Ryan Gosling hablando sobre el proyecto:
"This film was, in a lot ways, a gift from the directors I’ve been working with over the last few years. I’ve gone between acting in films completely based in reality with Derek Cianfrance to the fevered dreams of Nicolas Winding Refn. I think I’ve vacillated between these two extremes because my own sensibilities as a filmmaker lay somewhere in-between.

It’s not until I had the opportunity to work on The Ides of March that I was introduced to Detroit, a place that is currently living on the border of those two realities. Although I was only there for a few days I couldn’t help but be affected by the city. It was on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. There were forty miles of abandoned neighborhoods and, within pockets of those neighborhoods, there were parents trying to raise their children on streets where houses were being burned and torn down around them. Detroit was the birthplace of the Model T, Motown and the middle class. It was, at one time, a postcard for the American Dream but now, for the families in these neighborhoods, the dream has become a nightmare. Having said that, there is still a lot of hope there. There is something very inspiring about the consciousness in Detroit. What it once was and will be again is still very much alive. I knew I had to make something there.

I kept returning over the following year, trying to document some of these neighborhoods before they were torn down or destroyed and I began to think of a story that took place not in Detroit, but in Lost River, an imagined city with an imagined past. As the elements of the story began to emerge; a family losing their home, a mysterious secret beneath the surface, I drew from the 80′s family fantasy films that I grew up with and filtered them through the sensibilities about film I’ve acquired since. With that, Lost River began to take shape for me in the form of a dark fairy tale with the city itself as the damsel in distress and the characters as broken pieces of a dream, trying to put themselves back together."

Me han parecido bastante interesantes estas declaraciones de Ryan Gosling, sobre todo lo que comenta de mezclar realidad y ficción y sobre sueños que se tornan pesadillas. habrá que ver qué se comenta de la película en Cannes.

Cuéntenos cómo surgió la idea de la película.
Al tratarse de mi primera película como director, quise comenzar por algo sencillo: contar una historia simple, como un cuento de hadas. Tuve la ocasión de trabajar en Detroit durante algunos días en otro película. Es una ciudad muy especial con una historia increíble y un futuro misterioso. Existen barrios abandonados que se extienden a lo largo de kilómetros, en los que viven familias y niños que crecen en calles donde las casas se han incendiado o han sido demolidas. Es surrealista y eso me hizo pensar en un cuento de hadas macabro y no solamente a causa de la destrucción. Así que decidí dirigir una película siguiendo ese mismo modelo, del sueño a la pesadilla, acerca de una familia que vive en una realidad que roza lo fantástico.

¿Tiene algún recuerdo especial o una anécdota del rodaje?
Detroit alberga el templo masónico más grande del mundo. Tiene miles de habitaciones, incluyendo tres salas de teatro, una de las cuales puede albergar hasta 5.000 personas, y tres salas de baile. También hay salas de recepción y una sala de ejercicios militares. El 90% de estas habitaciones permanecen prácticamente vacías durante todo el año. Es una proeza arquitectónica cuyo ambiente recuerda actualmente al de la película "El resplandor". Sin embargo, la dirección y el mantenimiento del templo corre a cargo de personas muy amables y hospitalarias. Fueron indispensables para nuestro proyecto, porque toda la producción de la película se realizaba en el templo. Todos nuestros despachos estaban allí: decoración, vestuarios, peluquería y maquillaje... También los actores tenían sus alojamientos allí mismo. La mitad de las escenas de interior se filmaron dentro del templo y algunos de nuestros despachos de producción también se hicieron un hueco en algunas escenas de la película. Lo auténticamente notable de todo esto es que aunque intenté utilizar al máximo el edificio, solo aparece una pequeña fracción de todo lo que tiene por ofrecer.

¿Podría hablarnos de su próximo proyecto?
Estoy escribiendo una comedia. De momento, no es muy divertida y estoy intentando poner remedio a eso.

¿Qué cine le influyó más?
El cine de los años 80 y el inicio de los 90 fue el que más me influyó. Desde el Videodrome de David Cronenberg al Halloween de John Carpenter. Las películas fantásticas, los dramas, las comedias y las películas de terror se entremezclaban. Compartí muchas referencias con mi compositor Johnny Jewel mientras realizábamos la banda sonora original de mi película y en un momento determinado me dijo: «Maldita sea, ¡¿qué fue lo que pasó entre 1988 y 1994?!».

Interesantes declaraciones de Gosling. Puede que aunque ha indicado que la historia es sencilla, esas referencias a Kubrick, Carpenter o Cronenberg hayan hecho que la película no sea tan sencilla finalmente y que se le haya escapado algo de las manos, vistas muchas de las reacciones críticas en Cannes.

Pero por otro lado, creo que será interesante ver qué ha intentado hacer Gosling, por lo meos parece que ha habido grandes dosis de originalidad y de riesgo.
