The Punisher 2

News and Rumors:

July 11, 2005: Sci Fi Wire talked to Punisher star Thomas Jane who says he's preparing for the second film: Thomas Jane, star of 2004's comic-inspired The Punisher, told SCI FI Wire that he's been working out to prepare for the sequel, which begins filming sometime before the end of the year. Jane will again play outlaw vigilante Frank Castle, he said in an interview. "I've been in the gym for seven weeks now," Jane said. "I've already put on 12 pounds of muscle. They want to start going before the end of the year. Ideally I'd like to see the film come out in the fall of 2006, but I don't have any control over that."

June 22, 2005: Marvel CEO Avi Arad updates on Iron Man: "As for a sequel to 2004's "The Punisher," Arad confirms that Jigsaw will be the villain and that, with the first movie, "blood and intestines should have been blown out on the wall, because that's the Punisher." He added that the sequel will be among a handful of Marvel films with an R rating. "

February 13, 2005: A scooper for Ain't-It-Cool-News attended the Dallas Comic Con Convention this weekend, where Thomas Jane revealed some new details on The Punisher 2. The moderator asked Thomas Jane about there being rumors of a possible Punisher 2. Thomas' respone was....."Oh, is that still just a rumor?" We all perked up, Niles asked Jane if he could talk about this, and Thomas said "Why Not." Jane let the cat out of the bag and told the room that yesterday at a studio in north Dallas (he dropped the name, but I don't remember it), they filmed the teaser for Punisher 2. Tom O'Brien, the cover art model of Frank Castle for the Punisher comics who was also at the Con, was also at the shoot yesterday in full costume. Jane said that on his phone, he owns the only picture of himself and the "real" Punisher, both in full costume, standing next to each other. No word on when or where we will see this trailer though. Jane said that while the script is not finished, he is working closely with the team. He said that he is doing EVERYTHING he can do to get the setting moved to the borroughs of New York and that Jigsaw is "more than likely" going to be the villian in the movie. -Thanks to 'Superherohype' for the heads up!

November 24, 2004: Thomas Jane tells Comic Book Resources that Lions Gate is currently budgeting The Punisher sequel: "They're really hot on the sequel since the DVD has sold so well," said Jane. "They're in the process right now of budgeting a sequel. We should have it in the next two weeks, sort of a preliminary budget, and then we'll start talking story, then writer and then we'll get going. I'll be involved in the story development. I probably won't be credited as such, but I'll definitely have input as to what I want to do." Thanks to 'Superherohype' for the news.

August 5, 2004: Thomas Jane spoke to About.com about the possiblity of a Punisher sequel: "There's a pretty good storyline in Circle of Blood," Jane said. "I like taking storylines from the comics and running them together. It would be great if Circle of Blood was one of them. And again, there's some pretty good stuff from the War Journal stuff. I'm hoping that number two is called The Punisher War Zone. Like we could do The Punisher: Circle of Blood or The Punisher War Zone. I think that'd be fun."

July 30, 2004: Superherohype.com recently spoke to Thomas Jane regarding The Punisher sequel: "We want Jigsaw to be the bad guy," he told us, "We'll probably shoot it for much the same budget and probably go to Australia or South Africa where we can stretch the dollar. I'd do another one. It's a niche market film that will always be that, and that's what it should be. He told us a bit about how extreme the second movie may be. "The first one ended with him busting into that club and taking out all those people, and the second will open where the first one left off. It will just be incredibly violent and then it will just get more and more violent as the film goes on. That's the kind of film that it should be! It's a real take no prisoners punk rock kind of an action film, and g**ammit, it should piss a lot of people off!" Click here for the full interview. Thanks to 'the rizor' and 'gus' for the heads up.

June 25, 2004: MovieHole is reporting the following: "The returns have been pretty disappointing. Tom Jane has won raves, so he's going to come out of it all alright and word is, he's already in talks to play another comic book-esque character, but he probably won't be doing the sequel to this. It was supposed to be full-speed ahead on chapter two, but the studio realizes it's not going to make any money so have erased it from the future flatplan. Too much money at stake". A sequel might happen one day, says the scooper, but most likely without Jane and probably as a straight to video title." - Take this with a grain a salt as nothing has been confirmed or denied.

May 4, 2004: Marvel CEO Avi Arad said that The Punisher will be released internationally starting in September. They are hoping to have The Punisher 2 ready by next fall. Thomas Jane is signed for three films and Jonathan Hensleigh will be back to write and direct as well.

April 21, 2004: The producers of "The Punisher" are interested in doing another film here [Tampa Bay], and there may be a "Punisher" sequel. Emerald also said the movie brought in $20 million to the Tampa economy. The crew, which filmed here for 11 weeks, also accounted for 5,000 "room nights" at area hotels and filmed in 50 different locations. "It was a good experience for everyone," Emerald said. "This is something this area can use to leverage more films being done here." Thanks to Superherohype.com for the news.

April 15, 2004: USA Today confirmed in a chat with Thomas Jane at the premiere of "The Punisher" which villain they will go with for the sequel - Jigsaw. Jane describes him as "He's this rageful guy who had his face horribly mutilated by The Punisher. He's all stitched up back together, but his whole shredded, scarred body looks like a jigsaw". Jane is signed for two further sequels. Thanks to DarkHorizons.com for the heads up!

March 8, 2004: IGN FilmForce just published an interview with Jonathan Hensleigh, writer/director of "The Punisher", and sequel talk is already underway it seems: "I definitely want to do that. Thomas Jane and I have a pledge to work together. I love him. I think that he is a new kind of American cinema actor that hasn't been around for 20-30 years. He's a sort of a throwback...Thomas and I are taking meetings together on a number of projects, but there's one in specific that we're trying to get going". Thanks to DarkHorizons.com

March 2, 2004: Variety reports that Lions Gate Entertainment has inked a deal with Marvel Enterprises to produce three Marvel movies: Iron Fist, Black Widow, and the sequel to The Punisher. No release dates have been set yet for the films. More news to follow!
