With 3D still fighting to gain mass acceptance, many proponents of the technology have openly complained about the consumer electronics manufacturer/Hollywood partnerships that have resulted in the limited distribution of popular 3D Blu-ray titles.
The latest electronics manufacturer to partner with a Hollywood studio is Samsung. The A/V enthusiast website Big Picture Big Sound is reporting that the large South Korean electronics company has entered into an agreement with Dreamworks for the exclusive rights to the Kung Fu Panda 2 3D Blu-ray disc.
According to the website, Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg mentioned Samsung’s rights to the 3D disc during a technical discussion at the Dreamworks campus in Los Angeles.
Big Picture Big Sound makes the point that Samsung’s ownership of the disc shouldn’t surprise anyone because of prior exclusivity deals between the two companies, which include the rights for Monsters vs. Aliens and How to Train your Dragon.
Speculating on how public will be able to purchase the movie, the website adds that once the video is released consumers will likely have to purchase a Samsung 3D Starter Kit that includes a flat-panel TV and 3D glasses to get the 3D version of Kung Fu Panda 2.
