There has been discussion about how much benefit the UHD format would be for a relatively low res source such as Kerry Conran's grand experiment in digital filmmaking. In my opinion, after some extended sampling of this new 4K edition of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, utilization of the UHD format is well-founded.
This disc is a very obvious example of the basic limitations of the Blu-ray format that don't limit UHD. The real star of this show is Dolby Vision, but also the improved color and black level capability of of the UHD format. Resolution is not all UHD has to offer, and the benefits are certainly on display here. Color density and delineation are much improved over the older Blu-ray. Black level is equally improved with excellent contrast helping the limited resolution of the digital images. The live action closeups of actors is gorgeous (like Gwyneth Paltrow). Looking at this transfer overall, I get the feeling everything that the source material is capable of is on the screen. Yes, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow has never looked this good.
Audio is legacy DTS-HD MA 5.1 that plays well with height channel processing. A 2.0 track is also included.
Highly recommended this disc be viewed in Dolby Vision. Fans of this film will be highly rewarded.
