The Superman movie looks to heading passed the $130 million mark by the end of the weekend, which is definitely beyond the studio's expectations.

SUNDAY AM, 9TH UPDATE: Warner Bros’ and Legendary Pictures’ Man Of Steel (4,207 theaters with 3D in 3,357 venues) grossed $44M in North America on Friday (including the $9M from midnights) and -18% for $36.3M Saturday (excluding those $12M from Thursday 7 PM Wal-Mart shows). Pic was light on all-time records. But, even with a longish running time of two hours and 23 minutes, the Chris Nolan-Zack Snyder-David S. Goyer-Henry Cavill PG-13 tentpole set a new June best-ever opening weekend record. It was the 2nd best debut of 2013 behind only Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man 3 (which is on the verge of crossing $400M domestic). Internationally, Warner Bros says Man Of Steel ranked #1 everywhere with a gross of $71.6M from 9,710 screens in the 24 overseas markets in release. That made for a speeding worldwide cume of $196.7M in its first 4 days.
In North America,
“Man Of Steel beat all expectations,” a Warner Bros executive tells me. “Interesting note that Superman’s Saturday gross is double the next ranking Top 4 films added together. That’s really dominating the marketplace.” Sunday is projected at $32.7M. Estimates now for the 3-day weekend are $113M and the 4-day opening cume is $125.1M including Thursday. As for Sunday, “always an upside to consider with a huge Father’s Day result,” Warner Bros President, Domestic Distribution, Dan Fellman tells me. Saturday’s number followed very strong matinees – the same as opening day at $15.5M. Sunday also will bring an updated international figure which currently stands at $25.9M. Playing on 331 domestic IMAX screens, Man Of Steel delivered $13.3M, a record opening for a June release and was 12% of the weekend take. “Our CinemaScore of ‘A-’ with the youngest (under 18) and the oldest (over 50) age categories both rating the film an ‘A’ should certainly generate strong word of mouth as we continue our run in the heart of the lucrative summer play time,” Fellman noted. The 3D screens generated 42% of Man Of Steel‘s box office revenue and 32% of all admissions for 6.250M for Friday. The Man Of Steel results helped total moviegoing this Friday increase +78% over last year’s box office. Pic packed a strong opening punch because of the 3D premium and immense wannasee sparked by masterful marketing. It took Nolan’s involvement to make Superman cool again (finally).
Internationally, Man Of Steel took 12.2M admissions. Key markets that opened this weekend were the UK, Korea, and Mexico. The UK pulled in £11M ($17.1M) from 574 situations, dominating the market with a 75% share of the Top 5 and ranking as the biggest opening day in 2013 – +11% bigger even than Iron Man 3. But the pic just narrowly missed beating IM3 for the weekend. Mexico grossed an estimated Ps. 126M ($9.8M) from 2,600 screens, and garnered a 70% share of the market. Its opening weekend ranked as the 3rd biggest for a WB film. Korea opened to hefty KRW 9.9M ($8.8M) from 990 screens taking 72% of the Seoul Top 5. Other notable cumes are The Philippines $5.6M which was 3rd biggest all-time industry opening despite monsoon conditions), India $3.5M, Taiwan $1.5M (had biggest WB opening day ever), UAE $2.0M, Malaysia $3.0M. Pic still has 27 more markets opening next weekend, including the major countries France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia and China. Australia opens on June 27, Brazil July 12, and Japan August 30.
Meanwhile, counter-programming the Man Of Steel juggernaut this weekend was Sony/Columbia Pictures’ raunchy apocalyptic comedy This Is The End (3,055 theaters). It received a ‘B+’ CinemaScore from audiences and 82% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and a #1 reception Wednesday. With a dearth of both ‘R’-rated movies or well-received laughers in the marketplace, pic made $6.8M on Friday and $7.4M on Saturday for a projected $20.5M for the 3-day weekend, and $32.8M for the 5-day cume – about what it cost. Exits show the opening drew audiences that were 60% male and 48% under age 25.Read more here.

113 millones es un OW que, por esperado, no deja de resultar espectacular. Las expectativas estaban muy altas y las ha cumplido. Otra prueba más de que el género de superheroes es la niña bonita de Hollywood en este siglo. Yo la veo acabando en 310-315. Puede hacerlo mejor pero también un poco peor. En el extranjero también ha debutado muy bien. Los 800 globales son una opción.
Buena entrada de This is the end, comedia donde se reunen todos los chicos de la factoría Apatow, interpretándose la mayoría a si mismos. Estreno un poco peor que el de Pineapple Express y Tropic Thunder, pero acabará en unos notables 75 millones.

Parai la taquilla es excelente teniendo en cuenta el momento delucadisimo en el que se encuentra el personaje en los comics y que parecia que la gente estaba hastiada del personaje y el fracaso de la pelicula anterior .

Parece que el Domingo será mejor de lo estimado para Man of Steel, por lo que esos 113 millones pueden acabar en 116 más o menos...

Por recordar, Man of Steel tendrá como competencia 2 grandes estrenos por semana durante un mes. El próximo finde llega Monsters University/World War Z, luego White House Down/The Heat, el independence weekend abre con Despicable Me 2 y The Lone Ranger y el siguiente es Pacific Rim/Grown Ups 2.
Más tarde llegarán multitud de estrenos de acción como R.I.P.D, Red 2, The Wolverine, 2 Guns, Elysium, etc...
Por esto no contemplo un múltiplo elevado de esos 113 millones de OW. Si sigue el de X-Men First Class, también estrenada en Junio de hace 2 años, acabaría con unos 320. Espero un pelín menos debido a la competencia.

De todos modos, el estreno es bastante mejor de lo esperado. Los famosos 12 millones de Wal-Mart no entran en la cifra de fin de semana por ser las proyecciones en la tarde del jueves, pero creo que se puede asumir que alguien que hace cola a las 8 de la mañana en un Wal-mart un mes antes, habría ido de todas formas a ver la peli en el primer fin de semana.

Yo diría que el estreno ha sido tal y como se esperaba casi todo Hollywood. Casi todo el mundo la tenía haciendo ciento y poco. Para que te hagas una idea, incluso aquí en la gili-porra que hemos hecho la cifra media de las 8 predicciones es de 120 millones. Ha hecho 113, muy cerca de la media.

Sí, pero si lees el post, lo decía porque yo los 12 millones del jueves los incluyo en la apertura. Para mí, es gente que quería verla cuanto antes y habría ido igualmente el fin de semana.

Man of Steel ha debutado con 116.6 millones. El 15º mejor estreno de la historia, sin ajustar por supuesto. También ha dejado el 6º mejor Domingo de la historia. Gran resultado.

Buen descenso, 65%. Yo esperaba un 55-60%, pero el Domingo estuvo super inflado por lo que todo tiene sentido. Veremos que tal va cayendo a lo largo de la semana y, sobretodo, que descenso tiene frente a Monsters University y World War Z el próximo finde.

Qué descenso crees que tendrá este finde? Teniendo en cuenta la alta cantidad de midnights que tuvo, el Domingo infladísimo y la dura competencia yo creo que caerá un 60% para quedarse con 45-50 millones. Ojo, parece un descenso grande, pero este tipo de blockbusters en estas fechas se comportan así, a no ser que seas un The Dark Knight o The Avengers. Un 60% no sería especialmente malo, yo incluso creo que es la cifra que hubiera descendido The Avengers si se enfrentará a la competencia que tiene Man of Steel.

Como bien dices la competencia es tremenda. Sin embargo Monsters tiene otro target, por lo que su competencia es relativa, por lo que realmente el enfrentamiento es con World War Z. El reto es ver si llega a los 50 millones (-57%). El lunes ha sido muy bueno porque, aunque ya sean días de verano, que son más altos que el resto del año, como ya has dicho, venimos de un domingo anormalmente alto, por lo que me parece un buen descenso. Voy a ser optimista y digo eso, 50 kilos.
