That lucky bastard Tom Leupp, who covers all things LA for our site, was on the set of WAR OF THE WORLDS last night and go to chat with Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise. His full report is forthcoming at another date but he did drop me some interesting news regarding Cruise's involvement in the New Line adaptation of Marvel's IRON MAN. According to Tom, when asked about whether he was doing IRON MAN, Cruise replied: "It's not happening. Not with me, no." When asked why, he replied, "I don't know. It just...they came to me at a certain point and...when I do something, I wanna do it right. If I commit to something, it has to be done in a way that I know it's gonna be something special. And as it was lining up, it just didn't feel to me like it was gonna work. I need to be able to make decisions and make the film as great as it can be, and it just didn't go down that road that way." So there you have it folks. You can officially cross Tom Cruise's name off the IRON MAN rumor list. It would've been great had it worked out but I think I'm getting the same vibe from the production that he is so I'm not surprised he's moving on to better things. As of now, New Line has set Nick Cassavetes (THE NOTEBOOK) to direct the comic book flick. As I said before, stay tuned to JoBlo.com for more from the set of WAR OF THE WORLDS
