Sony Number Two in Japan
For one week, at least.
by Anoop Gantayat
November 13, 2006 - Weekend numbers are in for the PlayStation 3's Japanese debut, and they aren't pretty. Enterbrain, the publisher of Japan's Weekly Famitsu magazine, reports today that Sony managed to sell 88,400 PlayStation 3 units over the system's first two days. This number breaks down to 33,800 20GB models and 54,600 60GB models.
If you think those hardware numbers are low then check out these software figures: the best selling game over the period was Bandai Namco's Ridge Racer 7, which sold 30,300 copies. This was followed by Gundam Crossfire at 30,000 units and Resistance, at 15,700 units. Figures for Genji and SEGA Golf Club, the two other launch titles, were not provided.
Enterbrain reports a software-hardware tie ratio of 0.98, meaning less than one game purchased for every PS3 sold.
These numbers sound eerily similar to the Xbox 360's launch last year. In its first two days, the 360 managed sales of 62,135 hardware units, Enterbrain reported in the days following the launch. The biggest selling game then was Ridge Racer 6, with 29,891 units, followed by Perfect Dark Zero, at 14,897 units.
Of course, the PS3 was, for all intents and purposes, sold out within hours of launch, while Microsoft filled Japanese shops with 100,000 additional 360 units, which have only recently gotten around to selling. The 360 is, technically, the number one next-generation system in Japan at this point, but that will likely change once Sony gets another shipment out. Something that we expect will happen some time in 2007.

More Than Meets The Eye: PS3's Multimedia Abilities
It's not a Transformer, but still, the PS3 is capable of doing way more than playing video games. But no, in spite of its design, it still can't grill waffles or burgers.

Sony's always been a company that obsesses about product integration almost as much as proprietary formats. Looks like PSP owners are finally gonna get a little something, unless they're still hanging onto the homebrew thing. Turns out that the answer I gave about whether or not the PSP would be a glorified Dreamcast VMU was partially wrong. It turns out that the PSP is, in fact a $250 VMU. That statement alone is a separate editorial about why the PSP needs a price drop. The 3.0 upgrade could have the same effect on PSP homebrewers that Halo 2 had on a lot of my Xbox-modding friends two years ago: it could force them to buy another system in order to keep a lot of their features. Or, without a price drop, maybe not.
I'd speculated a few weeks ago that the PS3 might find some way to transfer files, and thought that using the PS2 memory cards might be a long shot, but it could work with the Memory Card Reader. Now that I know that Sony has made memory card storage into a one-way street leading to PS3, that option's not available. However, gamers will be able to transport PS3 game saves and Virtual Memory Card data onto a PSP or Memory Stick for dumping on another PS3 hard drive, or for backup. Does this mean that people could copy their entire memory stick onto a PC and e-mail each other game saves and rosters? It's possible, although we haven't gotten the chance to test it out with anyone yet.
A look at some of the PS3's visualization settings.
So hopefully, PSP owners, you kept your Memory Stick Pro adapter in order to use the stick in the PS3...right? So far, I've popped in the memory stick to view pictures and watch sample videos that I downloaded to my PSP. It will run videos at either their native resolution, or blow them up to be shown on the monitor. Unless there's a firmware upgrade, I don't think that this is a more expensive solution to watch UMDs on your TV, especially not with Sony's money on Blu-ray.
It will also play music off the memory stick, although the file organization could potentially be even worse that the PSP's craptacular file management. Every song in each folder is alphabetized, and even an M3U playlist didn't fix the problem. Still, if you've figured out how to get album covers on your PSP, they'll show up onscreen while you run the system's smooth visualizations. Or, if you want, you can hit select a few times and turn everything off.
You'll also be able to copy music over to your hard drive from the memory stick, as I did with some Frank Sinatra, because that's how first person shooters should be played. The same applies to video content and photos. Unfortunately, even though I'd like to blast some Chimera right between their third and fourth eyes while listening to the Chairman of the Board, it appears that custom soundtracks are a no-go at this point.
Speaking of which, Phil Harrison showed off how the system is capable of rendering some fairly awesome slides, which Sony claims will revolutionize the way that people show off their photos. Well, you can't make people appreciate boring vacation pictures if they weren't there, but you can spice it up a little bit with the Photo Album, which basically renders your JPEGs as virtual photographs. It's another way to recreate a slideshow, but with a twist. Otherwise, there's something to be said for easily slapping your photos on the system to show off at ultra-high resolution when people come over. I saw details of pictures I took of the Trevi Fountain while in Rome that I didn't realize had picked up in such detail when I saw them on my computer. It's not something I'd been excited about before, but I've already invited family over to show off some pictures from August in Europe that I hadn't showed them before.
The identity of my girlfriend's cat as a rabbit notwithstanding, here's the Photo Album at work.
I also briefly tried out the web browser. While I wasn't exactly rushing to go to my MySpace page or look up a good restaurant on Yelp, I managed to pull up, well, the GameSpy page. The browser isn't perfect; it distorted some of the spotlights, but overall, it renders Flash quite easily. Before answering e-mails like Strong Bad, I had to get motivated by reading a few by the man himself. The browser's not too bad, from first glance, although it's not like I'll ever be able to update the GameSpy PS3 page from it.
Needless to say, between the slide show, music playback, web browser, and video downloads, both the Memory Stick and the PSP are going to have some very useful applications within the PlayStation 3. It's going to be very cool to show off some basic JPEGs on an HDTV, especially in the form that Sony's presenting. It's not reinventing the wheel, but it will get peoples' attention for sure. Also, the music playback is great, and while I haven't ripped a CD, instead, focusing on dropping my own content on the system, the accompanying visualizations are great. Hopefully, there will be a patch to update the system so that gamers can use custom soundtracks; as of now, the only sounds people will hear during Resistance are the garbled utterances of disgusting multi-eyed aliens and lots of gunfire. For more on the system, check out our overviews of the PS3's video outputs and backwards compatibility!
