Avalon la estrenó en salas (alguna) el pasado 30 de Agosto. Esperemos que anuncien pronto su edición en blu-ray. En UK la acabam de sacar, y en USA está anunciada para Enero.

SINOPSIS:
Cuando el gobierno de Indonesia fue derrocado por el ejército en 1965, más de un millón de personas fueron asesinadas en menos de un año. Anwar y sus amigos fueron promocionados a jefes de escuadrones de la muerte y el mismo Anwar en persona asesinó a cientos de personas con sus propias manos. En The Act of Killing Anwar y sus amigos acceden a contar sus historias sobre las matanzas. Pero la idea que tienen de aparecer en pantalla no tiene nada en común con el género documental; ellos quieren ser estrellas del celuloide de su género cinematográfico favorito: el cine de gansgsters, los westerns, los musicales. Ellos escriben los guiones. Ellos se interpretan a sí mismos. Y ellos mismos interpretan a sus víctimas. The Act of Killing es una pesadilla – un viaje a los recuerdos y las fantasías de los autores impenitentes y del impactantemente banal régimen de corrupción e impunidad en el que habitan.

Existen dos versiones: la corta, de algo menos de dos horas (unos 117'), que es la estrenada en cines en Europa, me parece, y un director's cut de 2h40' que es la versión que se exhibió en Indonesia.
Según blu-ray.com la edición brit de dogwoof llevará este montaje largo, aunque el mkv que rula por ahí, con el logo de la editora británica y subs quemados, es el montaje corto.

The 115-minute version is generally the theatrical version. It was presented at the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals. The 159-minute version competed at the CPH: DOX festival and won its main award. It is also the main version being released in Indonesia.
The 159-min version is the director's cut. It is the only version being released in Indonesia, and was released alongside the 115-min version in Danish cinemas. Compared to the shorter version, the 159-minute version reveals more of the filmmaking method and also explores the role of propaganda cinema in maintaining anti-communist fervor. The fiction scenes take over the film's form to the extent that ultimately the boundaries between fiction and documentary blur. In the final act, Anwar's descent in the long version is longer and more complex.

Anunciada la edición americana, con los dos montajes. ¡Avalon, coño, di algo! Estarán esperando a que salgan las nominaciones a los Oscars, porque esta peli es carne de Óscar al mejor documental. Eso sí, no es tan touchy-feely como la de Searching for Sugar Man.:cuniao

Hoy he visto por filmin este peliculon ganas de agregarla a la colección.

Except for the commentary, all of the extras accompany the theatrical cut.

Commentary with Director Joshua Oppenheimer and Executive Producer Werner Herzog (director's cut): A combination discussion, interview and critical appreciation, this is a valuable commentary on multiple levels. It contains substantial information about the shooting of the film, including crucial detail about when certain scenes were filmed in the extended shooting schedule and a few revelations about events off-camera. Herzog often prompts Oppenheimer for more information about his technique, and just as often stops to comment on specific shots and edits that he admires, even ones that, as Herzog laughingly acknowledges, would probably get Oppenheimer thrown out of film school. At one point, he even draws a comparison between a scene in The Act of Killing and one from his own Aguirre: The Wrath of God—high praise indeed.


Interview with Joshua Oppenheimer on Democracy Now (1080i; 1.78:1; 45:32): Democracy Now is an independent news program airing on Pacifica, PBS, NPR and local access stations, among others. This installment was shown on July 19, 2013, the date that The Act of Killing opened in New York City. In the first segment, Oppenheimer provides additional historical context for the 1965 murders re-created in the film. In the second, he talks about his early interviews with killers and his attempts to interview victims' families, which the Indonesian government stopped; Anwar Congo was the 41st killer he interviewed. In the third segment, Oppenheimer provides a theory of why Anwar re-enacted his crimes as he did, and also describes the reaction to the film in Indonesia.


VICE Presents Werner Herzog and Errol Morris on THE ACT OF KILLING (1080p; 1.78:1; 12:30): Interviewed separately, Herzog and Morris discuss what makes The Act of Killing unique. (Vice is an HBO news magazine program, but this segment was apparently never broadcast.)


Deleted Scenes (1080p; 1.78:1): All of these scenes are remarkable, but obviously not everything could be included. Especially noteworthy is the fourth scene, in which the propaganda-minded newspaper publisher declares that he himself could never kill anyone, because he is a "humanist", then later casually tells Oppenheimer that "we" would have killed him too.

Booklet: The enclosed insert contains a reprint of executive producer Errol Morris' lengthy essay "The Murders of Gonzago", originally published on Slate.com on July 10, 2013. Among other subjects, Morris looks at connections between the Indonesian history that underlies The Act of Killing and the history of U.S. involvement in Vietnam that was the subject of his own film The Fog of War.

Ya tenemos aquí la edición española de Avalon, que saldrá el 19 de febrero: dos discos, con las dos versiones, de cines y del director, peeeero.... únicamente en DVD :bigcry

También hay una edición UK. Pero dudo que lleve subtítulos en castellano.

Además, como no ganó el oscar, ni de coña.

En la revista británica Sight & Sound la votaron mejor documental de 2013, y no contentos con ello, también la votaron mejor película de 2013 en la categoría general. Vamos, que parece que les gustó. El dvd de Avalon ya está a la venta, con fundita y tal. 13 euritos.

Tengo la edición UK, romita2. Te puedo confirmar que solo lleva subtítulos quemados en inglés en los fragmentos en que se habla un idioma diferente del mismo, que es lo que sucede —si mal no recuerdo— durante la mayor parte del metraje. Y se incluyen los dos cortes: el del director y el "theatrical".
