Variety reports that Screen Gems will produce and release a remake of REC, the recently completed horror film from Spain's Filmax company. The ubiquitous Vertigo Entertainment will also be involved, and Filmax's Julio and Carlos Fernandez will serve as executive producers. Set to write and direct are John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, who won festival attention with their serial-killer mockumentary THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES, which MGM releases next February.
The original REC, helmed by Jaume (DARKNESS) Balagueró and Paco (WEREWOLF HUNTER) Plaza, follows a TV reporter and her cameraman who track a call for help to an apartment building, and discover a horrific situation inside; the Variety blurb gives away what they find, but we'll keep it a surprise for now. No domestic distribution has yet been secured for the first REC, but Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper tells the trade he's interested in reduxing other Filmax fright films. "Horror may be waning, but this is such a unique concept that I'm certain it will cut through all the blood and glut of recent horror in the marketplace," he says.
