The Orlando Magic don't expect Fran Vazquez -- their first-round draft pick -- to play for them this season and realize the wait could be even longer. But that isn't stopping the Magic from trying to get to the bottom of Vazquez's stunning decision to remain in Spain.
Magic co-general manager Dave Twardzik was expected to leave for Spain on Monday to hopefully meet with Vazquez and his agent, Jose Cobelo, among others.
"We're upset," co-general manager Otis Smith said. "We got blindsided. Does it hurt? Yeah, it hurts. It makes us look like we didn't do our homework with this kid, and we did. We cross-checked everything two, three times.
"We couldn't have predicted this."
[...] On the trip to Spain, the Magic especially want to speak with Cobelo, who represents Vazquez in his homeland. When Vazquez and Cobelo came to Orlando the day after the draft, Vazquez enthusiastically expressed a desire to play in the NBA.
The Magic were aware that they had to buy out Vazquez's contract with Unicaja Malaga, but the Magic -- and Cobelo -- said they didn't expect any major problems.
But Vazquez said later from Spain that he wasn't sure if he was ready to play in the NBA or if he could adapt to life in America. He said he would play in Spain next season. Then last weekend, according to several European media outlets, Vazquez left Unicaja Malaga and cut a new four-year deal with Akasvayu Girona.
The Magic will retain the rights to Vazquez -- and can trade them if they wish. "I wouldn't say he'll never play here. I think at some point he will, but I can't tell you when that is," Smith said.
"We just want some face-to-face time with the kid. We'd like him in an Orlando Magic uniform. . . . If he wants to stay there for a year, we'll give him that flexibility. We care about him. We just want a sense of where he's at."
Smith said the club couldn't "substantiate" whether Vazquez, 23, had signed with another club. But Smith said he expects the Magic would be able to buy out Vazquez's contract with another team.
:atraco
