3) Rec2020: these profiles were created using standard rec-2020 coordinates, as rec2020, unlike DCI-P3, isn't an option in the software. [EDIT: there is now an official BT2020 profile from JVC, see link to HDR settings and f/w update at the top of the post. It should be identical to mine but I haven't checked yet.] [EDIT2: confirmed, they are identical]Same, pick up the version you want to use depending on whether your model has a filter or not. You can also select a version without the filter to use in a model with the filter if you want to try to reach as far as possible without losing too much brightness.
REC-2020F (with filter): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...%20Filter.prof
REC-2020NF (no filter): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...%20Filter.prof
I haven't done extensive tests with this one but it seems to be working fine.
Like the rec-709 profiles, this profile tracks better if you autocal it after importing it.

Custom gamma profile (only valid for my screen / setup or similar, Carada BW 88" 16/9, high lamp, iris fully open):

By the way, these curves are simple text files using numbers for each gamma point for R, G and B, so theoretically you Might be able to simply edit the text file of my gamma curve and adjust things (for example raise the lower numbers to raise shadow details), as long as you don't touch the file format. NOTE: I haven't tried this and there is a risk of bricking your PJ, so try at your own risk if you modify the file manually!

Actually I just replaced it with a new version (same name) as the roll-off was clipping around 3000nits, so I was slightly clipping in my Mad Max check clip. It shouldn't change much apart from that, but re-download if you want to latest version.
This curve looks better to me even on my small screen.
I'm starting to understand how this works (well, I think).
The less brightness you have, the steeper you want the gamma curve.
A multiplier of 5 is a good medium. A multiplier of 6 is for very small screens, and a multiplier of 4 for very large screens.
The multiplier, apart from making the chart visible in Calman, determines the overall brightness of the picture (the steeper the curve, the quicker it goes from black to white, so the brighter the picture).
I was wrong to aim for 1200nits because it doesn't leave any headroom, it only makes the picture slightly darker (and less contrasty) than it could be. The headroom comes with the roll-off at the top of the curve. It's better to target the actual peak brightness you wish to resolve, and use the last control point to adjust the roll off to resolve above that if you want to, without darkening the picture too much if you don't start the roll off too early.
This is why I use the last usable control point, 80% to adjust the roll-off. You don't want to use 90% as there is nothing there, at least for now (it's beyond 4000nits) and you don't want to touch 60% or you'll start darkening the picture only to resolve above 1100nits, where there is very little content anyway). What you want to do is finding a point for 80% which is slightly below the max. It was 900 when I was targeting 1200nits, it seems to be around 925 when I am targeting 1000nits.
This new curve looks a bit brighter and more contrasty. There is still a slight undersaturation, I'm not sure how to compensate for that, I'll work on this soon.
We need a roll-off for the titles mastered to 4000nits which actually use the extra headroom, but doing this causes a slight loss of peak brightness (and also a slight loss of contrast) with titles mastered to 1000/1100nits.
So the curve with the roll-off is safer (and more versatile as you only need one curve for all titles), but the curve without a roll-off would maximise contrast for titles mastered up to the hard clipping point.
I plan to try a curve for my low lamp setting to see what it does (actual peak Y to around 120nits). I'll target 1100nits and I'll make one version with no roll-off for titles mastered up to 1100nits (about 50% of the titles), to maximise contrast for these titles, and one version with a softer roll-off resolving up to 4000nits (the other 50%, although only half of these potentially shoot above 1100nits, with only a handful having actual content above 1100nits, Mad Max being one of them). This is, of course, if the HDR metadata can be trusted. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
This second curve can be the only curve you use, it will be valid for all titles without any clipping thanks to the roll-off, the only downside will be a slight loss of contrast for titles mastered below 4000nits for no benefit (similar to when using superwhite instead of standard levels with bluray). If you know the title is mastered to 1100nits or less, you can use the first curve to maximise contrast.
I've tried low lamp today for a little while and I like the black floor better.
I'll post these when I'm done with them.
I also plan to standardise the filenames so we know what they are when we discuss them.
I'll probably use something like ActualPeakYWhenCreatingTheCurve-Target-ActualClipping point (all in nits), so for example my very first curve would be 200-1200-1200, then the next two I posted would be 200-1200-3000 and 200-1200-4000.
The one I posted today was 190-1000-3000 (I hadn't checked the levels), and I revised it to 190-1000-4000 after I checked the levels.
I won't bother with the 3000nits version in the future, I'll only do two versions next time:
120-1100-4000 (Universal curve for all titles if you don't know how the title was mastered) and
120-1100-1100 (Contrast Optimized Curve for titles mastered up to 1100nits if you know the metadata an want to eek the last bit of performance out of the display without risking clipping)
