INTERVIEW: We were a little dismayed that you were at the new house, because you are Mr. Nice Guy, and we don't have any dish on you, so we wanted to snoop around your place, check out what's on the walls and your record collection.

SPIELBERG: I'll tell you what's in my record collection. Topping the list of records, I have about 760—it changes every week—soundtrack recordings.

INTERVIEW: Stock soundtracks?

SPIELBERG: Three quarters of the records are stock, and the rest are collectors items.

INTERVIEW: Do your soundtracks go back into the '20s or what?

SPIELBERG: You can't go back into the '20s. They didn't begin putting them out until...

INTERVIEW: I mean the talkies.

SPIELBERG: But those are bad reproductions. All the albums I'm interested in getting are the albums that begin in about 1950 when soundtracks became popular.

INTERVIEW: They're so popular now.

SPIELBERG: And they're so rare. I mean certain records—like The Horse Soldiers. I just got a copy of The Horse Soldiers which is a very rare piece of acetate.

INTERVIEW: Are you a John Ford fan?

SPIELBERG: Ah, yes. A major John Ford fan. The score that I want more than anything else—I will trade an original Touch of Evil, one Horse Soldiers, one King of Kings and any early Tiomkin for The Searchers. But I don't think The Searchers was even an album. I think The Searchers is sheet music somewhere in the Warner Bros. Library and you're gonna have to get Elmer Bernstein's Record club or Charles Gerhardt with the London Symphony Orchestra to record this.

INTERVIEW: I should have gotten To Kill a Mockingbird. That's the most beautiful.

SPIELBERG: Oh, I have that! I just got that today, because my secretary knows Elmer Bernstein, and she just came over this morning with a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird. Pretty, isn't it? You know another very pretty thing is Jenny Goldsmith's A Patch of Blue. Max Steiner was probably the best composer for film ever to have lived. The one classical composer who was born to score movies and never did [Bela] Bartok.

INTERVIEW: Well, they weren't around.

SPIELBERG: He was around. Bartok's Symphony for String, Percussion and Cellist was commissioned in 1936. See, [Erich Wolfgang] Korngold could also have become a Bartok or a [Jean] Sibelius, but he went to movies, and he brought a lot of classical music to film. Just like [Sergei] Prokofiev, who scored a number of Russian movies. [Sergei] Eisenstein used Prokofiev.

INTERVIEW: Do you really work closely with your composer?

SPIELBERG: Very closely... I have a great relationship with John Williams.

INTERVIEW: I really liked the Jaws music, sort that "Down to the Sea in Ships" type of thing.

SPIELBERG: Well, John and I sat together and listened to a lot of Vaughn Williams and [Igor] Stravinsky, and then he went off and composed on the piano. Before he orchestrates he asks me to come over. I sit with him, and he plays the entire score on the piano, and I'm able to make comments, changes or whatever right there, which is really a luxury. John called me over to his house very excited. He sat at the piano and said, "Here's the theme from Jaws." He began playing this very primordial, repetition on the lower notes. I thought he was fooling around. I mean "da da Dah da Dah da." I began to laugh, and John said, "Oh, no, this is serious. I mean it. This is Jaws." And I listened to it again and it grew on me. It wasn't something that exploded as a correct choice. At first I thought it was too primitive. I wanted something a little more melodic for the shark, and then Johnny said, "What you don't hear is the L-Shaped Room... You have made yourself a popcorn movie." And he was absolutely right.

¿Soy al único de por aquí al que le gusta Beltrami cuando está atinado?

Lleva dos décadas ya en rodaje y efervesvencia y los aficionados siguen agarrándose más o menos a los mismos títulos de siempre como favoritos: los de del Toro y 3.10 to Yuma.

Es uno de esos compositores por los que atravieso un despiste notable (como con Armstrong u Ottman), no por falta de calidad o desinterés, sino porque no es posible llegar a abarcar la gran cantidad de títulos que salen año tras año, y más con todo lo que aún tengo pendiente de décadas pasadas. Ha demostrado versatilidad moviéndose entre géneros, aunque parece que el público se decanta por sus partituras de ciencia ficción o terror (tendría que volver a revisar Señales del futuro, un trabajo que recuerdo duro en su audición aislada, de ésos que si logras desencriptar emocionalmente suponen luego una gran recompensa; o profundizar en la recientemente vista por fin Snowpiercer, cuya música notaba durante el metraje que pasaba por etapas de compresión y descompresión, a veces tenue y en otras fiera, como la atmósfera que se respiraba en los propios vagones de ese tren imposible salvo como metáfora). Tiene mucha maña en sus trabajos ligeros: me decanto absolutamente por Las Sesiones, para la película de Helen Hunt, y también es muy destacable la, corregidme si no es así, inédita en formato físico Soul Surfer. Con mucha frecuencia me suele pasar que no acabo de recordar nada de la partitura una vez acabado el largometraje, lo que no quiere decir nada en sí, ni bueno ni malo. Simplemente, probablemente, que tendrá que "entreanr" más el oído respecto al italiano. Gods of Egypt, otra que tengo aún mayoritariamente pendiente, parece que va a convertirse en un buque insignia para los aficionados, probablemente por el género al que representa y, quizá, por qué no, por imprimir esa rara cualidad que tenía Goldsmith de musicalizar como nadie películas saltimbanquis o churreras, malosas con gracejo. Simpatía y nostalgia.

Soy un fan irremediable del italiano, he escuchado casi todas las bandas sonoras que ha escrito: Hellboy, The Thing, 3:10 to Yuma, The Shallows, Red Eye, The Eye, The Wolverine, Blade 2, Mimic, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark... e inclusive The Sessions

PD: Dick Tracy pa la buchaca (todavía no). Aunque sí que es un pequeño desbarajuste lo que veo. Toca hacer de hormiguita o de sastre y hacer pequeños movimientos aquí y allá encajando piezas para buscar un álbum musical óptimo.

Sus manierismos orquestales están muy presentes en la saga Scream, que tengo en buena estima.

Es como si Jake Kasdan hubiese heredado al compositor a través de su padre. El compositor definitivamente se ha establecido con fuerza nuevamente dentro del cine de consumo familiar.

Y Cotillard en la carátula de "Allied" es la viva imagen, de perfil al menos, de Gene Tierney en "Laura".

Bien por JNH. En los 90 y primera mitad de los 00 poseía el don de la ubicuidad en películas de "perfil alto" cosa que parece haber recuperado desde finales de la década pasada.

MIK, quiero mini reseña de cada entrega de Matrix, voy avisando. Y luego, que te ha parecido musicalmente cómo conjunto.

A veces me pregunto cómo hubiese continuado la trayectoria profesional de algunos grandes autores fallecidos antes de tiempo, me vale también para intérpretes. Y en los casos de genios de fuerte carácter y orgullosos como Herrmann o Fielding, más todavía. Por lo emnos el primero de ellos era admirado por realizadores noveles con ganas de comerse el mundo.
¿Más Scorsese y De Palma? Probablemente, al menos por unos pocos años más. Aunque me da que Bennie vivió lo que estaba estipulado mediante contrato invisible. No acabo de imaginármelo llegando a la tercera edad.

Completó el score de Obsession el 9 de mayo de 1975 a las 18:00h, y le regaló la partitura completa dedicada y firmada a De Palma, que tras dos años de relación le había parecido un tipo honrado, con una integridad artística a prueba de bombas y con un delicioso y sardónico sentido del humor . Por su parte, De Palma dijo darse cuenta de que debajo de aquel hombre irascible, terriblemente exigente y de muy difícil trato (maníaco depresivo, de hecho) , había una persona cultivada, sensible, cariñosa (a su manera) e inteligente, que simplemente se había llevado demasiadas decepciones seguidas en la vida (con la gente, a nivel ético/moral/código de conducta).

Paul Schrader y De Palma lo llevaron poco después a una reunión con Scorsese, se hizo cargo de Taxi Driver en un tiempo récord, y falleció el mismo día que terminaron las sesiones de grabación, la nochebuena de 1975.

Parece ser que intentó en numerosas ocasiones (a través de terceros, etc), una reconciliación con Hitchcock, a quién quería más de lo que le gustaba admitir. Habían intimado mucho. Mucho.

Aparentaba por lo menos 10 años más de los que tenía, y se movía con torpeza. Tensión alta, sobrepeso, y consumía grandes cantidades de tabaco en pipa desde hacía décadas, vicio que ni siquiera los médicos habían conseguido que dejase.

Tripley, si no has escuchado lo último de Daniel Pemberton (Jobs, Man from Uncle), ya tardas. Estupenda (para variar)

From 1967 to his death in 1975 Norma Shepherd was Bernard Herrmann’s third wife. She is currently living in Southern England where I talked with her in 2004.

And did he live up to his reputation?

"But he was very, very kind. He would never be rude or nasty to somebody weaker. Or to an animal or to anything weaker, he would not. He’d love to do it to people he thought needed bringing down, arrogant people who had no right to be arrogant. If he had a right to be arrogant you could be as arrogant as anything like Stokowski. If you had no right Herrmann would see to it that you were humbled a bit."

He died fairly young actually…

"He had very high blood pressure and this is what caused these outbursts. It was a disease, and they gave him pills and he couldn’t take them as he couldn’t talk properly and couldn’t compose. They calmed him down, so he didn’t take them. So he knew what he was doing."

"He was still 17 in the head, really."

......

"…It’s impossible to image him 90. It’s almost a blessing that he went earlier. He would have been hopeless and miserable if he couldn’t do what he was doing. Like he was when they gave him those pills for blood pressure. And he was miserable because he wasn’t himself. So maybe it was good that he wasn’t ninety so he couldn’t do what he was doing."

It’s Alive…

"He did it. He adored Larry Cohen. The Cohen’s were with me when he died. I stayed at their house that night. We were out there with them the night he died. He finished recording Taxi Driver and then Larry Cohen asked: “Are you too tired or have you the strength to look at the next film you are doing for me?” And Benny had just done Taxi Driver and then we saw this film with Janelle and Larry. And that was the evening. And when he died that night they came next day and I stayed with them a couple of days before coming back."

Hitchcock

"Everybody says they never spoke again.
It was in Universal Studios, this must be 69, 70, 71ish. Herrmann said: “See that tiny little office over there, that’s Hitch’. And that stupid little parking place. Hitch used to have an empire with big offices and a big staff. Then they made it down to half that size, then they made it to half that size… We are going over to say hello.” Actually [Herrmann] got a record; he was always intending to give him a record he just made. But it wasn’t a film thing. It was either Moby Dick or something of his concert pieces to take it and give to Hitch. Peggy, Hitchcock’s secretary was there. Hitch came out, Benny said: “I thought you’d like a copy of this.” “How are you?” etc. and he introduced me. And Hitchcock was cool, but they did meet. They met, I was there. And when Herrmann came out again he said: “What a great reduction in Hitch’s status.”

Benny never stopped being rather bitter about that row with Hitchcock. Although I told you he was able to shut things behind him, people who offended him. This he didn’t shut. He was always very hurt by that and delighted when everybody said that [latest Hitchcock] film was a flop.

By the end of his career Herrmann was getting hot again

And now what comes up: Brian de Palma comes, Larry Cohen comes, Martin Scorsese comes. Herrmann was getting hotter and hotter. In fact Spielberg was meeting Benny the day he died to do the next one… and all this. And they were all in their late twenties and they were all after Herrmann. And guess what happened? Lionel Newman phoned Benny: “We got this big film coming up…” And Benny said and I was there: “Sorry, I’ve decided to run with the kids!” and he put the phone down. And he was so happy. He was shaking with laughter! And he laughed and he laughed. And he phoned everybody he knew in the world…

He rescatado fragmentos de este artículo que leí hace unos pocos años al considerarlos de interés como complemento a la sucinta radiografía que nos ha hecho Branagh/Doyle.

Por si a alguien le interesa además conocer los entresijos que rodearon a la pareja Sam Peckinpah (director) - Jerry Fielding (compositor), otra colaboración artística explosiva aunque menos publicitada, le recomiendo que adquiera la Banda Sonora rechazada de la película The Getaway ("La huída"), protagonizada por Steve McQueen, editada por Film Score Monthly en un set de doble disco, que aparte de contener una joya inédita de la música cinematográfica de los ´70, presenta un DVD en el que se documenta la relación, a veces tensa pero siempre con respeto mutuo, que atravesó esta singular pareja a través de las mujeres que convivieron con ellos. El destino ató la etapa más lúcida de ambas trayectorias durante los años que estuvieron juntos.

Jerry Fielding (1922-1980) fue uno de los grandes talentos que cristalizaron en esa década de la mano de realizadores como el propio Peckinpah, Clint Eastwood o Michael Winner, realizándose como autor en el medio a través del funky urbano tan en boga por entonces como por partituras desafiantes e intrincadas y melodías con impronta barroca. Tras deshacerse la relación artística con "Bloody Sam", en los últimos años Fielding acusó dolencias cardíacas que le llevaron prematuramente a su fallecimiento mientras dormía, como el propio Herrmann, sin haber dejado de componer.

El score original una llegó a editarse y se quemó en un incendio , y el film sólo llegó a emitirse después de su paso por los cines en TV en abierto. Literalmente no había manera de escuchar este trabajo hasta que Tadlow la reconstruyó recientemente, llenando así un agujero en el catálogo del compositor. La partitura completa sólo abarca 35 minutos
