En el libro, TV (The Book): Two Experts Pick the Greatest American Shows of All Time, escrito por Alan Sepinwall and Matt Zoller Seitz, ambos críticos hacen una lista de las 100 mejores series estadounidenses de la historia.

La idea ha sido listar aquellas más importantes según la influencia en el género, la innovación, importancia continuada etc.

La metodología ha sido: solo series estadounidenses, ya completadas y de ficción narrativa. Queda por tanto fuera las series aún en emisión, documentales, especiales etc Se han dado algunas excepciones como The Simpsons ya que pese a no estar completada tiene una trayectoria lo suficientemente larga como para medir ya su impacto.
