprietary audio encoding system and not the widely-supported MP3 format, had lost ground to competitors such as Apple Computer Inc. in the portable music player market, which Sony had once dominated with the Walkman.

While Sony's technological and engineering base is sound, the company must ensure that its products are aligned with the wants of consumers, Chubachi said on Tuesday. Sony's engineers have traditionally been regarded within the company as heroes and the creators of new markets, but recently their ideas have not always led to products that matched consumers' needs, he said.<hr></blockquote>

Por lo visto depués de más de un año defendiendo Blu-Ray (tecnolgía óptica similar a la del DVD pero con uso de rayo laser azul) como el mejor sistema de almacenamiento de vídeo de alta definición, Sony se descuelga con que tras escuchar la "voz de los consumidores" han llegado a la conclusión que estos no estan muy por la labor del mantenimiento de dos formatos.

Así que, a pesar de tener a empresas como Apple respaldando su propuesta, han abierto una puerta a la posibilidad de unificar formatos con su rival HD-DVD (NEC, Toshiba, etc).

Por lo visto HD-DVD es compatible hacia atras con DVD's y CD's y ya se preveen lanzamientos cinematográficos en este formato y componentes para PC para el año que viene.

Sin embargo, como tecnología, Blu-ray ofrece una mayor capacidad y tiene un mayor soporte a nivel de la industria.

De todas formas se ve que lo ocurre aquí más tiene que ver con una disputa interna de altos directivos de Sony, con la entrada de Chuchabi como futuro presidente y la caída en desgracia de Kutaragi tras su aceptación de que el empecinamiento de Sony por mantener un formato propio de codificación de audio frente al mp3 la ha hecho perder mucho mercado.

O sea, que han dicho que ni si, ni no, sino todo lo contrario.

Y la pregunta del millon

¿Para que quieren sacar otros formatos con mas capacidad, si el actual, el DVD no lo aprovechan al maximo?

¿Estos se creen que somos tonto o que?

Cuantas pelis tienen una calidad penosa de imagen porque las ponen en DVD5 en vez de DVD9, o ponen 2.0 cuando existen 5.1.

pues si no habia suficiente lio entre HD-DVD y Blu Ray, ahora sale otro formato, el HVD:

Me parece una soberana estupidez lo de que saquen de golpe tantos formatos nuevos. Al fin y al cabo, esto no es como las consolas de videojuegos, que te compras unas para poder acceder a títulos que no están en otras plataformas. El tema de las pelis es simple y ya se ha demostrado. O hay un sólo formato o mucha gente va a perder dinero. O se ponen de acuerdo, o dado que el actual formato ya da una cierta calidad, va a pasar lo mismo que con la sustitución del CD por el Dvd-audio y el SuperCD, que no va a terminarse de dar nunca, y solo unos pocos lo compraran por unos pocos titulos que saldran que aprobechen el formato.

Estas discusiones entre formatos se dan desde tiempos de maricastaña.

Por lógica del mercado, o sale un formato realmente revolucionario Y asequible(cosa que no creo, porque el dvd, como aquel que dice, tiene 3 días de vida), o todo lo que saquen debería ser compatible con lo existente para poder sobrevivir.

Yo siempre lo digo, lo mejor que pueden hacer es la evolución de lo que hay, como la Play Station 2 y la Play Station 1.
