Bruckheimer on "Pirates" Sequel

Jerry Bruckheimer talked a little bit about the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels whilst doing press promotions for "National Treasure" and revealed to LatinoReview some surprising information that shoots down some facts many considered locked in.

Most notably of these is that Keith Richards is not in fact signed to play Jack Sparrow's father - "We don't have him yet". Bruckheimer confirms he has a subtitle for the second entry, but he wouldn't reveal it though he confirmed it is NOT "Treasures of the Lost Abyss" as previously mentioned.

The plan is still to make Pirates 2 and 3 simultaneously if possible - "We'd like to. If Disney will write a check, we'll do it...We hope that we can do it as well as Lord of the Rings did it. That's what you shoot for. You only learn through making mistakes, so we'll watch what Back to the Future did and Matrix did and hopefully not repeat what they did".

Production is expected to begin in March.

Hong Kong's Chow Yun-fat is set to star in the upcoming sequels of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, says Chinese-language newspaper Apple Daily. Chow's wife, Jasmin Chan Wui-nin, said the actor will play the famous 19th century Chinese pirate Cheung Po Tsai for the second and third installments of the film. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley are expected to return in their roles.

Chan said both the movie's producer and director contacted Chow's management company in the U.S. two months ago and director Gore Verbinski flew to Hong Kong last week to discuss the screenplay with Chow. "The director was very sincere about it and specially flew to Hong Kong and discuss the script with Fat Gor (Chow's nickname) ... but we cannot talk about the details until we sign the contract," Chan was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, 'Robert' pointed us to a few new updates. While the report above says two follow-up films are in development, Disney has not confirmed that yet. There might only be one sequel in the works right now. A casting call posted here does give more proof that there might be two films, given the shoot is listed as taking place from February all the way through December of 2005.

While we await announcements on the sequel, or sequels, Geoffrey Rush's rep confirmed to The Australian that his character, Barbossa, looks to be back in some compacity. An article at VFXWorld also mentions that ILM is developing the special effects for the sequels.

Location wise, The Age reports that St. Vincent is one of the shooting locations, and says Mackenzie Crook is aboard the cast.

It all started, he says, with Finding Neverland, which was made two years ago. Its director, Marc Foster, cast Crook in a minor role after watching an episode of The Office during a trans-Atlantic flight. This led to Johnny Depp recommending him for the role of Ragetti in Pirates of the Caribbean, a film so successful that, in early 2005, Crook will decamp to St Vincent to film not one, but two sequels. Former Monty Python actor-turned-film maker Terry Gilliam requested the actor's services in The Brothers Grimm, alongside Matt Damon.

Thailand is also a possible location, according to this list, while the U.S. Virgin Islands and Bahamas may be part of the shoot <hr></blockquote><hr></blockquote>[/quote]

According to the scooper "…They said that the subtitle for the second film would NOT be 'Treasure of the Lost Abyss', as widely reported, but will insted be 'Dead Man's Chest'." They further mentioned that Keith Richards will not be in the second film. I don't know, I think I preferred "Treasure of the Lost Abyss". It sounds more piratesofthecaribbeany. We'll see in the next few months if this is confirmed by the studio.<hr></blockquote>

Looks like Chow Yun-Fat's a lock for the forthcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels.

According to Monkey Peaches, Yun-Fat, who would play pirate Zhang Baozai (Cheung Po-Tasi) in the films, has been spotted around Hong Kong with a beard and slightly more muscular frame.

El actor Stellan Skarsgård (Ronin, Amistad, El Exorcista: El principio) interpretará al padre del personaje de Orlando Bloom en las secuelas de Piratas del Caribe que empezarán a rodarse éste mismo año.

Según el diario sueco Aftonbladet, Skarsgård empezará a trabajar en el pryecto en febrero y acabará en diciembre.

Jerry Bruckheimer is apparently enlisting Jack Davenport ["The Wedding Date", "The Talented Mr Ripley"] for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels.

Davenport will reprise his role as haughty Commodore Norrington, who, in the first film, fancied himself Elizabeth's [Kiera Knightley] fiance.

Davenport's required on set in March.

Plans to portray Dominica's Native Carib Indians as cannibals in the sequel to "Pirates of the Caribbean" have been criticised by the group's chief reports The BBC.

Chief Charles Williams said talks with Disney's producers revealed there was "a strong element of cannibalism in the script which cannot be removed". The Caribbean island's government said Disney planned to film in Dominica. Shooting on the sequel is expected to begin in April, with hundreds of Dominicans applying to be extras in the movie. About 3,000 Caribs live on the island of Dominica, which has a population of 70,000.

The Caribs have long denied their ancestors practised cannibalism. Mr Williams said he had received support from indigenous groups around the world in his efforts to have cannibalism references removed from the film. But he admitted there were some members of the Carib council who did not support the campaign. Disney was unavailable for comment.
