Los Angeles (AP) -- Spokesman for Mel Gibson and The Disney Corp. announced today the signing of a multibillion dollar deal to have the scandal-beleagured movie star direct an update of D.W. Griffith's "Intolerance." The silent-era classic was Griffith's act of atonement for the racial bias seen in his 1917 blockbuster "The Birth of a Nation."

"It just seemed like a natural," said Avri Oren, head of Disney, which is slated to release Gibson's "Apocalypto" at Christmas. Oren said production will push ahead immediately without Gibson, who will join shooting when he completes treatment at an undisclosed rehabilitiation center. "We want to get this out around Purim,." Oren said, referring to the Jewish holiday that celebrates the vanquishing of the ancient Iranians by Jewish warriors. "It will be something we can all celebrate," saying the timing of the release would help underscore that Gibson did not, in fact, have a problem with Jews starting or winning wars.

The company is seeking a hamentaschen tie-in with McDonald's Happy Meals. "Disney is still very much in the business of family entertainment," Oren said.

Asked if Gibson's "Intolerance" will have subtitles, as did the original as well as Gibson's "Passion of the Christ," Oren said "That will be up to Mel. He's the artist." Griffith's classic will be renamed "Tolerance." Gibson could not be reached for comment.

When asked to confirm rumors Katie Holmes will star, Oren declined comment. Angelina Jolie denied earlier today she will be involved. John Travolta and Tom Cruise have reportedly expressed interest in the project through their agents, as has Jeremy Piven.
