Onkyo's latest home cinema receiver is the world's first to offer DTS Neo:X
With the release of its latest upper-mid-range Spotify-enabled A/V receiver, Onkyo aims to provide even more freedom of choice for customers building a high-performance home entertainment system. The THX Select-2 Plus certified, 9.2-channel TX-NR1009 delivers high-power amplification as well as a host of state-of-the-art features, extensive connectivity and 32-bit processing power.
For a start the TX-NR1009’s expanded 9.2-channel configuration supports the world’s first implementation of the new DTS Neo:X surround sound system in a home cinema receiver. With Neo:X, users can supplement a standard 5.1-channel set-up with front-height, front-wide, or surround-back channels in a variety of configurations. Movies, games, and music can be enjoyed with a more expansive soundstage and even greater sense of ambience.
As well as DTS Neo:X, the TX-NR1009 is equipped with Dolby Pro Logic IIz and Audyssey DSX. These provide even more ways to incorporate front-height and front-wide speakers into a home entertainment system... total sonic immersion really is the ultimate goal with this receiver.
Eight HDMI inputs on the TX-NR1009 accept multiple high-definition playback devices, while twin HDMI outputs allow users to send a pristine signal simultaneously to two compatible displays. The HDMI implementation here supports both 3D video and an Audio Return Channel, as well as lossless audio and other high-resolution formats.
The TX-NR1009’s Ethernet connection enables Spotify Premium, Napster, Last.fm subscription music services as well as internet radio via vTuner and audio streaming from a PC or media server in the home. Supported audio file types include MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, FLAC, WAV, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, and LPCM. The receiver is compatible with the Windows 7 platform, including the DLNA 1.5-specified 'Play To' media-streaming feature. Wireless operation can be achieved by adding an optional Onkyo UWF-1 wireless USB adapter.
On-board video processing is handled by two advanced technologies: HQV Vida VHD1900 and Qdeo technology by Marvell. Vida offers upscaling of all 480i/p, 576p, and 720p video sources to high-resolution 1080p. Qdeo, meanwhile, performs full 4K (3840 x 2160) upscaling of 1080p sources. You may not have a 4k display yet but when they arrive this receiver will be ready for them...
The Vida processor, meanwhile, incorporates Auto HQV and HQV StreamClean technologies to enhance video images in real time and eliminate noise in compressed video. With multi-cadence tracking, expanded 12-bit colour processing, and four-field motion-adaptive de-interlacing, Vida optimises the quality of both standard and high-definition video images. Along with high quality upscaling and de-interlacing, HQV technology also allows independent ISF calibration for each video source.
Sonically this receiver gets a boost in sound quality thanks to the provision of dedicated separate Burr-Brown DACS for multi-channel (PCM1690 for all channels) and stereo listening (PCM1798). Combined with a rigid vibration-reducing cabinet, carefully laid out separate pre-amp/power amp blocks, a massive transformer and symmetrically arranged left/right channel circuits, the end result is alevel of musicality that's rare in a home cinema receiver.
The TX-NR1009 features a front-panel USB port to enable a direct digital connection of a USB flash drive or iPod/iPhone. Audio files such as MP3, WMA, FLAC, and AAC can be played through the owner’s home entertainment system with far greater power and fidelity than on a portable device. An additional rear USB port gives extra flexibility and is configured to accomodate the optional UWF-1 wireless adapter.
Advanced room-acoustics correction and equalisation is provided by a brace of Audyssey technologies - Audyssey MultEQ XT, Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume - and Dolby Volume. Owners can customise the final soundstage to the dimensions of their room and enjoy well-balanced audio at any volume level.
Accessing menus and changing the receiver’s settings is simplified by an overlaid graphical on-screen display and a convenient GUI that allows users to navigate internet radio and iPod/iPhone contents. The OSD and GUI both operate over HDMI.
Finally, with Powered Zone 2 and Zone 3 outputs (plus pre-outs/12v triggers for Zone 2/3) and pre-amp outputs for all 9.2-main channels this receiver offers an incredibly high level of versatility for anybody trying to create a top-flight home entertainment hub.
