The RS1 & HD1 at CES from my (humble and non-technical) perspective:
I spent a considerable amount of time viewing the “pre-production” RS1 which replaces the “engineering sample” RS1 I saw at EHX. Tryg and Cam Man were there along w/ a few other AVSers. We were able to view many different HD-DVD film clips. I even went back for a second viewing later that evening (after viewing other projectors). I also viewed the Pearl vs. HD1 shoot-out downstairs, again w/ lotsa different APL mixed film clips which was nice, unlike at EHX. Speaking of; Hey Mark P. we missed you - sorry you couldn't make it.
I pretty much agree w/ all that has been said here before w/ a couple of additional notes/opinions.
1) The casing is brand new - and now has that high-gloss “piano” black finish, which (to me) really gives it a nice expensive (and exquisite) look. The front remains flat black to control reflections.
2) The units are manufactured In Japan (vs. Taiwan or China)
3) The picture was extremely sharp (IMHO) - maybe even a little too sharp for my taste. Hence I looked for a way to soften it just a bit (!) (No I didn’t try to de-focus it!) I was told that the unit (Gennum chip) has a noise reduction feature in the menu that is variable over a range of 1 - 30. It was labeled DNR (Dynamic Noise Ratio?) - not "3-D NR" (Gennum nomenclature) as I was expecting. However - I don’t know much about Gennum, or how the chip is being implemented - or it’s adjustability. Anyway - we played w/ this adjustment a little and at the 6 - 7 level it really seemed to bring the picture more in line w/ my liking. The picture not only became slightly smoother - but excessive film grain/noise (dependent upon source) was considerably reduced in sky blue scenes and large patches of color. Looked good to my eyes - but further testing would be needed to ensure not too much detail is being sacrificed in the process. To each his own. At least the adjustability is there.
4) Several measurements were being taken off the screen w/ light meters (see previous posts for readings). Regardless of the results - this baby is bright. A full-white field was virtually blinding! (Hey - if it’s bright enough for Tryg - you know it’s definitely bright!) For sure I’ll be using low-bulb setting on my 1.0 matte white 106" screen. And maybe even an ND filter (to cut down lumens) until the bulb ages. 12 -15 foot-lamberts is fine for me as my RS1 will only be used for film viewing - not sports or TV shows.
5) Shading (uniformity) looked very good. We’ll have to see how this shakes out when production units start arriving. I watch a lot of black and white films so this is extremely important to me. Hopefully - if the shading is less than stellar - wm can come to the rescue.
6) We played w/ the pixel shift feature (very nice) - although it was not needed as the convergence looked exceptional. However we didn’t scrutinize every quadrant of the screen to look for MC errors (I do wish we had given it a more thorough look though).
7) Very quiet. I was somewhat alone w/ the machine a couple times and I noticed it was MUCH quieter (low bulb setting) than the EHX unit. Plenty quiet for my needs. Rated 25db (for what that’s worth).
Most impressive to me though was the shoot-out (vs. Pearl) in the all-black “curtain room.” I’ve never seen black (2:35) bars that “black” before on a projector. They were blacker than on my bedroom 36" tube (XBR Wega). Hey - maybe I don’t need to convert to CH after all! Additionally - star fields, credits, sub-titles, bright objects within a black screen simply leapt off the screen w/ an incredible 3-D like effect. On the Pearl - these bright objects were much less bright (as the DI was obviously clamping down).
9) Last but not least. The JVC folks (Lon, Ken and everyone) went way over the top to be as patient and courteous as humanly possible considering our battery of questions, concerns and comments. (And you know how irritating AVSers can be! - well some of us)
Again THANK YOU JVC very much and congratulations on a fabulous machine.
