Overall rating - 4.9, POOR!

It's mind-boggling that SCEA is charging $60 for what amounts to a buggy, stripped-down version of a PlayStation 2 game that wasn't all that good to begin with. Sure, there are moments here and there where the game is fun, but these fleeting moments are always ended by one (or more) of the game's glaring flaws. Other than having support for 1080p, the game in no way, shape, or form takes advantage of the PlayStation 3's abilities.

How does the PS3 compare to stand-alone blu-ray players?

PC World have been stacking up the PS3s crudentials as a blu-ray player. They believe the Blu-ray Disc playback is "very good". They highlight that the PS3 may not be the best option for a home theater, however is competent and comes in at around $625 for a 60gb PS3 with the remote. Much less than current stand-alone players, which range from $899 to $1500.

-Respectable load time of 24 seconds, when inserting a disc into the front-loading slot as soon as you power up the unit.

-PlayStation 3 appeared noticeably sharper and crisper movie

-Cheaper than stand-alone ( even when you have bought the remote) that range from $899-$1500

-Can resume playback; I discovered, if you exit movie player app to do something else it remembers where you were.

-pop-up info display elegantly designed--unobtrusive, yet easily readable

-No LCD screen: won't be distracted by a glowing LCD.

-the only BD player on the market that can play video you have recorded on your own BD discs, using PC-based Blu-ray burners

-PS3 supports the new HDMI 1.3 spec also plays standard DVD formats (DVD-ROM and DVD±RW), plus audio CDs, CD-RW, and Super Audio CD.


Negatives
-If you want to play a movie with the PS3 unit already on,you have to go through the menu to load it up and name of movie not show only "BD-ROM".

-Using two hands to navigate in the movie with SIXAXIS, however they point out that Philips and Harmony also have two handed controllers.

-Remote not included with PS3 and PlayStation 3 manual provided no clues on how to use the controller's buttons for movie navigation.

- PS3 offers 1080p60 (where the 60 refers to frames per second) playback, which is less optimal than 1080p24 for filmed content

-No BDLive content support(yet) however other players do not support it yet either.

-the company has not announced plans to support the full, updated version of the Advanced Access Content System (AACS), that allows you to copy content from a disc to another device via USB or memory card, for example.

Yep you guessed it, the PS3 is subject to a few technical glitches as reported by early adopters. Lack of upscaling, overheating units, HDMI failure with certain TV brands and backwards compatibility issues have all been reported. In terms of hardware meltdowns, we have yet to hear of a PS3 mistakenly scorching users' flesh off or ejecting discs at lethal speeds when not switched off a certain way -- it's always best to check the early-adopter mortality rate before purchasing a new system. However, various gamers and retailers (with demonstration kiosks) have reported to IGN and on message boards instances of systems overheating -- we have yet to hear of a PS3 being put out of commission permanently (as with some Xbox 360s as well as early models of PlayStation 1) at this time. Conditions where overheating have occurred have not been documented in detail -- we are hearing these reports largely from retail owners, and would guess that the plastic casing of the retail kiosk itself is not an ideal one for the PS3 system -- but we will report back if more widespread overheating problems flair up.

Sony's Jack Tretton doesn't appear to view the backwards compatibility issues of the PS3 a major problem at all, sarcastly remarking he'd like to see his car fly and make breakfast for him too.

I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast, but that's an unrealistic expectation. We've reported problems on only 200 of the 8000 PlayStation 1 and 2 games. I would challenge the average consumer to say that there are significant problems with any of the games in their library.

A volte le cose accadono per caso: succede che ti pare di aver notato un'imperfezione nel "cofano" frontale di PlayStation 3 e provi a indagare. Il risultato? Che il suddetto cofano ti rimane in mano, o meglio, solamente la placca con la scritta PlayStation 3. Non è la nostra PS3 a essere difettata, la scocca della console Sony è palesemente pensata per poter far scivolare a incastro tutta la maschera frontale. E' sufficiente spingere delicatamente con le dita la placca di plastica verso il basso. In questo modo la console si rende disponibile a ulteriori personalizzazioni che di sicuro non mancheranno, proprio come succede con Xbox 360.

Sony pierde hasta 300 dólares con cada PS3

Pierden 241,35 dólares con el modelo de 60GB y 306,85 con el de 20GB.


La publicación especializada NextGen ha ofrecido un estudio en el que analiza los gastos de Sony en referencia a la producción de PlayStation 3, a través del que se deriva que la compañía pierde 306,85 dólares por cada consola de 20GB y 241,35 dólares por el modelo de 60GB.


Según el estudio, el coste total de producción del modelo de 20GB asciende a los 805,85 dólares por consola, mientras que la de 60GB alcanza los 849,35 dólares. Estos costes se deben, principalmente, al elevado coste del procesador gráfico RSX (129 dólares) y el lector Blu-Ray (125 dólares). El estudio ofrece como comparación el coste de producción del modelo Premium de Xbox 360, que asciende a 323,30 dólares y se vende por 400 dólares.

Sony pierde 300 pavos y Microsoft gana (o por lo menos no pierde) 70 pavos?

Pues entonces no se a qué esperan a comerse el mercado bajando el precio, o sacando packs con juegos y acesorios a precio de premium standart...

En el Metro del viernes aparecen unas declaraciones de un directivo de Sony que son para enmarcar, a ver si mañana las copio (aunque irían mejor en las Console Wars...)

Empiezan fuerte, con videos, trailers y demos. Microsoft debería aprender y meter más contenido multimedia, trailers de pelis y HD-DVDs, sobre todo ahora que sale la unidad y quiere implantar el formato. A ver si la competencia hace que mejore varios aspectos que tiene dejados... como la retrocompatibilidad.

Los juegos de pago, parecen tener precios muy similares o superiores a los de X360. Malditas microtransaciones!

Si Xbox Live siendo de Microsoft sacara alquiler de pelis en HD vía Live, sería la bomba.

Declaraciones de Nick Sharples, director europeo de comunicaciones corporativas de Sony

Hoy se suponía que iba a ser el día del lanzamiento de la nueva consola de Sony Playstation 3, pero sólo ha salido en Japón. ¿Por qué?
- El problema ha sido no poder hacer suficientes lectores de los nuevos reproductores de DVD de nueva generación, el Blu-Ray.

Entonces, ¿es más una cuestión cuantitativa que técnica?
- No, la tecnología funciona y está demostrado, pero cuando estás a la vanguardia de la tecnología, es más complicada la producción en masa y nos ha costado más tiempo poder anticiparnos.

¿Por qué, según su opinión, merece la pena esperar a la PS3 en vez de comprarnos una XBOX 360 o una nintendo Wii?
- La Playstation 3 es un sistema de entretenimiento doméstico dotado con las últimas tecnologías, más que una simple máquina recreativa. El reproductor de Blu-Ray tiene mucha más capacidad, lo que permite juegos superiores.

¿Se van a llevar el gato al agua en esta batalla por la nueva generación de consolas?
- Sí, siempre decimos que la PS3 está diseñada para tener un amplio futuro. Permite disfrutar de videojuegos con 10 veces más de talla que los últimos que ya están en el mercado.

¿Y están preparados los juegos para la velocidad que permite la consola?
- Por supuesto que sí. Hay tantos desarrolladores que quieren utilizarla por los movimientos, texturas o inteligencia artificial... En los juegos de carreras, por ejemplo, tus competidores pueden pensar por si mismos, más que responder a un programa automático.

Además de la XBOX 360 la Nintendo Wii también estará en el mercado estas navidades, y mucho más barata...
- Pienso que se dirige a una audiencia más joven, una consola que podrías poner en el cuarto de los niños. La PS3 es para el salón.

Muy maja la entrevista, en la línea de prepotencia que siempre tienen todos sus directivos.

Que Wii y X360 son muy inferiores y no preocupan, y que PS3 es 10 veces mejor... (o que sus juegos serán 10 veces mejores que los actuales) tela.

PlayStation 3 HDTV Issue Discovered
If your HDTV can't receive a 720p signal, you may be out of luck when it comes to getting an HD signal from the PS3.

There are currently three key HDTV modes right now, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The PlayStation 3 outputs graphics at all of the above settings, however, not all HDTVs accept all of these signals or are capable of displaying all these modes. Some HDTVs, especially older models, are only capable of displaying 480i (standard definition), 480p (enhanced definition) and 1080i. Normally this isn't an issue, as HD receivers and cable boxes (and even the Xbox 360) can be set to output at the resolution that your TV supports. Unfortunately, it's been discovered that PS3s aren't so friendly to these older 1080i-only HDTVs. The problem lies in titles that output at 720p, such as Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 and Need for Speed Carbon.

According to a report on IGN, the problem lies in what the PS3 decides to do when it's playing a game that outputs in 720p on an HDTV that only does 1080i. Apparently, the PS3 doesn't scale the 720p image to 1080i, thus outputting an HD signal that the TV can't display. Instead, it downscales the signal to 480p, which is not HD. This issue comes both with the HDMI cable and component cables. Some HDTVs that only display 1080i have a built-in scaler to take a 720p signal and scale it up to 1080i, so if you own a set that does this, you'll be fine. It's all about what type of signal your TV will actually accept. So far it's not known if this is a software issue or something inherent in the PS3 hardware. We've sent a request to Sony for a comment, but so far haven't received a reply. We'll update you with more info as it comes in.

Phil Harrison no habla acerca de Killzone 2.

When the PlayStation 3 officially debuted at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo, there was one clip of video that had the gaming world buzzing: the PS3 Killzone trailer. Clocking in at less than two minutes of raw havoc as a group of soldiers on hovering dropships attempt to establish a foothold in enemy territory under heavy fire, the trailer eclipsed most of the actual games at the three-day show and touched off heated debates as to its authenticity.

Some accused Sony of pawning off prerendered cutscenes as the real deal, while Sony itself insisted that everything in the trailer was done in real time. That was just about the last thing Sony had to say on the game, as it was absent from E3 2006 and hasn't been shown publicly since. With the PS3 launching in Japan last weekend and North America this weekend, it appears Sony is ready to talk about Killzone once again.

In an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine and reprinted in part on the "semi-official" Sony blog Three Speech, Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison talked a bit about Killzone. Harrison said he wouldn't show the game until it's ready to exceed expectations, adding that it won't be seen until next year. He also acknowledged the high bar set for the game by the E3 preview, adding that "some elements already exceed the trailer."

Elsewhere in the interview, Harrison discussed the PS3's killer app, Sony's decision to abandon rumble feedback in controllers, and the company's European launch plans.

Lo que me faltaba por oír. Los que no lleguen a la HALF-HD (sí, la que tienen la mayoría de juegos actuales de PS3) que no se moleste en comprar la PS3 por que no irá con él el tema....

Las declaraciones de esta gente son alucinantes, yo empiezo a creer que realmente se creen lo que dicen, sinó no me explico que digan tales cosas y sean capaces de mantenerlas tanto tiempo...

Lo del Killzone 2... se esperarán a tener algo real como el GOW? Pero si lo que mostraban era real, porque no se sigue mostrando?

Findor creerselo no se lo creen ni ellos, pero cuando te pillan en un renuncio la unica salida es ponerle 2 cojones y mantener la misma postura aun mas firmemente si cabe.

Es una táctica muy efectiva. Tú dices una mentira y la repites con toda convicción cada vez que tienes oportunidad. Al final, la gente se queda con "me suena que dijeron que la PS3 es 10 veces más potente que la 360", por todas las veces que lo han oido.
