THE SKINNY: Twenty-seven seconds of eye goo is the only addition to the upcoming HOSTEL unrated DVD according to director Eli Roth but that should be enough to get horror fans to pick up that DVD edition of HOSTEL on April 18th. If that wasn’t enough, Roth is hard at work on a script for the sequel of the film due out early next year. iF MAGAZINE took time out the busy directors day, and he told us about HOSTEL 2, Stephen King’s CELL, and other projects he may or may not do.
iF Magazine: What will be different on the HOSTEL unrated DVD?
ELI ROTH: 27 seconds of eye goo. Let’s demystify the process right now. Everything I wanted to get, I got by the ratings board and the studio wanted to know how they were going to do an unrated edition. We added extra eye goo, and made it unrated. There wasn’t lots of extra horrific footage that we shot, so the movie is pretty much the movie with 27 seconds of eye goo.
iF: What can you tell us about HOSTEL 2?
ROTH: SAW 2 was a big inspiration, they stepped it up and it was a fun sequel. I decided I better do HOSTEL 2 right now, while it’s fresh in my mind. It’s kind of got an expiration date on it. I had an idea for the sequel that I was really excited about, and I’m working on the script right now.
Unlike the first HOSTEL, this one is not going to be a family movie. This one will have some blood in it and be a little darker and more violent. I have always wanted to see a sequel where it picks up with the next shot after the first one left off. I think the sequel should start off tonally where the last one left off.
iF: After HOSTEL 2, you are directing Stephen King’s CELL?
ROTH: Right now what I’ve got is HOSTEL 2 and then CELL. The great thing about collaborating with Stephen King is once you’re doing his movie that’s it. Stephen King is pretty cool about people adapting his work and not getting too precious over it. He really liked HOSTEL and approved of me. I’d love to put him in as a cameo if he’s available for it. There’s certainly room for it, but he’d have to get killed in some horrible way.
iF: What about your project, THE BOX?
ROTH: That is something Richard Kelly and I have been working on for a while. I’d love to do it, but Rich is busy with SOUTHLAND TALES, and I’ve been busy on HOSTEL 1 and 2. One of these days, when the time is right we’ll do that film together.
