From screen writer Nick Cave and director John Hillcoat comes a new film that totally reinvents the Australian historical drama. While maintaining the high quality of the current crop of local films, The Proposition stands in sharp contrast to those pictures, memorably displaying the sheer diversity of what the local film industry is capable of.
Almost the anti-Ned Kelly, the cast of The Proposition not only includes an admirable line-up of local and international talent, but also features Australia like it has never been seen on-screen before. Shot by an international crew, including a French cinematographer, the Australian landscape is captured in a way that fully depicts its unrelenting nature as it would have been seen by many of this country’s early settlers.

Everything in The Proposition rings true. From the performances to the script to the look and feel of the entire production, this film is sure to be remembered as a true classic of Australian cinema, with critical acclaim both here and abroad.

The Proposition is a powerful and epic story written by iconic musician Nick Cave. In this uncompromising Australian period drama, conscience competes with loyalty and love spurs revenge as three brothers fight for their place in a harsh and unforgiving landscape.

Set in the 1880s, the film opens in the middle of a frenzied gunfight between police and a gang of outlaws. Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) and his brother Mikey are captured by Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone). Together with their formidable brother Arthur (Danny Huston), they are wanted for a brutal crime. Stanley makes Charlie a seemingly impossible proposition in an attempt to bring an end to the cycle of turmoil.

The brooding soundtrack by Nick Cave incorporates soft chamber pieces, ghostly moodscapes and whispered laments that are as starkly beautiful as the landscape of the film.
