Shout! Factory and Morgan Creek Productions officially announced today a strategic distribution alliance to bring Clive Barker’s classic horror film Nightbreed extended director’s cut to the home entertainment marketplace in the U.S and Canada and on digital entertainment platforms next year. The announcement was made by Shout! Factory’s founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos along with David Robinson, President of Morgan Creek Productions. The news initially broke at Comic-Con 2013, however the agreement formally reached by both parties occurred today.


For years rumors swirled about substantial missing footage from the film. A fan-driven movement was created (www.OccupyMidian.com) to see the full version of the film restored and re-released, which was not only a more faithful adaptation of Clive Barker’s book 'Cabal,' but is what originally he intended Nightbreed to be.


Clive Barker said, 'I had a dream about the tribes of the moon. They would live in a city called Midian and, though they were monsters of every shape and size, they would be the heroes of a movie called Nightbreed. However, when I made the movie, the studio was not comfortable with this inversion of the classic structure. They wanted the monsters to be simple-minded scare machines, while I wanted them to be the dark side of all of us, mysterious and misunderstood. Finally, with this new version of Nightbreed, which contains over forty five minutes of previously unseen material, my original vision has been realized. Come with me to Midian, the city of monsters. The tribes of the moon await us.'


'We are excited by this opportunity with Morgan Creek and are huge fans of Clive Barker. His cinematic works and brilliant storytelling continue to captivate fans worldwide,' stated Shout! Factory’s founders in a joint statement. 'We look forward to working closely with Clive to bring his original vision to life.'


Shout!’s Scream Factory plans an aggressive rollout of Nightbreed extended director’s cut through physical home entertainment releases and a variety of digital entertainment distribution platforms sometimes next year.

Firstly, the ideal scenario was always that the actual original film elements would be found for the purposes of the restoration. Sadly, this hasn't happened, so the DVD will be produced using the second-best option of restoring the VHS for the extra scenes.


"There's still no sign of the negatives," opines Cherrington. "We've had a few leads that have all been dead ends, although I really hope we can find more film elements. They found most of the original Wicker Man on film just today, so it could happen!"


Secondly, a Blu-ray to go along with the DVD doesn't seem to be guaranteed at this point. But, says Cherrington, "I've spent the last year researching what can be done with the VHS materials, and I know that with money and time this can look at least as good as the Alien3 workprint. I have every hope for 1080p!"


Finally, with Scream Factory a US company, this seems, so far, to be a US only release, with questions of region locking unclear. So for the UK and Europe? "We have a distributor of fine genre cinema who wants to put The Cabal Cut out in the UK," Cherrington promises. "Morgan Creek wants it out there, and so does Seraphim, so it's only a matter of time. Once we've worked out the rights it will be out in Clive Barker's and my own home country."


"Nobody is willingly witholding a [European] release," adds Miller. "These are complicated legal matters but everyone is working their way through them!"

Aunque en el momento de esa entrevista no se habían localizado las latas que contenían las escenas excluidas del montaje inicialmente realizado por Barker, recientemente fueron localizados los elementos originales en 35mm, de ellos parte el nuevo máster creado
por Scream Factory:

However, the movie studio edited the film extensively and several scenes were excised or rearranged – much to Director Clive Barker's disappointment. Since then, a fan-driven movement was created (www.OccupyMidian.com) to see the full version of the film restored and re-released. Scream Factory, in conjunction with Warner Bros., was able to find the long-thought-missing original film elements and combed through over 600 boxes to locate not only the lost scenes but a treasure trove of never-before-seen footage as well. Speaking personally, I didn't allow myself to believe that it would. 72 dólares, uf.... a ese precio creo que paso, me tocará esperar con los dedos cruzados la otra edición. confiemos en que lleve castellano o, puestos a pedir, que la traigan a España (mientras sea a buena calidad y no a manos de una compañía de esas BD-R....).

Yo ya he reservado mi copia de la edición limitada. Una edición con tres discos de esta película mítica con dos metrajes y extras no me parece tan caro, al cambio, 53 euros. He visto cosas mucho más aberrantes. Además Shout Factory siempre asegura cálidad visual y sonora.

Tienes razón. lo que pasa es que al bolsillo (el mío) escuece.

Haría el desembolso siempre y cuando llevara castellano en alguno de los montajes. pero dudo que eso ocurra.

A mi me parece una pasada, por un amaray con funda, 53 euros.
No llego a entender si es que esa edición lleva algo más, a parte del disco de extras, porque la diferencia de precio con la "normal" me parece una aberración.

No es barato pero tampoco me parece aberrante. Me parece más aberrante el pack del Dia De La Bestia en Alemania que cuesta casi igual y la calidad es bastante inferioe

El pack del día de la bestia también se puede considerar caro, aunque nada que ver. Tiene un pvp de 29.99 euros, y es un muy chulo digibook (bastante más caro de producir que un amaray con funda, claro). Es igual o más de exclusivo (1.500 de tirada, aunque para la zona de alemania/austria, claro, que no es USA).

Teniendo en cuenta que una peli a pelo puede costar de salida entre 15/20 euros, no veo aberrante un precio de 29.99 dada la limitación y el "material" de empaquetado. La calidad a/v de la película que va en el bd es harina de otro costal, en efecto, deja mucho que desear cómo ha quedado el máster hd.

Pero en mi caso sólo hablaba del tipo de packaging. Ciertamente, el contenido el suculento.
Aunque ya digo que yo no entraba en el componente más o menos subjetivo del contenido audiovisual.
Ya que si me pongo a ello, el disco de extras presuntamente sin subtitulos ni en inglés, será un bonito posavasos para mi.
Eso sí, ganazas de ver nightbreed el montaje del director y el corte de cines, para los cuales al menos incluyen subtítulos en inglés, que me valen.

A mi, como digo, se me va de precio para un amaray con funda. Esta edición se merecía una presentación más a la altura, en mi opinión, y por ese precio podrían haber dado hasta una cajota bien hermosa con unas cuantas chuches.

Eso sí, comprando en la web de la editora, al menos veo que tienen el detalle de regalar un poster con el artwork y garantizan un número de limitada más bajo, ya que sólo ellos venden de la nº 1 a la 3.000. Algo es algo.

Alguien puede aportar información de primera mano?

Las criticas la dejan muy bien.

Muy buena edición, con varios documentales actuales en HD (todo el casting de la película está muy viejuno) y audiocomentarios.

Subtítulos sólo en inglés y dos pistas de audio DTS-HD Master audio con el original 2.0 y una nueva mezcla 5.1, en inglés claro.

Imagen restaurada, sin filtros, que mantiene algún que otro defecto pero no ha perdido definición.

Os he subido unas cuantas capturillas en este hilo.

A la información aportada por rantamplan añado que la edición limitada viene con la edición original estrenada en 1990 también en alta definición y un libreto de 40 páginas con fotos de los personajes, carteles y un texto Mark Allan Miller (vicepresidente de Seraphim Films) hablando de todo el proceso de gestación de la edición desde el inicio; todo ello (las dos cajas blu ray y el libreto) metido en una funda de cartón duro. La edición es bastante chula (y un pelín cara!) pero merece la pena si eres como yo: fan devoto de la obra de Clive Barker, alucinaste con el libro Cabal y con la película original.

Los que tenéis esta edición, ¿podéis aclarar si es libre de zona o no? (El disco principal y, si es posible, también el disco limitado con el montaje antiguo.)

Senogul, los tres discos (montaje del director, extras y montaje de cines) están bloqueados a "Zona A". Comprobado con los discos en el reproductor.

Leyendo información en la IMDB, me encuentro con 3 montajes:

The Cabal cut: 145 min
The director's cut: 120 min

Entiendo que esta edición lleva el de 102 y 120 minutos... ¿Se sabe algo del montaje de 145 minutos? ¿Si se hizo hace tiempo y por qué ahora se descarta?

Ese montaje se hizo con todas las escenas en bruto de la pelicula, incluso habia personajes que morian dos veces. No era el montaje del director. En el bluray del director's cut hay escenas eliminadas, asi que añadiendoselas yo creo que llegara a algo asi. Ademas tiene calidad vhs porque esto fue antes de que se encontraran los negativos del montaje del director.
Tengo la peli en bluray pero no puedo verla, me tengo que comprar un reproductor multizona. La he tenido que bajar para verla. Muy triste si...
