Acuerdo Toshiba-Sony

"SEATTLE (Reuters) - Japan's
Sony Corp (SNE.N). (6758.T) and Toshiba Corp. (6502.T) are close to finalizing a plan to develop a common standard for next-generation DVDs to resolve a three-year-long battle over formats that threatened the industry's growth, a Japanese newspaper reported on Monday.

A detailed plan could be unveiled ahead of a key meeting of manufacturers involved in the manufacture of next-generation DVDs scheduled for May 16, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said.

Sony, along with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (6752.T), maker of Panasonic brand products, had been pushing for the standard it calls Blu-ray, while Toshiba, with NEC Corp. (6701.T) and Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. (6764.T), has been promoting a technology called HD DVD.

Both sides have indicated that a new, unified format will use Sony's technology for recording information onto an optical disk while Toshiba will supply software that will handle efficient data transfer and copyright protection."

Sip, pero hace apenas dos meses a ver quién se creía este final feliza para la HD.

Estoy encantado porque esto acelerará bastante la penetración de la HD en Europa, que me temo que, al contrario que en Japón y EEUU, será el blu-ray quien arrastre a las TV's y no al revés.

Yo soy más escéptico, pa mi que esto aun no ha acabado, ojalá si, pero "va ser que no". Tiempo al tiempo señores.

Aun así esta noticia no deja de ser una aproximación muy seria a algo que empieza a oler bien, pero repito, paciencia que aun nos queda mucho que oler, pero muchooo.

No creo que demasiado. La tecnología ya la tienen desarrollada. Por más que traten ahora de vestir el santo, no van a desarrollar (casi) nada nuevo que antes no tuvieran.

Por otro lado, el HD-DVD esperaba empezar a comercializar sus primeros lectores para el último cuarto de este año, con lo que no veo por qué deberían seguir retrasándose más.

La noticia que posteaba creo, que si bien no es definitiva, salvo catástrofe deja bien claras las intenciones de las empresas involucradas. Y resueltos los flecos, lo único que les importa es el "time to market" para empezar a amortizar las inversiones realizadas en I+D. Que empiecen las distribuidoras a producir material HD y a cobrar royalties por cada disco vendido.

Otro tema es cuando entrará con fuerza en Europa, pero EEUU y Japón si son mercados maduros como para recibir con los brazos abiertos estos nuevos lectores.

Sony and Toshiba, heading rival groups, have waged a three-year war to have their new technology standards adopted by the industry and gain pole position in the multi-billion-dollar markets for DVD players, PC drives and optical discs.

But the companies said last month they were in talks to develop a common standard, in a move to avoid VHS/Betamax-like dual formats that could discourage consumers from shifting to advanced discs and stifle the industry's growth.

Sony's Blu-ray technology is backed by a group including Dell Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Philips Electronics NV and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., maker of Panasonic products.

The source said a unified format based on Blu-ray's disc structure was being discussed in the talks, held between Sony, Toshiba and Matsushita.

He added, however, it was unclear whether and when the two sides would reach a final agreement on a common format.

The Nihon Keizai newspaper said earlier that Sony and Toshiba were in final talks eyeing a new format based on Blu-ray's disc structure and Toshiba's software for efficient data transfer and copyright protection.

In Blu-ray, a layer to hold data is put on the surface of a substrate and covered by thin protective layers, while in HD DVD discs, which are supported by Toshiba, a memory layer is sandwiched between two substrates.

The two sides agree that it would be best for consumers to have a common format, but shifting to a rival standard could mean a delay in product development and the commercial launch, making unification difficult.

Toshiba, which supports HD DVD technology along with NEC Corp. and Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd., said in a statement nothing had been decided on the unified format.

At the core of both formats are blue lasers, which have a shorter wavelength than the red lasers used in current DVD equipment, allowing discs to store data at the higher densities needed for high-definition movies and television.

Member companies in the Blu-ray camp are set to meet in Tokyo next week to discuss technological and promotional matters.

Shares in Sony were down 0.74 percent at 4,000 yen in afternoon trade, while Toshiba fell 1.1 percent to 448 yen. Both underperformed the Tokyo stock market's electric machinery index, which was down 0.22 percent.

The announcement could give Toshiba a boost in ongoing talks with Blu-ray Disc-supporters Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic) regarding a single, unified high-definition video disc standard.

The talks began earlier this year and are aimed at heading off what many expect will be a damaging format battle that will harm both consumers and the consumer electronics and entertainment industries.

The current state of the talks is unknown. However, a report in the Tuesday morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily said an agreement between the two sides could come as soon as next week. It reported that Toshiba, Sony and Panasonic are discussing using Toshiba’s software technology and the Blu-ray Disc structure, the latter because of its greater storage capacity.

Toshiba reacted fast to the report and said “absolutely no decision has been made for unification on any basis” and called the report’s claims “unfounded and erroneous.”

Whatever the eventual outcome of the talks, time is running out for both sides.

The HD-DVD group said in January that it plans to have players and content available in U.S. stores in the last quarter of this year, and the first machine to support prerecorded Blu-ray Disc is expected to be announced next week, when Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. shows off a prototype of its next-generation PlayStation 3. The console and other Blu-ray Disc players aren’t expected to be commercially available until 2006.<hr></blockquote>

Yo estoy decidido. El año que viene me compro la PS3 y a correr.

El que quiera HD en sus inicios, tal y como de momento está el tema, más le valdría adquirir una Play3. Al menos, de esta forma, si el BRay no se convirtira en el formato standar, al menos te queda una "estación de juegos".
