I went to a screening of this today and really liked the score. A lot of it is very familiar Elfman in fantasy awe and wonder mode (like Oz) and some lovely tender emotional stuff in the first half. Even if a lot of it is perhaps a tad overfamiliar (but enjoyable) it’s rich with highlights like an energetic opening montage cue (2nd track on the album), the lovely soaring theme, a fantastic rendition of pink elephants (this will be a favourite for Elfman fans), the old fashioned breakout cue and a very bombastic finale. There’s also a tonne of source music, not sure if all of it is Elfman but some of it clearly is, and he’s obviously enjoying working in the classic circus sound. I very much looking forward to hearing the album in 2 weeks!
