Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software recently made comments on Borderlands 3. While Borderlands 3 may not be in the cards for Gearbox at the moment, there are two unannounced IPs coming from the studio soon. Here is what one of those secret IPs might be.
Randy told Polygon the following.
Cita:
We created Borderlands. We acquired Duke Nukem. We acquired Homeworld. I’m building two original IPs for next-gen. I can’t personally invest myself wholly in all of these things. So I invest myself in one or two things, and empower talent and creativity around me and beside me and in this vicinity. I do whatever I can to fuel that and let awesome people do awesome things. I love that feeling.
When Randy was asked about the status of Brothers in Arms: Furious Four he stated the following.
Cita:
“I think it’s probably best, at this stage, to not even … to just assume that the idea of what Brothers in Arms: Furious Four was, that doesn’t exist,”
“We let the game evolve into something totally different. It’ll be a brand new IP. It’s become a whole new game, which we’ll announce when we’re ready.”
According to both of the previous statements, you now know that Gearbox is working on two brand new IPs for the current generation of consoles (sorry Randy we know what you meant, by next-gen). We also may know that one of the two new IPs may be the Brothers in Arms: Furious Four project. Randy has stated the project will be introduced as a brand new intellectual property, so this could be one of the new series he was referring to.
This finally brings us to IP number 2. What could it be? We think we have a clue, but first let’s take a trip back in time.
Remember 2010, such a great time in gaming, and it feels like it was just yesterday. Unfortunately a decent amount of time has passed and this little trademark from Gearbox has not been mentioned in a while. I am referring to Z-Day.
Back in 2010 many outlets posted about the mysterious Z-Day trademark and speculated on what it could be. Some speculated a comic series, while others expected some sort of Zombie game to be announced (unless the Z stands for Zebra and the game is about a day at the zoo). All in all, nothing came to fruition, but the trademark still remains active to this day.
The whole point of a trademark is to protect a name, and this was obviously a smart move by Gearbox, because assuming this is a zombie game, there are some video games that share closely similar names already like DayZ and ZDay.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the registered trademark does not expire until 2020, which gives Gearbox plenty of time to produce something relevant to Z-Day. It would be interesting to see Gearbox’s take on zombies assuming once again that this is a zombie game.
At the end of the day we can only speculate and pass this off as a rumor. It would be nice to see Z-Day come to life, because it has been a mystery for far too long.
