Bottom line is, even if you see 'em coming, you're not ready
for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it
does.So what are we, helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are
gonna come. You can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that
counts. That's when you find out who you are. You'll see what I mean.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #1 Sells Out Before Going on Sale

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1, which is due out this coming Wednesday, has already sold out and been sent for a second printing.

The comic’s publisher, BOOM! Studios, made the announcement Thursday, nearly a full week before its new series was scheduled to launch. Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 is from writer Jordie Bellaire and artist Dan Mora. It reimagines the bygone pop culture phenomenon that hit hardest in the late ‘90s for our current times, taking the familiar characters—Buffy, Giles, Willow, Xander, etc.—and basically putting them in 2018. Original Buffy TV series creator Joss Whedon (also the director behind the TV show Firefly and the mega hit movie The Avengers) is on board as a story consultant.

That second printing will hit on Feb. 20 with a new cover by Amelia Vidal, a new cover (pictured above) starring the young witch Willow Rosenberg.

The series selling out isn’t really a surprise. Both Bellaire and Mora are massive talents on the rise. It is, however, maybe a little interesting that it sold out before even going on sale. Somebody maybe underestimated just how interested comics fans still are in all things Buffy, or in the rising creative team.

Also, if you haven’t pre-ordered a copy and are interested in that sort of thing, you may have to do some slaying yourself this Wednesday. Not of vampires, heavens no, but rather of the hopes of fellow collectors and readers, as you snap up a copy that would-be theirs.

Anyway, enough of all that. The full release from BOOM! Studios can be found below:

BOOM! Studios announced today that Buffy The Vampire Slayer #1, reimagining the groundbreaking pop culture phenomenon from the very beginning in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products, has sold out at the distributor level before arriving in comic book shops on January 23rd.

To meet this overwhelming demand from fans, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #1 SECOND PRINTING VARIANT will arrive in stores on February 20th with a stunning all-new cover by Amelia Vidal, featuring everyone’s favorite young witch – Willow Rosenberg!

Eisner Award nominated writer Jordie Bellaire (Redlands) and Russ Manning award-winning artist Dan Mora (Klaus, Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), along with series creator and story consultant Joss Whedon (the visionary writer/director behind Firefly, Marvel’s The Avengers, and more) welcome you back to the Hellmouth for the very first time!

This is the Buffy Summers you know, who wants what every average teenager wants: friends at her new school, decent grades, and to escape her imposed destiny as the next in a long line of vampire slayers tasked with defeating the forces of evil. But the Slayer’s world looks a lot more like the one outside your window, as this new series brings her into a new era with new challenges, new friends…and a few enemies you might already recognize. The more things change, the more they stay the same, as the Gang – Giles, Willow, Xander, Cordelia and more – faces brand new Big Bads, and a threat lurking beneath the perfectly manicured exterior of Sunnydale High, confirming what every teenager has always known: high school truly is hell.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer premiered on the WB Network on March 10th, 1997. The Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated series, which ran for seven seasons from 1997-2003, stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as “Buffy Summers.” Chosen to battle vampires, demons and other forces of darkness, Buffy is aided by a Watcher who guides and teaches her as she surrounds herself with a circle of friends called the “Scooby Gang.”

“Everyone working on this series is incredibly thrilled by and grateful for the response from retailers and fans to this new beginning for the story of Buffy Summers,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “The faith and support in us is the thing that motivates us to go big or go home on every issue. Believe me when I say you haven’t seen anything yet: the events of issue four alone will have every Scooby talking.”

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #1 SECOND PRINTING VARIANT is available exclusively in comic shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) on February 20, 2019.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including Abbott from Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivelä; Bury The Lede from Gaby Dunn and Claire Roe; Grass Kings from Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins; and Klaus from Grant Morrison and Dan Mora. The imprint also publishes popular licensed properties including Joss Whedon’s Firefly from Greg Pak and Dan McDaid; and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from Marguerite Bennett and Simone Di Meo.

Why the enduring popularity of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is well-deserved

In 1992, the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer had some moderate box office success, but the critics panned it. Joss Whedon, who wrote the script, was incredibly disappointed with the finished product, and said in an interview in The Watcher’s Guide Volume I: “I had written this scary film about an empowered woman, and they turned it into a broad comedy. It was crushing.”

Four years later, Whedon was approached to discuss developing his script for Buffy into a television series, and he jumped at the opportunity. This time around, he got the chance to do things his way, and keep his original intent of writing about “high school as a horror movie.”

Originally titled Slayer, the proposed series eventually went back to its movie title, and the first episode, Welcome to the Hellmouth” debuted on March 10, 1997 as a mid-season replacement for Savannah on the WB network. There it remained for its first five seasons, before moving to UPN for seasons six and seven.

And did I watch every single episode, loyally following the series throughout the entire run, and loving the snappy catch phrases? You bet your fruit punch mouth I did!

Season one began with Buffy and friends as high schoolers, and subsequent seasons saw Buffy attempt (and fail) to be a normal college student, then followed her into young adulthood. Some characters left us along the way (either permanently or on a reappearing basis), but Buffy and her most loyal friends, Willow and Xander, were there until the very end of the series.

Buffy began as a sort of “Monster of the Week” show, but as our characters grew, so did their storylines. What we ended up with was a series that brought us horror, comedy, drama, and often, tragedy. And, the writing was so SMART!

Joss Whedon clearly had a lot of love for his characters, and the writers echoed that love, peppering the dialogue with pop culture references and snappy patter. As examples of the Buffyverse wit, Buffy named her favorite stake “Mr. Pointy”, and Buffy and friends regularly referred to themselves as “The Scooby Gang.”

There were touching moments as well, one of my favorites taking place during Season 3 in The Prom. During the senior prom, Buffy is given the Class Protector award by her fellow classmates, who have mostly shunned and made fun of her. The award is a glittery, decorated umbrella, presented in honor of the class of ’99 having the lowest mortality rate of any graduating class in Sunnydale history.

“And we know at least part of that is because of you. So the senior class offers its thanks, and…gives you, uh, this…It’s from all of us, and it’s got written here, “Buffy Summers. Class Protector.”

Joss Whedon was never afraid to kill off a beloved character, as long as it enhanced the storyline. Along the way, we even lost Buffy twice. Yes, she came back, but her death in The Gift was one of the most powerful moments in the entire series, and even knowing in my heart that she would come back, I cried a few tears. And her epitaph? “She saved the world. A lot.”

Joyce’s death in The Body was one of the top three strongest events during the series’ run in my opinion, and Sarah Michelle Gellar showed us what a great television performance looked like. I remember feeling like I was actually in her skin after she found her mother’s lifeless body on the living room couch.

Alyson Hannigan’s Willow was equally shattered when her girlfriend Tara was shockingly killed in season 6’s Seeing Red. Hannigan, so funny in American Pie, proved that her ability to portray extreme grief and rage was right up there with her comedic chops.

Whedon was also not afraid to think outside the box, and that is where my remaining two favorite episodes come in. These two pieces of brilliant writing and directing are why I consider Joss Whedon to be a genius.

After hearing many critics and viewers continually insist that the main reason for Buffy’s success was the witty, smart and funny dialogue, Whedon wrote season 4’s Hush. Only 17 minutes of the 45 minute episode contain dialogue, the premise being that a sinister group of ghouls known as The Gentlemen have stolen the voices of every Sunnydale resident.

Aside from the novelty of there being no dialogue, Hush is also one of the most genuinely frightening episodes of any television show ever…The Gentlemen are terrifying! The creepy factor is balanced out by the humor of our “Scooby Gang” trying to communicate only through hand gestures, facial expressions, and, in the most amusing section, through Giles’ gory drawings on an overhead projector.

And, then there is Once More, with Feeling, Whedon’s season 6 masterpiece. Since the first season of Buffy, Whedon had wanted to do a musical episode, but it was a daunting task. When the time came, he learned to play piano, and wrote all of the music himself. And it’s good music, people! I love musicals, so it takes a lot to impress me, but these were alternately funny, sweet, sad tunes, each of them ear worms.

The music ran the gambit from a Little Mermaid parody (“Going Through the Motions”) to a hard rock anthem (“Bunnies”), to a tender love song (“I’m Under Your Spell“), sung by Tara to her lesbian girlfriend Willow; their relationship was one of the first long-term same-sex relationships portrayed on a network tv series. The music was released as a soundtrack recording, and I can sing every note of it.

Only two of our main actors were reluctant to sing, ballet-trained Michelle Trachtenburg (Dawn), who asked to dance instead, and Alyson Hannigan (Willow), who was terrified. Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, initially did not want to sing. But when she was told her singing could be dubbed, she claimed to have burst into tears at the thought of Buffy’s emotional turning point being performed by someone other than herself.

Once More, with Feeling received well-deserved critical acclaim, and after the series ended, there were public Rocky Horror Picture Show-style showings, with audience members dressing and interacting as characters while singing along with the music. In 2007, the showings ended after 20th Century Fox pulled the licensing due to a dispute with SAG over unpaid residuals.

Buffy ended after its seventh season, although Whedon went on to continue the series in comic book form. It has remained popular, and was recently added to Facebook Watch. In March of 2017, Entertainment Weekly magazine ran a feature in honor of the show’s 20th anniversary, interviewing and photographing Joss Whedon and the entire cast. I, of course, was over-the-top excited about this, and read the interviews over and over.

Most recently, a Buffy reboot has been announced, which most fans (including yours truly) did not seem very enthused about. In fact, when David Boreanaz (Angel) spoke about it at New York Comic-Con, boos were audibly heard in the audience.

The backlash prompted reboot showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen to announce that “there is only one Buffy”, and that the updated series would include a new slayer, NOT Buffy. That made the whole thing easier to swallow for us hardcore fans, and I may give the reboot a chance after all.

Fellow super-fans, what are your favorite episodes? Will you give the Buffy reboot a shot, or would you rather stab yourself in the eye with Mr. Pointy?

We’ve been huge fans of “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer” for decades.... Our obsession with the musical episode “Once More With Feeling” inadvertently presented a solution to a long standing problem of how to best entry point for us to celebrate the brilliantly singular, yet expansive series. It took a few years to get it perfect, but we couldn’t be prouder with the artwork that Paul Mann put together—including some truly inspired additional design by Chris Bilheimer and Eric Montes, who came up with the idea of the “Slaybill” lyric booklet.

10 Best ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Episodes of All Time

From musical numbers to silent killers, romantic swooning to the most grief-stricken hour of TV ever, it’s the slayer’s greatest hits

    1. The Body (Whedon)
A seemingly typical Buffy episode – specific evil to fight, along with some soap-opera drama among Buffy and the Scoobies – turns unexpectedly heartbreaking in the last few seconds. Three high school classmates of the now-college-age Scoobies are bent on living out a real revenge-of-the-nerds scenario by stealing some magical orbs that impart strength and invulnerability. (The fact that the items in questions are “balls” isn’t a coincidence; the entire episode serves as a brilliant critique of modern masculinity’s dangers.) One of the villains comes to Buffy’s place with a gun; bullets end up killing Tara, who’s inside the house with her girlfriend, Willow. That such toxic dude-ness would ultimately take the life of the series’ beloved lesbian-witch character was both ironic and, in its own horrible way, a perfect commentary on our destructive bro culture. Hers is one of the great deaths of TV history, with the fan uproar to prove it.

    2. Innocence (Whedon)
Buffy loses her virginity to her vampire boyfriend Angel, only to find he’ s a different person the next morning – literally. He’d fallen in love with the slayer because he was cursed with a soul by a family of gypsies seeking vengeance. The catch: Once he finds true happiness, his soul will disappear. It’s not only a metaphor for the worst of teenage sexual experiences, it also sets up several seasons of romantic angst and longing for Angel and Buffy – the perfect depiction of how first real love often feels. This plotline also hints for the first time at how ruthless Buffy would be in seeking emotional truth. There would be no perfect, quick magical fixes for the spell-crossed lovers.

    3. Seeing Red (DeKnight)

    4. The Gift (Whedon)
The hundredth episode of Buffy had to be a big deal, right? Buffy must save the world yet again, but this time the season ended in what appeared to be a definitive, no-turning-back way: She sacrifices herself to save her sister Dawn, and by extension, humanity. The WB called it a “series finale,” and it makes sense as an ending – the point of a slayer, after all, is to die in service to others, and the moment gives Buffy the heroic sendoff imaginable. But real-life TV business dictated that Sunnydale’s best and brightest live again on the rival network UPN, which Buffy‘s studio, 20th Century Fox Television, had recently bought a large stake (as it were). Significantly, Whedon isn’t content to simply use magic to revive his heroine for more fun and games with her friends; her eventual return to the land of the living haunts her through the sixth and seventh seasons, forcing the young woman question the nature and meaning of life. It was a bold gamble that paid off.

    5. Graduation Day 1-2 (Whedon)
A blessedly straightforward season finale full of pure Buffy fun. The double episode has the Scoobies battling to stop the catastrophic ascension of Mayor Wilkins, the sorcerer mayor of Sunnydale. On the way we get an epic fight scene between Buffy and slayer-gone-bad Faith, the politician’s transformation into a giant snake demon (any resemblance to folks currently in power is, of course, completely coincidental) at the class of ’99 graduation ceremony, the death of Buffy’s longtime nemesis Principal Snyder, and, naturally, the destruction of Sunnydale High in a massive explosion. The season literally goes out with a bang.

    6. Once More With Feeling (Whedon)
Yes, other shows have done musical episodes. But few sell them as anything more than a stunt to perk up a show that’s sagging in its later years or to show off a cast’s Broadway-ready talents. That’s not how Buffy rolls. First, Whedon wraps the musical in a “realistic” – at least for the show – premise: A demon has cast a spell over Sunnydale that causes everyone to break out into song and dance, often revealing hidden feelings in the process. While the gang tries to figure out how to disrupt the spell and fight the demon, they, too, drag their secrets into the light. And in a brilliant climactic fight-scene/song-and-dance number, Buffy finally admits that she resents her friends bringing her back from her Season 5-ending death. It’s an epically weird, haunting song and a tremendous showstopping performance by Gellar. Once more, Buffy turns something conceptual into a way of getting inside these characters’ heads. And that’s not even counting the “Bunnies” tune.

    7. Becoming 1-2 (Whedon)
The second-season finale not only brings the entire series thus far to a head – it completely sets the tone for the remaining five seasons. This two-episode send-off tell Angel’s entire history, from 18th-century drunk Irish cad to notoriously sadistic vampire to tortured creature of the night. “Becoming” also forces Buffy to fight her now-soulless boyfriend once and for all, while Willow begins to flex her witchcraft powers. The message: Going forward, the show would not be a simple, monster-of-the-week tale of a slayer balancing school and vampire-fighting. It would weave a TV mythology for the ages.

    8. Hush (Whedon)
When some creepy fairy tale creatures called “the Gentlemen” blow into Sunnydale and steal everyone’ s voices – all the better for cutting people’s hearts out in peace – they also provided catnip for TV critics in the form of a mostly dialogue-less Buffy episode. It’s even more innovative than the beloved musical episode, and as is standard for the series, the silence also serves a purpose: in this case, the slayer and her love interest, undercover U.S. government operative Riley, do better at revealing themselves to each other through action and facial expressions than they ever could through talking.

    9. The Wish (Noxon)
The prevalence of magic in the Buffyverse allows the show to examine its lead character’s powers from multiple angles: One episode turns her into a powerless Southern belle via a magical Halloween costume; another has her temporarily losing her powers, requiring those around her to step up and help. In “The Wish,” Buffy’s enemy-turned-friend Cordelia, reeling from a breakup with fellow Scooby Xander, wishes the slayer had never come to Sunnydale. Lucky for her, she’ s just met a new girl in school, Anya – who would figure in the show more prominently later – and voila! The alternate universe depicted is something of an It’s a Wonderful Life moment for our heroine, with the town overrun by vampires who are completing a “factory” where blood is systematically sucked from humans. (It’s then poured directly into wine glasses for easy on-tap consumption.) Willow and Xander are now vamps and Angel is imprisoned until a much darker version of Buffy rides into town to save the day. Lots of fun scenery-chewing ensues before we’re whisked back to the comparatively sunny “real” version of Sunnydale.

    10. Angel (Greenwalt)
Everyone’s favorite brooding bloodsucker Angel graduates from morose, older-guy crush to potential object of epic romance in one of the show’s key star-crossed-lovers episodes. He’ s a vampire, she’ s a slayer – how ever will they make it work? The chemistry between Gellar and David Boreanaz is scorching, the character are more doomed than Romeo and Juliet, and Buffy puts its first major piece of mythology in place. “Love makes you do the wacky.”

Aside from a direct sequel, another way of telling new stories with new characters within the series mythology would be to produce a time-shifted series not set in the present. This could be a prequel series set in the past, which has the added advantage of maintaining the original set-up more closely than a direct sequel could (due to events in the series finale). Buffy’s mythology allows for plenty of options for a preview series based around a character of color – canonical 1970s Slayer Nikki Wood springs to mind. Alternatively, a new series could be set further in the future, as spin-off comic book series Fray was.

David Boreanaz's 25-ish best “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” Episodes

    --------

That speech was allll Joss. He had it in his head from the start.

I did, however, cry my eyes out while writing the end of Angel and Buffy. Like a baby. Also I think I was playing The Smiths or something equally heart killing. Just to get in the mood.

    Whedon contestó:

Marti, MARTI, how many of my lives did your talented heart save? #JossProtector (I cried for two hours straight writing that speech. Never been happier. And it was the score to SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, maybe just the last track on repeat, the whole time.)

    Y Marti:

Yeh. We did like that. We both cried and wrote. Come to think of it, some things haven't changed much.

Those days! Those incredible days that, when I take a moment, I remember so clearly. ❤️ you then, ❤️ you now across the sea making new heroines, I'm sure.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Guest Stars in 'Big Bang Theory' Series Finale: How This Surprise Happened! (Exclusive)

Steve Holland: I mean, Steve and I are both big Buffy fans -- as are a lot of people in the [writers'] room. And rather than going for whoever is the hot “right now” celeb, it seemed like a really cool, nerd-pull for these characters who have been fans of Buffy forever too. And it was our way to get to meet her before the end. [Laughs]

How did you ask Sarah to guest star in the episode? Did she say yes right away?

SH: Well, Chuck spoke to her, but it’s always a good sign when the first thing people say is, "Our family are huge fans of this show!" That was how it went with Sean Astin too. We reached out and he’s like, "Our family are gigantic fans, we watch every week!" So then it’s like you’re pretty safe and then it was just a matter of working out scheduling [with Sarah.]
