I just read the script, and these are just my thoughts based on my reading experience. I don't know if anyone is interested in reading this, but I'll just say that I won't spoil anything for those who are.
Only God Forgives is an intense, engrossing and bleak script. There are elements from Drive, Bronson and even his early Pusher films, and Nicholas Winding Refn's love of movies (all genres) shine through in what will possibly become his "violence masterpiece". Visually, there are a lot of scenes that show potential to be mesmerizing. A certain montage with a Dolly Parton-karaoke soundtrack is going to be talked about. A lot.
There are very few characters that are simply black and white; Julian and Chang (his opponent) are both bad people. They are vicious and lost souls in the jungle that is Bangkok, but we grow to care for them both, in a weird way that the script deserves praise for. At the same time, the movie follows a familiar structure, and lacks the punch Drive's narrative... but the substance within the structure fully makes up for it.
I don't know what the world will think of this movie, but I do know that it needs to be made.
