Como curiosidad: he escrito a Lobster me ha respondido el señor Serge Bromberg (el que ha liderado la restauración).

Mi mail:

Hi dears:

Is a pleasure to me write you. I´m a Spanish fan totally fascinated with the restoration made to “A trip to the moon”, it´s incredible.

I have a couple of questions, that could be great if you could answer me:

1) How do you know that the colors of the film are the real ones? Exists a catalogue or something with the original colors? I mean, looking the WONDERFUL documentary about the restoration, is said that the restored copy is a Spanish one, and viewing the movie, I had the doubt (due to two details) if the colors are really the original or, maybe, a Spanish owner of the copy changed the color (repainted) of some frames in the 20-30 decades of the XX century. The strange details are:
i. In the rocket launching, the flag that appears (three bars, red, yellow, red) is the Spanish one
ii. In the party after the rocket landing in the Earth, appears the Spanish republican flag (red, yellow, violet bars).
2) The second question is, why you used 1080 i instead 1080 p for the BD? A technical reason?

La respuesta:

Dear Javier,

The colors are the ones from the print. The hand coloring was unique for each print, and obviously, this one as hand painted for a Spanish customer, which explians the flag. But yes, the colors are 100% authentic, and are the ones we found on this print.

Remember that the film was shot in black and white (and actually the background was painted in grey tones, without colors, to compensate the defects of orthochromatic film). It is possible that, if in the future an other print turns up, it may have different colors, which will be just as authentic as ours.

As for the choice of the Blu Ray system, I must say this was not in my hands, and have no answer to this.

Best

Serge
