Harris:
I did not want my review to inhibit either sales or anyone without a critical knowledge of what they might be seeing, damaging their viewing experience, based upon my own extremely deep and in the weeds feelings of what has occurred.
I doubt that more than half a dozen readers here understand what they’re seeing, especially as the final result can be construed as pleasing or pretty. Which means that many people will fully enjoy what they’re seeing and be unaffected by the problems. And there’s nothing wrong there.
I’m not here to tell anyone what they should like - or not.
I am beginning to think, however, that this venture may have gone very astray, and possibly run amuck based upon the exigencies of Covid.
And I’m expressing that because of two attributes.
1. It was always the spoken and directed intent of this work to scrupulously follow the 2007 data files as expressed by the 2007 4k DCP as per color, densities, black levels, and control of highlights.
This has not occurred, and could at least slightly be the fault of the use of HDR.
2. There have been (from all that I’m aware) strict orders not to affect grain, except in equalizing the appearance of dupes.
From what I’m seeing (in 1 and 2) grain has been fully removed and replaced by noise, except possibly in one shot.
What I do not want, is for Total Grain Replacement (forever after “TGR”) to become an industry standard in order to cut costs.
That‘s fair. Surely.
