Predeterminado Tucker: Un Hombre y su Sueño (Tucker: A Man and his Dream, Francis Ford Coppola, 1988)

What makes Megalopolis so strange and, for a big-budget Hollywood film, so singular, is that, just like Vergil’s Aeneid, it is at once accretive, allusive, and idiosyncratic because Coppola is attempting something very few artists have ever done: to speak from inside the imperial organism, even as it begins to crack, and to craft a vision that is both a monument to its grandeur and a requiem for its decline.

Pathe's recent release of Tucker The Man and His Dream could be a lesson to any number of filmmakers and studios that insist on tinkering with otherwise fine film scans. No Dolby Vision, no HDR at all, BT.709 color space rather than BT.2020, yet this is among the most appealing transfers I have had the pleasure of lighting up on the 98" TCL screen.

Gorgeous color palette, near perfect contrast and black level without a hint of blooming whites or crushed blacks. Zoetrope's work here is beautifully filmic with a naturally stable grain structure. I might even compare this to a really good blu-ray but on steroids. The expanded resolution adds that extra level of detail, clarity and stability that puts this transfer among the best I have seen.

There are two English soundtrack options, 2.0 (original?) and a 5.1 remix. While not overly flashy, the soundtrack offers a well-balanced soundfield with very good range offering clear, detailed dialog with good low frequency support where necessary. This was watched in 5.1.

Generally, the disc is "English-friendly" excepting forced French subtitles which is common on French releases. Those that transfer their discs to a server will have the software to deal with this single issue.

Tucker is a Lucasfilm production. Although the previous US Blu-ray was released by Lionsgate, Lucasfilm has since become part of Disney. That does not bode well for a US 4K disc release. One can hope...or import this gorgeous French release.
