UHD Camerawork tweaks
While watching the UHD, I noticed how the camerawork all felt like a modern Fincher film. I wasn't sure if it was possible in 1995 to avoid any jostling while dollying or any other camera movements.
I stacked the
BD and UHD to compare, and I saw that nearly every shot involving camera movement (pan, tilt, zoom, or dolly) had been subtly stabilized and smoothed. It seems Fincher utilized the latitude afforded by the Super35 frame to make these tweaks.
This reminded me of a commentary (Dragon Tattoo?) in which Fincher said that he doesn't like reactive camerawork, such as when a camera struggles to follow an actor, causing them to fall out of frame or go out of focus.
On the UHD, the adjustments make the camera "anticipate" the actors' movements, as though it were choreographed, rather than trying to catch up. The moves are more efficient: they usually start and end earlier while being smoother. This gives the shots the feel of a modern Fincher with its precision.
I slowed down some shots and made GIFs. The changes are subtle but noticeable after a few run-throughs.
