At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2007 in Las Vegas, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced that more than one million units of the PlayStation 3 have shipped in North America to retailers.

The company claims the console has been selling-out at retail outlets across North America since it was launched but so far we only get to see lot of PlayStation 3 in store shelves while the Wii is the only new console that is completely sold out.

Sony highlighted during the announcement that PS3 reached the one-million mark before its predecessors but for obvious reasons avoided to include the competition on that statement

With the 2006 holiday season firmly behind us, all "next-gen" consoles are out of the gate and running. Sony has announced that the company has shipped 1 million PlayStation 3 consoles and says that they are on track for their European launch in March. Now that the mad holiday rush is over, however, Sony's challenges are just now mounting.

Without a doubt, the PS3 launch was something to behold: news stories of insanely long lines, fatal shootings and occasional muggings made it clear that in the early days, getting a PS3 was darn near impossible. Many saw the PS3 as pure eBay gold. Reality has set in, however. Suddenly PS3 speculators can't unload their units on eBay for a profit. Gaming blogs have started joking that the PS3 excels at collecting dust on shelves. Has demand really died down that quickly? We decided to find out by checking stores in the Cincinnati and Boston metropolitan regions.

The results are unambiguous: the PlayStation 3 is in stock, almost everywhere. In Cincinnati, there were PS3s at multiple Wal-Marts, GameStops, and Circuit City stores. The numbers went from only one system at the first Wal-Mart store to 15 at the second; everyone else seemed to have under ten units, mixed between the 20GB and 60GB models. If you want to buy a PS3, it's simply a matter of going to the right store or ordering from Best Buy or Circuit City online, both of which have them in stock, ready to ship. The same can be said for the Xbox 360, which is also available everywhere we checked. The Wii, on the other hand, has been sold out everywhere, with vague rumors of another shipment in the next few days.

One retailer spoke to me on condition of anonymity, and broke down his version of the situation. "It's not that we've gotten more PS3s than Wiis, it's just that no one wants them. We've seen a few returned. We have four in the store right now," he said. He also told of people coming in with multiple systems and no receipts, looking for cash back after their eBay listings failed to gather attention. "If you told me that I would have PS3s to sell and that I won't be able to get enough Wiis back in October, I would have laughed at you," he went on. He also detailed a memo from a regional vice president telling managers to put up a hand-written note telling customers that the PS3 is in stock.

Without any clear numbers outside of the 1 million shipped in North America, it's hard to say if demand for the PS3 is cooling or if supply is simply catching up. Recall that it wasn't until spring was nearly here last year that Microsoft was able to meet the initial demand.

It's not the case that the PS3 isn't selling well, however. One store manager revealed that they have sold 24 of 28 launch units, and most others who would talk to us told similar tales. Sales are strong; they're simply not as strong as many expected and a few even hoped.

The rush for the PS3 is over, and now it's up to Sony to get the games and updates needed to put the PS3 back in the minds of gamers to move this inventory. This is a marathon, not a sprint, but the widespread availability has to be troubling to Sony. When the "sold out" stories quickly become "inventory stacked to the ceiling a month later" stories, shareholders may become somewhat unsettled by how strong the competition has become.

Lo que necesita Sony es ponerse las pilas en cuestión de juegos, la PSP se ha parado porque no sale absolutamente nada mencionable, mientras que la DS está sacando pocos, pero interesantes juegos.

Desde el lanzamiento de la PS3, al igual que con la PSP, no ha salido NADA, sólo cuatro juegos del bazar...así poco van a llamar la atención, porque por mucho centro integral del ocio, la gente se compra la PS3 para JUGAR, y si no hay juegos, pues no venderá...

Pues mirando las listas de próximos lanzamientos, poquita cosa interesante hay para los próximos meses. Y menos si ya los has jugado en PS2/PSP/X360, ya que alguno es multi que llega tarde por el lanzamiento.

Más les vale espabilar y no cagarlo como lo están haciendo con la pobre PSP.

Opino como vosotros, yo creo que el tema clave aquí es la falta de videojuegos...si la consola hubiera tenido de lanzamiento un Final Fantasy o un Metal Gear probablemente la cosa hubiera sido distinta. Pero sin juegos "vende-máquinas" en el catálogo es normal que pasado el boom inicial la cosa se haya estancado un poco...

Hoy había una presentación en madrid, ha ido un compañero de trabajo de mi wat y me comentó que si le daban algún dossier me lo pasaba, ya os contaré el finde....

PS3 no se agota en Estados Unidos

Está claro, aunque me repita más que el ajo, PS3 necesita un juego vendeconsolas YA...

El concepto de "centro integral del ocio" no funciona, está muy bien tener la PS3 en el comedor y tal, pero si vives "con familia", no queda muy bien cambiar de canal y ponerte a jugar...

Las consolas están en el comedor en casas de solteros o en habitaciones de frikis, estos lo usan para jugar...

No hay juegos, no hay consolas...

Pelanes ha dado un dato muy interesante, aparte de los juegos que menciona hay muchos más claro y es que al menos el 80% de los juegos que van a aparecer este año, YA están en Xbox360 o estarán antes y habiendo quedado demostrado que no muestran ninguna mejora respecto a esta versión, pues ya me contareis para que quiere alguien una Ps3.

No me extraña la noticia del GameStop la verdad y que tengan estanterías llenas de Ps3 sin vender, en cuanto los fans de Sony ya tienen ya suya queda el público de ir, ver y comparar y ante eso Wii o X360 le da un repaso de cuidao.

January 9, 2007 - Despite promises of a million systems at Japanese retail by the end of 2006, Japanese publisher Enterbrain reports today that Sony has managed to sell just 466,716 PS3 units to Japan. This figure covers the period from the Japanese launch on 11/11 to the end of the year.

In comparison, Enterbrain reports that Nintendo managed to sell 989,118 Wii units from the 12/2 launch to the end of the year, with the number quickly jumping over the million mark for a total of 1,135,671 units by 1/7.

The firm didn't provide 2006 results for the Xbox 360, but did list the system as having sold a total of 290,467 units from its 12/10/2005 launch to the end of 2006. In particular, spurred by the release of Blue Dragon, Microsoft managed to sell 99,798 360 units in December 2006 alone -- the highest month ever for the system (yes, that includes the launch).

Portable gaming has been Japan's big star over the past couple of years. Enterbrain reports total Japanese DS and DS Lite sales from 2004 until the end of 2006 as 13,950,000 units. The PSP, while nowhere near the DS, has managed a respectible 4,510,000 units since its launch.
In the case of the Wii, IGN has had trouble finding a system since launch, making today's reports of a million plus Wiis sold to Japanese consumers all the more impressive.

The PS3, on the other hand, has been readily available since the New Year began. We were able to find a used 60 gig unit today at a major retail for $50 less than the new selling price. This would suggest that the lack of sales is due to more than just supply constraints.

La verdad es que lo tiene jodido jodido... Eso de las cadenas de tiendas GameStop os puedo asegurar que hay miles y miles por todo el territorio americano (fijaros que en Hawaii, una isla relativamente pequeña, tiene 3 tiendas, una de ella es donde compré el HDVD y el viva piñata). Si todas esas tiendas estan con stock... o hacen lo que dice Findor de sacar un juegazo, o se veran perdidos como la PSP...

Play 3 Para Dar y Vender

The employees of that store and others report that while they’re still fielding a high number of Wii-related calls during each day, they can go an entire day without any inquiries at all about the PS3. One store showed me a scratch pad they kept by the phone one day, making marks for each Wii call and PS3 call they received. At the end of that day the Wii had gotten 75, while the PS3 came in at 2.

The other issue the store reported is the high number of returns on the Playstation 3. These customers, states my source, had in most cases purchased the consoles in the hopes of making a profit by reselling them online. A quick scan of Ebay, though, shows that this is no longer an option. The few PS3’s that are posted either have no bids at all, or are being sold for the retail price or even below (I saw one unopened 60gb unit with a Buy it Now price of $550, $50 below the retail price). So these people who had hoped to make some easy money are bringing back their purchases so they can at least break even.

One store that I talked to reported three consoles being returned in one day, while another said they had gotten four back over the course of the week after Christmas. These returns, in addition to the stock that is still being sent, adds up to a healthy stack of systems that the store says they just can’t move. They even remarked that they had more PS3’s in stock than they had Xbox 360’s.

De eso no hay duda, pero por algún motivo Sony está dejando de lado las consolas (por el BD?), la PS2 apenas saca juegos, la PSP tampoco, la PS3 tampoco (lo cual me hace pensar que a pesar del retraso el lanzamiento era precipitado aún)...

Recordemos que Sony hablaba de 4 millones de consolas para marzo...

Y el problema va a ser la desconfianza que esto provoque en otros compradores, porque la gente verá que la PS3 no vende (siendo el centro de ocio integral que cura el cancer y solucionará todos nuestros problemas...) y si no vende siendo todo eso "será por algo"...

Stock PS3/Wii

Como ya dije en otro hilo, PS3 tiene una deficiencia en juegos alarmante. Ésto, el día de salida se puede perdonar (pese a que los sonyers dijeran que el catálogo de salida de X360 era un full.... ejem), pero es que dos meses después, y con las miradas hasta junio, no hay nada que no sea el F1 o multiplataforma que llevan meses en PS2/PSP/X360.

Ya pueden espavilar con algún vende consolas: GT, FF, Metal... lo que sea.

Por que tener como competencia a Wii, que sin demasiados juegos está vendiendo la ostia, y X360 con juegos como GOW, Lost Planet, BLue Dragon....

Vaya cara se les habrá quedado a los que pagaron los primeros dias 2000$ o más en la reventa

“The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It’s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted. I’d say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a “do over”. Just say, “This was a horrible disaster and we’re sorry and we’re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it”. The happy story is the Wii. I’m betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I’m crazy. I really like everthing that Nintendo is doing. “

Joooder con PS3, cada vez peor... Hombre, la parte positiva de esto es que no tardará en bajar de precio...

Pues como los demás empiecen a dudar de la PS3 después de las declaraciones del tio de Valve, me veo pronto un MGS4 en 360...

Como se genere desconfianza me parece a mi que o la saldan recien salida (cosa que seguro que gusta a los que la compraron el primer día) o la cosa no pinta bien...
