Permitidme un apunte más sobre "All You Need Is Love" que puede ser interesante. En 1967, el mensaje de la canción encajaba como un guante con el ambiente social y cultural. Sin embargo, John Lennon siempre ha señalado a una canción anterior como antecedente claro y boceto de la misma. Se trata de "The Word" (1965), la primera canción en que los Beatles hablaban del amor universal en vez del amor concreto chica-chico. Paul le ayudó a terminarla y los dos cantaron el estribillo en una elaborada armonía.

En aquel momento, 1965, la letra de "The Word" sí que se adelantaba a la corriente hippie y suponía un mensaje profético de por donde iba a ir la juventud en la segunda mitad de los 60. John intentó que la canción, por su significado, fuera single. Pero George Martin consideraba que "Day Tripper" y "We Can Work It Out" eran más adecuadas para ello, así que "The Word" se quedó en el álbum "Rubber Soul", que eso sí, fue número 1 a los dos lados del charco. Pero el mensaje ya estaba claro para los Beatles: la palabra clave era "Amor", en su sentido más amplio.
