I know i Gain about 6db more everytime I double the drivers. But what I really want is a uniform response between all the seats because I have a mini cinema with 6 seats. But I have neighbours and they call to the police if I put the volume too high, so i don't care about SPL but I would want uniform response at the maximum posible extension. AT the same time I know that in very low frecuencies the sound is more perceibed than heared, and it requires a nice amount of SPL to archieve that, so i probably can install Bass shakers in the seats.

Ported or sealed?

Personally, I always prefer sealed anyway, and sealed can go just as deep as ported if they are capable enough. Placing multiple subwoofers is good for creating an even response in room, but you have to be careful and be aware that the more subwoofers you use, the more likely you are to end up having to deal with phase issues, which can cause big dips in the response. Generally speaking, a pair of subwoofer, placed correctly, and setup and integrated properly will result in a pretty even response. 2 really well setup subwoofers that are eq'd properly will be better than 4 subwoofers that have just be put anywhere in the hope they will sound good.

If you are wanting to put multiple subwoofers in your room, the more compact form of sealed subwoofers will certainly be an advantage.

Personalmente, yo siempre prefiero sellado de todos modos, y sellado puede ir tan profundo como portado si son lo suficientemente capaces. Un diseño BR puede sonar tan preciso como un sistema cerrado, pero el carácter del sonido no será el mismo y el subwoofer BR será muchas veces mayor. ¿Está pensando en el reemplazo de lo que tienes ahora con un nuevo subwoofer (s)?

El carácter del sonido es el mismo cuando se igualan curvas de respuestas entre sub sellado y BR. Es demostrable en un "blind test" serio. Los probemas de fase y group delay son un mito que llevan añlos arrastrándose en el mundo subjetivista. Cualquier sub bien diseñado (cumplen prácticamente casi todos) tienen unos decay tan bajos que nadie puede detectarlos ni en campo libre (una vez ubicados en sala mejor ni hablamos je,je,je). Los problemas de fase en frecuencias omnidireccionales van ligados a la zona modal de la sala que tiene infinitamente más peso que el propio subwoofer, por eso cuando igualas respuesta en toda la banda entre un diseño sellado y otro de BR, no hay diferencia audible alguna de caracter entre ellos.
El problema es que es difícil realizar una priueba seria sobre el tema ya que igualar curvas con suficiente precisión para que un oido entrenado no note las diferencias de curva requiere tiempo.

En lo que sí estoy de acuerdo en que con un sistema multisubs de sellados bien colocados incluso previo a la EQ, ya tienes un sistema de muy alta calidad y alto SPLmax.

The best way to describe the differences is usually by way of system Q. A sealed subwoofer has its sound quality defined by its system Q value. Ported subs are not defined this way, but the audible sound character can be described similarly. A large low tuned subwoofer (and to tune low they need to be pretty large) has a sound character similar to that of a very low Q sealed subwoofer, while a properly designed sealed sub will have a balanced system Q value. This is the main difference, but I can also easily pick out more texture in the low end content of a high end sealed sub compared to a low tuned ported one.

I have done this test directly myself, so can speak from experience.

Even when you take these steps to design the subwoofers to perform as close to each other as possible, they still dont 'sound' the same to the ear (this is what system Q describes).

El diferentes Q sólo cambia la respuesta y extensión del sub, sus niveles de group delay, y de SPLmax.. peor ello no implica que tras igualar curvas se puedan distinguir, de hecho conforme cambias el diseño acústico se distinguen porque varía la curva según diseño.

I find there is more detail in the sound. Some effect with the ported sub will sound like one continuous low rumble, while with the sealed subwoofer it will wound more like a series of low end thuds, each with slightly different impact and sound of its own, and together they make up the whole sound. A high end sealed sub will also go deeper than any ported subs not tuned to 15hz or lower, and can produce some notes you really dont hear at all, which is difficult to describe if you havent experienced it before. The upper bass also has more impact, and more of a feel to it with some effects, and these can be little subtle effects the ported sub doesnt convey in the same way.

I will try get a system together as soon as I can, and when I do I will build myself proper subwoofer(s), at which point I will be happy to let people come and listen.

Me parece que hay más detalle en el sonido. Once you achieve this then you have matched the two responses of the subs because both play out flat. Even so, they sound very different. If for example you have an SVS Ultra subwoofer, you can run it ported or sealed. If you want to test this scenario, run it ported and eq'd flat, and listen to it, then seal it, re-run the eq so the response is again flat, and listen again. You will find the two sound differently, not least that the sealed sub will sound a bit quieter, even though the measured response tells you differently.

If they didnt sound different, why would anyone need to complicate things by having ported designs, or sealed designs, we would simply have one or the other.

A speak producing material as say 50 only, doesnt sound the same as one producing 50hz and 12hz together. This is in my own experience though, and the same content produced by only a speaker compared to a speaker and a port also sound different. This is even though the measured in room responses identical as close as is possible.

I did a direct test between the SVS PBU and PCU, both in the same room, on the same system, with the same eq and the same measured response. Even these two supposedly identical subs idnt quite sound identical, and the difference wasnt measurable at all with any of the equipment I had to hand.

Siento no poder estar de acuerdo con ello. Si dos subwoofers miden clavados de respuesta en punto de escucha no hay quien los distinga en "blind test".
En lo que sí puedo estar de acuerdo es en que clavar la curva de respuesta de ambos hasta hacerlos indistinguibles en "blins test" no es fácil, ya que hay que trabajar mucho la EQ para que un oido educado no sea capaz de distingurlos.

Las diferencias que citas son producidas oar la distorsión IMD, pero con la IMD sucede lo mismo que con la THD: Siempre y cuando los armónicos producidos por el sub sean suficientemente bajos en intensidad respecto a la "señal pura" no hay quien los distinga, más aún cuando escuchamos señal musical y efectos de cine (plagados de armónicos y frecuencias sonando a la vez... y no de tonos puros).


Eso sí, es cierto que bajo mediciones el sellado da una señal más pura; es el más fuel (menos coloreado), pero que no tiene relevancia alguna en condiciones de escucha reales.

Siento no poder estar de acuerdo con ello. Si dos subwoofers miden clavados de respuesta en punto de escucha no hay quien los distinga en "blind test".
En lo que sí puedo estar de acuerdo es en que clavar la curva de respuesta de ambos hasta hacerlos indistinguibles en "blins test" no es fácil, ya que hay que trabajar mucho la EQ para que un oido educado no sea capaz de distingurlos.

Las diferencias que citas son producidas oar la distorsión IMD, pero con la IMD sucede lo mismo que con la THD: Siempre y cuando los armónicos producidos por el sub sean suficientemente bajos en intensidad respecto a la "señal pura" no hay quien los distinga, más aún cuando escuchamos señal musical y efectos de cine (plagados de armónicos y frecuencias sonando a la vez... y no de tonos puros).

In this case, lets make it a goal for us to do these tests. The best conditions I can provide is to make a subwoofer using the same amplifier and speaker, but make 2 cabinets. We can test them in the same system, in the same room, and use Audyssey to eq them flat, then use REW to independently confirm the responses of the 2 subwoofers are as close to each other as is possible. We can then do a blins test and see what you think.

I have done this test many times, though I will admit it was not a blind test. The results are sufficiently different to not need a blind test in my experience, but I have no problem doing a blind test and would find the exercise enjoyable. Could I ask, what direct experience you have in this area.

He realizado en "blind test" pruebas de este tipo y si igualas la curva de los subs a probar lo suficiente en todo el rango nadie los ha podido distinguir jamás.

Sabes perfectamente que en una prueba "no blind test" no eliminamos el efecto placebo que nos produce nuestra propia sugestión al saber en cada momento cual está sonando.

Tú mismo puedes realizar un test con la ayuda de una segunda persona. Lo único necesario es un sistema de conmutación en el que una segunda persona pueda varíar el sub y la memoria de EQ según configuración y pasar una tanda aleatoria de al menos 10 intentos (de secuencias aleatorias AB, BA, AA, BB, etc....) ; en las que matemáticamnete hay que acertar 9 o 10 para que se considere realmente los distingues y no es azar.

Placebo effects are always a concern in any test situation*, but I would have to question your blind test as when you compare different subwoofer types, there are differences. I got a guy in AVF to do this for himself here:

and he is reporting the very same experience I describe and others also agree with. There are cases where subwoofers will sound very similar and are almost indistinguishable, but not when you are comparing different design types. Again, I would ask as to your reasoning as to why different types of subwoofers exists if they simply sound the same once they are eq'd flat. I dont wish to be impolite, but I have to question your testing if you cannot distinguish the difference between a high end ported and a high end sealed subwoofer, when both are capable of reference level playback. Even more so, less capable subwoofers are harder to match to each other due to performance limitations. Once I get myself a good system again, I will invite you for a listening session, and we can do this together and come to our conclusions.

We can quote group delay, harmonic distortions, spectrograph results, in room response measurements to our hearts content, but until this test is performed its all theory. One final thing I would ask, is why do you think I would turn my back on ported designs if what you state is true. Sealed designs are more expensive if you want high spl output to be produced cleanly to low frequencies. You typically need a pair of drivers and at least double the clean power to match the output of a ported sub, so why would I pay these costs if there is no additional benefit from it.

*I do not agree that high end cables make a difference. A clean reproduction from an amplifier is clean no matter the cost, so a more expensive amplifier doesnt always make any real difference. High end power cables are pointless. Thes are things I believe, and its my belief that if you have the correct specification, then the end result is good, even if the cables etc are cheap.

Placebo effects are always a concern in any test situation*, but I would have to question your blind test as when you compare different subwoofer types, there are differences. I got a guy in AVF to do this for himself here:

and he is reporting the very same experience I describe and others also agree with. There are cases where subwoofers will sound very similar and are almost indistinguishable, but not when you are comparing different design types. Again, I would ask as to your reasoning as to why different types of subwoofers exists if they simply sound the same once they are eq'd flat. I dont wish to be impolite, but I have to question your testing if you cannot distinguish the difference between a high end ported and a high end sealed subwoofer, when both are capable of reference level playback. Even more so, less capable subwoofers are harder to match to each other due to performance limitations. Once I get myself a good system again, I will invite you for a listening session, and we can do this together and come to our conclusions.

We can quote group delay, harmonic distortions, spectrograph results, in room response measurements to our hearts content, but until this test is performed its all theory. Yo creo que ese es uno de los motivos principales por el cual es posible notaras diferencias claras, al igual que podría ser por una curva no sujficientemente igualada.
Este tipo de pruebas las puedes realizar tú mismo con la ayuda de una segunda persona que conmute entre subs y memorias sin que sepas que está sonando en cada momento.
Si aún así, insistes en demostrar que eres capaz de diferenciarlo y me lo quieres demostrar podemos plantear una prueba en Tarragona pasadas las fiestas de Navidad.

I have not done a blind test, but I have tested lots and lots of subwoofers. The differences are such that a blind test is not needed but this fact would only make the blind test easier. The problem with a blind test in this case is that swapping from one system to another takes time, so a true blind test is impossible without 2 system you can quickly switch between. To conduct the test, you will need a sealed sub and a ported sub, each using the same speaker and amplifier. The sealed sub will need to be dual speaker to compete with the low end spl output of the ported one.

If you can promise these conditions then we have a good basis for this test.

About the response curve measured with software, I have to say that is a Sweep wave, maybe i am confused but one thing is the measured wave and another thing the real world.

So 2 speakers can have the same response curve, but can sound different, because in real world the driver has to reproduce at the same time various different frecuencies and not only one. So I think this can be the thing cause sealed and ported can sound different, because the driver movement in sealed configuration is linear and in reflex not.

IS only a theory, but for me is pretty evident that the sound is different.
