Aint It Cool is reporting that "an incredibly reliable source" has told them that Brett Ratner is the front runner to park his bum in the Wolf Man director's chair recently vacated by Mark Romanek. Now, this would be a bad idea for the following reasons.
1. Ratner is not what you'd call a visionary. He can make something look pretty and slick or make a close fit of another director's style (see his work on X-Men 3 and Red Dragon, which visually imitated those who went before). He's perfectly capable of turning in a watchable movie, but a re-invention of this story needs some passion and a new way of looking at things. We should all be hoping for more than watchable.
2. He's not an actors' director. You have an amazing cast here, Universal. Benicio Del Toro as the Wolf Man; Anthony Hopkins as his father; Emily Blunt as, well, we don't know, but she's great. Don't squander those incredible talents by asking them to just go through the motions. Last time Ratner worked with Hopkins the result was a camp and comedic Hannibal Lecter. Bad thing.
3. Ratner can't do scary. See again Red Dragon, if you must.
4. HE MADE RUSH HOUR 3!
Please Universal, we know this must be a panicked time, with your cast and crew all set to shoot and nobody to call the shots. But, please, take the time to think about this. We were incredibly excited about the film with Romanek at the controls, but this frightens us more than the movie possibly could. Please consider another director (the suggestion of Matt Reeves intrigued us) or make nice with Romanek. Let him have a nice big budget or send him a muffin basket. Everybody likes muffins.

Though Harry Knowles reported yesterday that Brett Ratner was very close to signing to take over directing duties on The Wolf Man, The Hollywood Reporter is now saying that there are four directors in contention. And they're an extremely varied bunch.
Those apparently meeting with Universal about the movie are Ratner, Frank Darabont, James Mangold and Joe Johnston. They would all produce very different movies, based on their past projects. Ratner we discussed yesterday.
Johnston's a real adventure movie man, having directed Jurassic Park III, Jumanji and Hidalgo. We hadn't imagined Wolf Man as fitting in that kind of mould, but there's nothing to say that Johnston couldn't go darker. He's certainly capable of making something entertaining, but we don't quite see the fit.
Mangold's a very interesting choice. He's a real character man, most famous for 3:10 To Yuma and Walk The Line. We'd trust that he'd make the movie all about why and how the wolf starts to take over Benicio Del Toro's character and we'd be very interested to see his take, but we have to say that if we were choosing, which obviously we're not, we'd unquestionably go for Darabont.
Firstly, the Shawshank Redemption director has easily the best CV of the bunch. He's brilliant at getting to the heart of character and story and he's not afraid of going to dark places. Also, he loves genre movies. We'd give him the job based solely on his almost brilliant, and still tragically without UK release date, The Mist. It's frightening, it's got terrific character work and it completely commits to being a horror movie, but one that treats the bizarre in a realistic way. That's exactly what The Wolf Man needs. Give this guy the job, please Universal.
Otro voto para Fran Darabont,pero que se haga un gran esfuerzo para hacer una película de menos de tres horas.:sudor
Si porque aunque todas sus pelis son un puntazo son algo largas. Una cinta de 2 horas con el personaje en cuestión, si es este señor el que la hace (aún me cuesta creer que finalmente va a ser Ratner) puede ser una obra maestra.Cita:

Es que las 2 últimas pelis que he visto del monstruo en cuestión son "lobo" (la de Nicholson) y "Van Helsing" y como que me supieron a poco.
Yo creo que entre los candidatos idóneos deberían estar Alexandre Aja (que ahora está ultimando Mirrors), Victor Salva (estuvo a punto de rodar Invasión, por lo que merece una nueva oportunidad), Frank Darabont (no he visto La Niebla, pero el telefilme Enterrados vivos demostraba que había ciertas inquietudes hacia el género) o David Slade (el firmante de Hard Candy o 30 días de oscuridad).
Darabont, Aja, Salva... cualquiera de ellos mejor que EL INÚTIL DE BRETT RATTNER.
Ya se podría haber tragado el sapo el bueno de Romanek y hacer la película a pesar de las diferencias creativas. Después de su interesante debut y sus 5 años de inactividad, éste proyecto le hubiese venido muy bien para lanzar su carrera.
Si Ratner se encarga de la dirección, yo ni pasaré por taquilla.

Hombre, siendo una opción menos mala que la de Ratner, Johnston no es la clase de director encaje al 100% con este proyecto, sobre todo porque este tío tiene un ramalazo de "Spielberg de 2ª" con alguna cosita más o menos apañada (Rocketeer, Jumanji) pero tampoco es para caerse de la butaca.Cita:

Me alegro por la elección. Este tío me lo ha hecho pasar en grande cuando chavalín con cositas que a casi todos (poner "a todos" a veces es demasiado arriesgado) nos ha gustado: Rocketeer, jumanji.
Me alegro porque este tío, si se lo curra, le puede dar un toque entretenido a la historia. Ahora hay que ver como se desenvuelve el chaval con la trama porque para hombre lobo "aventurero" ya tenemos al hombre lobo de Sommers en Van Helsing y no me acabó de cuadrar demasiado.
Si le da el toque serio que se merece la historia pero luego mete todo lo que crea conveniente como para que haya la aventura y acción que cuadre y corresponda bienvenido sea entonces.
Al final se va a convertir en una pelicula hecha por los productores del film, para "re-orientar" el hombre lobo hace falta un tio con personalidad y carisma propia.
Eso me temo, va a ser un director-títere, pero le prefiero mil veces antes que a Ratner. No obstante, una película que mezcle a Benicio del Toro, hombres lobo y Anthony Hopkins siempre llama mi atención.
Al menos ya se enfrentó a Drácula. Ahora toca este. Podría contratarlo Del Toro para cuando haga Frankenstein. Sería su trilogía particular de monstruos míticos.Cita:

En fin, sigo disgustado, Joe Johnston está acotando terreno desconocido y esto me huele a reformulación tipo Stephen Sommers y "La momia"; o peor, "Van Helsing". Aún no está todo perdido, pero podrían haber escogido a alguien más experimentado en el género o con más personalidad.
No se me ocurre ahora ningún director para esta película, pero Johnston no me parece a priori buena elección.
No es que me parezca un inepto, pues su labor en los efectos especiales es para enmarcar, pero creo que sus películas son "para toda la familia" y no me apetece otra Van Helsing como decían en otro post.
Me apetece ver una película seria sobre hombres lobos y a poder ser R, y no una peli teen hecha para llenar salas de quinceañeros

Weaving ("The Matrix" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogies) will play Det. Aberline. Del Toro will play the hirsute title character and Anthony Hopkins his dad. Blunt has been cast as the female lead in the project, which Joe Johnston will direct.
Filming begins next month in London. David Self did a rewrite of Andrew Kevin Walker's script. The movie is produced by Scott Stuber, Mary Parent, Sean Daniel and Rick Yorn. Universal has set a February 13, 2009 release date for the pic.
