Y me lo he pillado.
Hmmm, having played it all weekend, I can honestly say, this game ranks up in the top ten games of all time. Especially considering it's never even been patched yet either. Remarkably well done.
I love the effects I get when I zap a giant fire ant on the head with a laser rifle. They put a lot of thought into this game. An unbelievable amount.
I set up a sniper blind, with some fragmentation mines covering my six, and sure enough after I started firing, the first indication I had of an assault from that direction, was when I heard a muffled "whoomph" and saw a bloody leg fly past me.
The combat system - which a lot of people complained was going to be just "Oblivion with guns" - does have a fair amount of depth to it. Positioning matters - you won't get a good head shot if you're below and behind a super mutant, for example. Also, a lot of the time it can make sense to shoot something other than the torso or the head - you can actually set off grenades in enemies' hands as they get read to throw, shoot at arms/weapons to disarm an enemy (though they will try to pick up dropped weapons) shoot at the legs off heavily armored melee fighters to slow them down, etc. There's no metagame cover mechanic (press Y to stick to cover, etc.) but positioning yourself behind obstacles with parts of your body hidden does work.
Though for me, the one thing that makes this game is the immersion factor... Combat could have been mediocre, and I'd still have been completely sucked in. The level of optional detail is staggering, it really makes you feel like you're there...
Oh yea, the other thing I love is hidden sniper criticals. You don't even need a head shot for a guaranteed kill anymore. You can hit a leg and blow it off.
It is an open world, but a much smaller one than in Oblivion. The huge upside is that as a result, the world is *much* more densely populated with all kinds of non-generic, meaningful stuff. No more 50 ruined forts, only a handful of which hold some kind of unique encounter. (I liked Oblivion a lot, but I actually wished many times that it had 1/2 the locations with twice the stuff to do) On the downside, things can feel a little close together sometimes, but like I've raved before, the game is immersive as hell and suspending disbelief is not hard...
I've experimented a little bit with the character creation, and here are my thoughts to date.
The best way to start out IMO, is to put a bunch of points on intelligence at the very beginning (INT 9 for me) and one point on AGL or PER.
You start with a lot of skill points at every level this way.
You use Perks to gain SPECIAL points to help in AGL and PER, perhaps CHR for bartering and speech.
In my analysis, this helps your overall skill points much more than using perks to get "Gun Nut" or "Daddy's Boy" points as having a high base ability score with many allocatable points per level increase offsets the temporary gains from using those perks to boost skill points instead.
A good perk ASAP (lvl 4 I think) to get is "Educated" so you get an extra three skill points to allocate per level increase afterwards.
I haven't analyzed this rigorously, since I am too busy playing, but that's my take. YMMV.
Damn! I finished the game mad.gif The ending came so sudden to me, I haven't done half the side quests! I thought after the end you can continue just wandering around but no, game over. Now I got to load an earlier save and leave the main quest for when I've done everything else imaginable.
Got to admit the final battle sequence is perhaps the most awesome thing I've seen in a PC game ever. No details cause I don't want to spoil anything.
