Why Joss Whedon’s Batgirl Is the Hero We Deserve

The Avengers director is crossing enemy lines to make a movie with DC Comics.

Hot on the heels of some splashy celebrations of his early work with a young female superhero named Buffy Summers, Joss Whedon is back at it again. The director has signed on to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl film for Warner Bros. as part of the DC Extended Universe, according to a new report—and this union couldn’t possibly make more sense.

The biggest news, here, is that after an embattled and, in Whedon’s words, “unpleasant” struggle with Marvel Studios over Avengers: Age of Ultron, Whedon is, effectively, defecting to the enemy camp to lighten up their grimdark rival franchise. (Complicating matters even further: as superhero fans know full well, Whedon spent years trying to get a Wonder Woman film off the ground with DC in the early 2000s. That project was ultimately quashed.) Whedon, we can hope, negotiated himself a bit more creative control when it comes to this Batgirl project, and Warner will benefit from a presumably zippier property that might serve as counter-programming to the dire slate cooked up by director and DC E.U. visionary Zack Snyder. Variety, which broke the news, describes the coming Batgirl film as a “standalone”—so, potentially, it wouldn’t have to strain to fit the tone of the rest of the franchise. That said, it will feature “other characters from the world of Gotham.”

One potential character could be the Justice League version of Commissioner Gordon, who will appear in the upcoming Justice League film. Batgirl is, after all, his daughter, Barbara Gordon. There’s also room for any number of the female villains who are currently slated to appear alongside Margot Robbie in the upcoming Harley Quinn spin-off film, titled Gotham City Sirens.

But no matter who else populates the movie, it’s exciting to contemplate what Whedon might do with a character like Babs. Will the Buffy creator get his feminist cred back? Though there’s been a recent, fashionable re-evaluation of Joss Whedon as “progessive” storyteller, some audiences—thirsty for more female-centric stories told by women—have decided to recast him as a well-meaning but “problematic” father of fighters like Buffy Summers, River Tam, and Echo. See, for example, the drubbing Whedon got for the Black Widow story line in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which inspired Whedon to take a long break from Twitter.

That long break from public view may be why the new comic Whedon announced at Comic-Con in 2015, Twist, still has yet to see the light of day. That comic, Whedon promised at the time, would address “the most personal question that can be put to us, which is why isn’t there a Victorian female Batman?” The series was intended to be “a Victorian thriller about a meek chambermaid who is fed to a dark horror—but instead of dying, she returns, with knowledge, power, and rage she can neither deny nor control.” While we may never get that story, it looks like we might get the next best thing instead. She’s no Victorian, female Batman—but Barbara Gordon may be the hero we, Whedon, and Warner Bros. need right now.
