Industrial Light & Magic looks back at 40 years of special effects work in films in a recently released retrospective. The short clip features numerous scenes from films the company has worked on, including Star Wars, Pacific Rim, Hook, and more.

In 1975 George Lucas formed Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to create the special effects for his space opera Star Wars. Since that time, ILM has contributed to over 300 films in the process earning 15 Academy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Visual Effects and 28 Scientific and Technical Achievement from the Academy.

How One Brilliant Decision In 1973 Made George Lucas A Multi-Billionaire Today

George Lucas is a very rich man. In fact, on our list of the richest celebrities on the planet, George Lucas ranks #1. After Disney agreed to buy his company for $4 billion, Lucas' net worth jumped to $7.3 billion! That's $4.3 billion more than his good buddy Steven Spielberg. That's $4.6 billion more than Oprah! What's really incredible is that he basically made the majority of his fortune solely off one idea: Star Wars. As a director, his resume is actually pretty thin. Technically speaking, George has only directed six feature films in his entire career and four of them were Star Wars movies. By comparison, Steven Spielberg has directed more than 30 different feature films, many of which went on to become some of the most successful classic films of all time. So how did George Lucas generate such a huge personal fortune off a single movie franchise? It all comes down to one incredibly simple yet amazingly brilliant billion-dollar decision in 1973.

Prior to 1973, George Lucas was still very much struggling to make his way in Hollywood. His first major directorial debut was 1971's "THX 1138″ which starred Robert Duvall in a futuristic world where android robots control society with drugs that suppress human emotions. Lucas' next movie was 1973's "American Graffiti". Unlike THX 1138, American Graffiti was a monster hit. It eventually became one of the most profitable movies of all time, earning $200 million off a budget of just $775,000. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress and Best Editing. Lucas was now a hot commodity.

Lucas first had the idea for what he described as a "western set in space" called "The Star Wars", in 1971. He worked on the script for the next two years, while his personal debt mounted and his film career floundered. After the massive success of American Graffiti, Lucas was in the best possible position to negotiate for his next film. He earned $150,000 for directing American Graffiti and his managers encouraged him to ask for a huge salary bump. Simultaneously, an executive at 20th Century Fox studios named Alan Ladd, Jr. loved American Graffiti but did not understand this "Star Wars" concept. Despite the fact that no other executive at Fox thought the movie would be a success, Ladd was able to secure Lucas a deal to direct the film beginning in 1976 for a budget of $8.25 million. The final budget eventually swelled to $11 million.

The Brilliant Decision

Thanks to the success of American Graffiti, Lucas was entitled to a salary of $500,000 for directing what was now being called simply "Star Wars". Instead of accepting the nearly 300% pay raise, George went to Fox with a proposition. He offered to keep his salary at $150,000 in exchange for two seemingly insignificant requests: 1) That he retain all merchandising rights, and 2) that he would retain the rights to any sequels. As crazy as it sounds now, at the time this was actually a fantastic deal for the studio. Fox had previously lost a fortune in the merchandising business with monumental failure of 1967's Doctor Dolittle. Moreover, merchandise just wasn't a meaningful revenue stream in general back then. As for sequel rights, these were also not an important factor for Fox considering the fact that no executive thought the movie had a snowball's chance in hell of making money the first time around. So off George went to finalize his script with $150,000 and a what seemed like an incredibly naive contract in his pocket.

As we all know now, Star Wars was a humongous hit when it was finally released in 1977. Star Wars went on to become one of the highest grossing films of all time. When you adjust for inflation, Star Wars is the second highest grossing movie in history. In six months the film had earned $220 million in the United States alone ($830 million in inflation adjusted dollars). To date, Star Wars has earned $775 million at the box office ($2.5 billion after adjusting for inflation).

But the real money for George didn't come from box office receipts. Between 1977 and 1978, Star Wars sold $100 million worth of toys. 35 years later and Star Wars themed toys have generated $12 billion worth of revenue. Today, Star Wars licensed toys produce $3 billion a year in revenues. And keep in mind, after the first film George owned 100% of the rights to the entire franchise. The next five Star Wars movies would go on to earn an additional $3.5 billion at the box office. In total, the Star Wars empire has sold $4 billion worth of DVDs and VHS, $3 billion worth of video games, $2 billion worth of books and another $1.3 billion through various other licensing deals. That brings the grand grand revenue total after 35 years worth of Star Wars licensing to $27 billion. After expenses, taxes, fees etc… George Lucas had earned himself an impressive $3.3 billion net worth by 2012. Then, Disney came calling and gave him another $4 billion to purchase the entire franchise outright. The moral of the story? Without retaining these rights, Lucas would have done very well but his earnings would have been a tiny fraction of what they became. This windfall would not have been remotely possible if it wasn't for that single brilliant decision made back in 1973. George Lucas essentially traded $350,000 for more than $7 billion. That might be the smartest business decision of all time! So the lesson here is, if you believe in your idea, don't give up your rights easily!

La compra en si misma no cambia nada. De hecho los productos Lucasfilm con copyright 2013 y 2014 todavía aparecen sólo con el logo de Lucasfilm, sin rastro de Disney. Es decir Lucasfilm pertenece a Disney pero no es Disney por raro que eso suena y por incierto que -en el fondo- sea (ya que de facto Disney la posee como posee Mickey Mouse).

Otro tema es si quieren cambiar partes jurídicas o de registros pero no sé si debe ser tan fácil o si debe haber dificultades legales.

Cómo impone la Barcaza de Jabba :babas

Toda la parte de Tatooine es como un western espacial, como Mos Eisley en la Guerra de las Galaxias. Me encanta :encanto

Siendo la peor de la trilogía clásica, el Retorno del Jedi cada vez está mejor valorada, y los ewoks se "tragan" mejor. Fantástica película.

Por cierto Synch, ¿Dennis Muren es el segundo por la izquierda?

Ya lo creo que impone Jack. Es impresionante, sin duda.

Recuerdo que la última vez que vi El Retorno del Jedi, la escena de la barcaza de Jabba me recordó a películas de aventuras piratescas de Errol Flynn, como la magnífica El Capitán Blood.

La verdad que sí que recuerda a esa película, pero no es nada extraño, porque si te fijas, la saga toma prestadas multitud de elementos del cine clásico y de los westerns. Algunos ejemplos: el "duelo en la taberna" en Mos Eisley (Han y Greedo ), los cazarrecompensas (Boba Fett), el famoso "wanted" del Oeste (la deuda de Han Solo con Jabba el hutt), el uniforme de Solo que recuerda a los de la Caballería Norteamericana, etc.

También, como bien apuntas, mucho del cine de "capa y espada" de Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, Stewart Granger y compañía. Por ejemplo, siempre me han recordado los duelos de sables a esas películas: perfecta coreografía, duelos elegantes, lentos y bellos.

Mmmm creo que no y además diría que el no estaba en esa secuencia de efectos. En el Retorno del Jedi se encargó de las escenas en el bosque (las persecuciones con las motojet y creo que colaboró con Tippett en los AT-ST), algo en el palacio de Jabba y la batalla final.

La parte de la barcaza tal vez fuera dirigida por uno de los otros dos supervisores, Richard Edlund o Ken Ralston. No logro identificar a ninguno en la foto!

Edito con extractos de una entrevista a Dennis sobre el Retorno del Jedi:

I just finished a shot in E.T. and had to jump on an airplane and fly over to do some blue screen stuff for the rancor pit creature. Then I came back and finished the stuff we were doing in E.T. That’s the way these shows usually go.

On [Return of the Jedi], because there was so much work from an effects standpoint, we split it into three sections. I did most of the land stuff and the forests, and I think a few other things. Richard Edlund did the desert stuff and also I think the big final attack on the Death Star, and Ken Ralston did most of the other big space scene sequences. And the stuff I did, also, was stop-motion. There was stop-motion here and there. That just meant we could each be focusing on a smaller number of shots. I mean, it was a huge show, shot-wise, and it just made sense that you could focus more on each shot and make it better if you weren’t dealing with too many shots.

Uff, es que si analizas ahora mismo la escena de las Moto- Jet, no ha envejecido nada. Siempre ha sido una de mis favoritas de la saga. Una maravilla :wtf

Añado, de esa misma entrevista, como funcionaba el tema de los FX en la trilogía clásica:

Dennis Muren: You know, I don’t really have much memory of Richard. I remember him being around. [Laughs] I’m sure we had communications on things, but the communications were pretty much with George because he knew us all and Richard didn’t. He just knew what he wanted and knew what was important and wasn’t important. Richard was very nice and deferred to him, at least in front of us. It was even the same on Empire with [Irvin] Kershner.

Star Wars Was Just Screened In China For The First Time

In China, The Force is finally Awakening.

That’s because the country is screening the original Star Wars trilogy in theaters for the first time ever, as part of the Shanghai International Film Festival. While Western audiences enjoyed A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of The Jedi on the big screen back during their original run, China missed out on cultural event. The country had just exited the tumultuous Cultural Revolution of the 1970s, and was in a state of upheaval. Not surprisingly, China had bigger agendas on its plate than screening trips to a galaxy far, far, away.

But while the Chinese were able to secure bootleg and pirated copies of the trilogy for home viewing, 2015 marks the first time that they could see it on a large screen, the way it was meant to be experienced.

The screening is also a win for Disney and Lucasfilm, who need to properly prep Chinese audiences for the franchise’s major comeback this winter with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

"This will be the first-ever theatrical screening of the original trilogy in China," Kerwin Lo, vice president and general manager of Walt Disney Studios China, told AFP News. "The huge buzz and excitement generated is going to be great for the Star Wars franchise and the upcoming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
