I went there and spent an hour or so looking at the demo and chatting with the reasonably knowledgeable reps. First of all the Sharp was fantastic. I do not see how anyone would not like that projector. But the JVC bested (is that a word?) the Sharp in a couple of areas. When the Sharp was in high contrast mode -which it should be for serious movie watching in a light controlled room- it was not as bright as the JVC. And at the same time the brighter JVC had better black levels (in the star scenes the black border of the screen was only a hair darker than the black sky- in other words really black.) And the contrast and shadow detail was a little bit better too.

The Sharp was actually brighter than the JVC when it was in its other-non high contrast modes. But the black levels and the contrast suffered. But brighter is not everything. When the projecors were competing in their best movie watching mode the JVC won and its about one half the price of the Sharp. So where do I sign?
