Guillermo del Toro está de jurado, pero en una de las secciones para lelas![]()
Ah no, no es una sección paralela, se trata de un jurado que se encarga de dar el premio a la mejor ópera prima del festival (como la cámara de oro de Cannes):
Stefania Rocca, Guillermo Del Toro, and Mohsen Makhmalbaf in the jury of the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Prize
The Italian actress, Stefania Rocca (in the cast, last year in Venice, of Mary and La bestia nel cuore), Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro (director of cult fantasy films such as Cronos, El espinazo del diablo, Hellboy, and competing at the moment at Cannes with El laberinto del fauno), and the Iranian master, Mohsen Makhmalbaf (a leading figure in the new cinema of his country, as Kandahar proves) are the international cinema personalities who have joined the jury of the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Prize for a first film at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival (30th August – 9th September 2006), organised by the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Davide Croff, and directed for the third time by Marco Müller.
The jury of the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Prize will include five members and, as announced a few days ago, will be chaired by the American producer, Paula Wagner, who has produced many of the major titles emerging from the American film industry over the past 15 years, many of them in association with Tom Cruise.
The prize is destined for the best first work of the feature films screening in the various sections of the 63rd Festival. The jury will award the winning film with the Lion of the Future - “Luigi De Laurentiis” Prize, and Euros 100,000 made available by Filmauro, to be divided equally between the director and the producer. The director will also be given 20,000 metres of stock offered by Kodak. Over the years, the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Prize has noted young talent such as Giovanni Davide Maderna, Abdel Kechiche, Jan Kvitkovič, Spiro Scimone and Francesco Sframeli, Dylan Kidd, Andrei Zvjagintsev, Ismaël Ferroukhi, and Gela Babluani.
The 63rd Venice Film Festival will include 3 main sections: films in Competition, which will award the Golden Lion for best film; films Out of Competition, a section devoted to important works by directors already established in past editions of the Festival; and Orizzonti, a section aiming to provide a picture of new trends in cinema. The jury of the Orizzonti section, which will award the Orizzonti Prize and the Orizzonti Doc Prize, will be presided over by Philip Gröning, the director of the highly acclaimed documentary Die große Stille (Into Great Silence), that screened in Venice last year.
David Lynch, Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement
The Board of Directors of La Biennale di Venezia, presided by Davide Croff, has accepted the proposal by Director Marco Müller to award the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to US director David Lynch at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival, scheduled to take place on the Lido di Venezia from August 30th through September 9th 2006.
The award will be presented to the director on September 6th, in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema, on the occasion of the screening of his new masterpiece INLAND EMPIRE.
David Lynch (United States), Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. With his visionary and disturbing style, he is one of the directors who has most strongly influenced our contemporary imagination, developing his coherent artistic career at the borders of the Hollywood industry, and fascinating the wider public with his experimentalism. He is considered the father of independent new film-making in the United States, having paved the way for authors such as the Coen brothers, Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, and outside the US, among others, Jane Campion. Lynch’s great admirers include Stanley Kubrick and Bernardo Bertolucci. Kubrick owned a copy of Eraserhead, the film that revealed Lynch to international critics in 1977, and used to project it periodically in his house in England, stating that Eraserhead was the only film directed by others that he wished he had directed himself. Bertolucci, president of the Jury at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, whom many consider to have inspired the verdict awarding the Palme d’Or to Wild at Heart, underlines how Lynch’s film was “extraordinarily” powerful.
The visionary nature of Lynch’s cinema, and the originality of his point of view, have been the focus of many critical essays around the world. He has a fascination for what cannot normally be seen, for mysterious beauty, the one that appears in strange places, and sometimes turns into horror. It has been said that in his films, he looks at the world like at a giant Rorschach inkblot (as used in the famous test), which reveal an infinity of butterflies or skulls, or secret faces. “The Frank Capra of dream logic”, he was defined by the great critic Pauline Kael. One of his principal stylistic traits is to amplify otherwise common elements in the construction of his films: darkness, for example, or sound, or again stillness. All normal elements in a film, which Lynch however uses in an unusual manner, dilating the moments of total darkness, making the sound excessive in some shots, lingering disturbingly over absolute stillness. French critic Michel Chion has written that Lynch knows how to “film like no other the apparent opposite of film, represented by stillness.” The power of his vision attacks the standards of taste, takes the reassurance out of conventions, instills doubts that are hard to remove. His importance lies in having said something new at a time when the movie industry seeks conformity and the absence of risk.
dice "his new masterpiece".![]()

The Black Dahlia by Brian De Palma to be the opening film at the 63rd Venice Film Festival
The Black Dahlia, the eagerly-awaited film directed by Brian De Palma, starring Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank and Josh Hartnett - and adapted from the famous novel of the same name by James Ellroy, inspired by a crime in 1940s Los Angeles - will be the opening film at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival. It will be presented in competition as a world premiere on the evening of 30th August 2006 in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema. The 63rd Venice Film Festival will run at Lido di Venezia from 30th August to 9th September 2006, and is for the third year directed by Marco Müller, and organised by the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Davide Croff. The Black Dahlia, produced by Art Linson, Rudy Cohen, Moshe Diamant and Avi Lerner, will be released in Italy at the end of October and distributed by 01 Distribution.
“We are honoured”, declared President Davide Croff and Director Marco Müller, “that Brian De Palma has chosen to open the 63rd Venice Film Festival with his new and long-awaited thriller, thus confirming his strong links with Venice. He was invited here in 1975 with one of his first films, Sisters, and in September, De Palma will appear on the parade in front of the Palazzo del Cinema for the fifth time. In the intervening years, he has presented Blow Out , Raising Cain, and one of his greatest masterpieces, The Untouchables. We are also happy that the Festival, thanks to this film, will once again be able to welcome two great stars from today’s film industry, both of whom first made a name for themselves in Venice: Scarlett Johansson, with Lost in Translation, and a jury member in 2004, and Hilary Swank, who was in Venice in 1999 with the film that won her her first Oscar, Boy’s Don’t Cry. The Festival will also welcome back Dante Ferretti, who has produced the period sets for The Black Dahlia, and confirms his position as most sought-after production designer by Hollywood’s directors”.
The Black Dahlia, adapted from the novel of the same name – the first of a quadrilogy on Los Angeles that revealed the talents of James Ellroy as a crime writer (L.A. Confidential) – is set in 1947 and sees two policemen as protagonists. Friends and former boxers, Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett) and Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) are in love with the same woman, the mysterious Kay Lake (Scarlett Johansson), former friend of a gangster. However, it is a terrible crime that the two are called on to investigate that changes their lives for ever: the murder of Elizabeth Short (Mia Kirshner), a girl with ambitions to be an actress, known as the Black Dahlia, who is found brutally murdered on the hillsides of Hollywood. During the course of the investigations, Bucky meets Madeleine Sprague (double Oscar-winner Hilary Swank) and begins a passionate relationship with her, although realising that she is indirectly involved in the crime, and that corruption and conspiracies dominate his police department. When his friend and colleague, Lee, suddenly disappears, for Bucky the investigation turns into a morbid obsession.
