Otto+, gran post, como siempre (y gran libro). Las citas vienen a decir que si, que bueno, que tenía explosiones de ira y puede que a veces gritase e insultase, pero luego tenía también un lado sensible y tierno, como muestra su amor por los animalitos.
Ya en serio, Herrmann era buena persona en el fondo, las explosiones de ira siempre eran relativas a su trabajo (injerencias en su música). Pero luego ayudaba, apoyaba y estaba ahí para tí cuando venían mal dadas.
No es como Leonard Rosenman, que insultaba despreciaba y humillaba personalmente a todo cristo, colegas compositores incluidos.

Se habla mucho de las polémicas y desencuentros sobre Desplat, Zimmer o Horner pero Steiner y Tiomkin llevan muertos muchos años y también divide al personal. Afortunadamente creo de Tiomkin prácticamente se ha editado lo más reseñable que tenía ya fuese en regrabación o procedente de las sesiones originales. Siempre quedará alguna cosa; yo por ejemplo estaría encantado con una regrabación del score corto y bastante contenido para lo que son sus patrones más enfáticos del "Cara de ángel" de mi tocayo Preminger a mayor gloria de Jean Simmons y Robert Mitchum. El resto ha ido desfilando con el tiempo; mención especial para "Horizontes lejanos" y "¡Qué bello es vivir!" de Frank Capra, "Campeón" de Mark Robson, "Crimer perfecto", "Sólo ante el peligro" de Zinnemann, sus films históricos para Hawks, Ray o Anthony Mann y sus westerns más reconocidos. Aunque, ya se sabe, si se es aficionado al picoteo, hay partituras ocultas para films igualmente menos familiares que necesitarían tomar el aire .....
También estamos afortunadamente bien cubiertos con la cuota de Alex North, que incluye también trabajos para directores como Elia Kazan, Martin Ritt, Raoul Walsh, John Ford, Carol Reed o Richard Brooks. Todos ellos maravillosos
El problema de la música de North es que era tan hiper compleja que a ver quien es el guapo que se atreve a regrabar Espartaco completa algún día...

Me encanta lo que hizo en Vampiros. Si acaso, se quedó un pelín corta de presupuesto. Y James Woods lo elogió profusamente. Bueno, hasta Clint Eastwood en "Mystic River" le hace un pequeño homenaje.
Muy cierto, pero no deja de ser impresionante lo renacentista que es este hombre (dirigir, editar, escribir componer...).
Lo que quería decir es que es fácil, como aficionado, dejar de lado a Carpenter porque bueno, son sintes baratos, cutres, todo hecho con dos duros. Y resulta que te pones a escuchar y no es exactamente así. Hay musica muy interesante en su obra.

La de They Live es que la he descubierto recientemente. Ese saxo y esa armónica no me las esperaba. Deliciosa creación.
No obstante, algo de interés habrá cuando hace relativamente poco Varese editó completa y remasterizada la BSO de El Pueblo de los Malditos. Ahí usa campanas, flautas, un órgano (además de los sintes, claro). Está muy bien.

Imagínate que solo se pudiera regrabar una: tiene que ser Spartacus. El North de "La calumnia" o "The Bad Seed" diría que es más accesible dentro de su dificultad que el de sus westerns, sus "southerns" (Long, hot summer) o de tintes históricos. Sus partituras jazzisticas también entrañan dificultad muy aguda. Es uno de los compositores que mejor trabajo ha realizado en base a las raíces musicales mexicanas.

Ésa es la "prueba del algodón" para cualquier aficionado medianamente serio. Uno cosa sí que hay que decir a este respecto: es un trabajo que sólo puedes empezar a arrimarte a él e ir conociéndolo poco a poco para acabar degustándolo. No hay un sentido inverso que lleve del éxtasis incial a la indiferencia o irritación final.
Por cierto Otto+, estoy viendo una entrevista a Alan Howarth, pogramador de sintetizadores y compositor que colaboró con Carpenter a lo largo de diez años, y dice Howarth que Carpenter siempre le decía que tenía que haber al menos un instrumento real o dos en cada uno de los scores. Sea el piano, sea la guitarra, sean las panderetas, sea un flauta, sea lo que sea. Pero tienes que tener cosas reales, orgánicas, porque al combinar eso con la electrónica es cuando salen cosas interesantes.
Y que Carpenter traía los temas preparados de casa. Se sentaba al piano y estaba dandole vueltas hasta que le salían cosas. Como no sabe leer ni escribir música, cuando tenía algo más o menos desarrollado le daba al play en una grabadora que tenía y lo tocaba de nuevo.
